Pros: Cost, Performance up to 200mm

Cons: Lightness (yes, though that might be a plus to many), Performance at 300mm, fiddly and awkward 'macro' switch

Opinion: Tamron's evergreen budget FX telezoom and with the low price in mind, it is not as bad as you might think! Tamron have a long history of being able to produce pretty decent zooms of around this length, or shorter, such as the hugely popular Adaptall 80-210mm f3.8-4. I now have this lens' current sister SP version with VC, which is the best in class but for a few months, I owned this very light Di lens, which I understood even includes some plastic lenses inside. But, being used to a much heavier Nikkor 70-300mm VR (which I dropped and destroyed, hence the lack of a tele zoom) and without any form of stabilisation, this little Tamron is so skittish, it was almost impossible to get steady shots in all but the brightest conditions. One got used to these characteristics of course and I was able to get some very decent shots in London over several days, including a day out at London Zoo. The sunlit architectural shots, especially at shorter focal lengths were very sharp and undistinguishable from other lenses of this type but beyond 200mm or so and in less contrasty light, the performance suffered, though naturally stopping down helped. The close up feature, via the fiddly switch, which will not allow you to follow focus from close up to infinity, ie, tracking a flying away butterfly, as you have to stop, flick the switch and then reframe again - so not good, but consider this as a bonus and not a reason to buy this lens. So, as others have said, a good little budget lens that is good for normal 'snaps' and to start off with. You soon will find its faults and want to upgrade but don't dismiss as a complete waste of time. The competitors seem to be Sigma's cheap effort, but that is more expensive, or Nikon's DX 55-300mm, with VR, which is more expensive, has VR but is DX only but is probably better performing at longer lengths. There's also Nikon's basic 'G' lens at a similar price to this Tamron. I've not used or handled either the Sigma or either of the Nikons mentioned, so cannot speak with authority. 7/10

Although the 7D sensor is not very dense, the "artifacts" created by this lens are several and very evident (often the photos are not recoverable even in post). Marked and very present aberration, very evident distortion and a vignetting that I personally did not like. Obviously, not being stabilized, if you want to go up on the longer focal lengths (mandatory if you want a very close focus) you need to have a tripod. Taking into account the cost it has, I recommend it to those who want to try "macro" photography and those (like me) who want to test a medium-telephoto to understand if it is the desired focal distance. Used very little, I never had problems with electronics or anything else though.

Opinion: I took it used to adapt to my Sony a6000, so a very dense sensor, and I immediately noticed that the autofocus was unusable, so I always used it manually, also finding myself well, since the ring allows you to move the focus very quickly. The con is that sometimes it's hard to find the point, especially since it's not always as smooth; In addition, the barrel rotates, so polarizers are also difficult to use (they would be very useful given the optical defects). Image quality is only good from f/13 upwards. If you don't close enough, the aberrations are very intrusive and difficult to correct, so I would see it well on sensors that are not very dense, which suffer less from diffraction and that allow you to shoot at closed apertures even in non-optimal light conditions. Mine also broke down at some point: all the electronics died overnight. Thankfully it was still under warranty and I was provided with another one that at some point had the same problem. I decided it wasn't worth the €15 shipping fee and took it apart, only to find that a cable inside had been cut. Unfortunately, without a working diaphragm, this lens is unusable. In the end I closed the aperture manually (around f/11...I think), blocking it with XD glue, and this solution gave me the opportunity to use it occasionally.

I don't even consider autofocus, but it has a nice focus ring and on ML you can use it quickly. It suffers a lot from flare but otherwise it's not bad, for what it costs. Unfortunately it happened to me too that at a certain point the transmission of the diaphragm at maximum focal length stopped working and turned into a nice paperweight, because given the value of this lens I would not even know if it is worth sending it to be repaired, probably with what you would spend between repair and shipping you could, if you want, take another copy... Wanting... but I don't think I want to: if I then take another one that ends up like the first?

Opinion: I bought this lens in 2015 just to have my first telephoto lens at the very honest figure of € 110, in the following two years I used it from time to time also managing to get some decent photos despite the qualitative compromises imposed by the price in light of which it would now be unfair to complain about the lack of stabilization, slow autofocus, chromatic aberrations of the plasticy consistency and various and possible. The only thing that I could not digest and that leads me years later to write this review although I would have many other things to review is that just finished the warranty period and after only a few hundred shots one day I start reading on the displays of all my SLR cameras 600d 100d and 6d mk2 the words "err 01 communication problems camera - lens. clean the lens contacts." In essence, the contacts were clean and the diaphragm had stopped working, first only on the focal length that went from about 180/200mm up to 300 and then on the entire extension of the zummata. Given that in a lens already not very bright and that imposes in the absence stabilizer very fast shutter speeds especially on apsc 1.6x I rarely went to close the aperture above 7.1, but currently once I had this problem it works only at full aperture, then starting from f4 to 70mm up to f5.6 on 300mm. In my opinion, this leads to an accentuation of the above, obvious and understandable chromatic aberrations. Searching on the various sites for an economic solution to this problem (so as not to continue to preserve something partially broken but it seems bad to throw away) I note meanwhile, that many specimens of this lens have had the exact same problem, that it is not even convenient to try to send it to someone who can repair it. I also realized that the price on amazon of the latest pieces produced until 2021 have reached the absurd figure of € 249. DON'T BUY IT. Not for that amount, really it would not be convenient even in the luck of finding the specimen to which the diaphragm does not break. Buy more, even Tamron but higher models, even spending a little more or at most buy it used for no more than € 70.
