As far as I'm concerned, any freehand use is not only not recommended but practically "impossible". even it is easier for me to use and shoot handheld with the 400 GM, and with the 200-600, even if the monopod is always highly recommended, in all three cases. We know well that on the web and on this forum there are several Schwarzeneggers who go for days up and down the cliffs of the Alps with 95kg of equipment on their shoulders, 7kg on their arms and skis on their feet in winter or who go to Africa with 17 backpacks, 49 lenses and 25 bodies .... But in Schwarzenegger's reality there is only one ... and only in movies. Apart from this aspect, in practice the only "negative", the 400-800 is really a great super telephoto lens, above all, although not bright, it is a true super telephoto lens !! It's not half rubbish like the Canon 200-800... So much so that if the Canon 200-800 is totally absent in the professional field, the Sony 400-800 has already become widespread. In this case Sony was good because in no time at all it announced it and launched it on the market with immediate availability, contrary to what normally happens today ... with biblical waiting times. It is equally true that Sony fanboys, who have always been the most "technically cool" have not welcomed it very well (like the A9iii), since having always spoken badly of Canon and the tendency to build darker and darker lenses, they too found themselves with a telephoto lens F6.3 - F8.. A childish attitude .. because yes it's dark, but it's an 800mm !! F8 !! and at 800mm it maintains the same excellent optical quality as the 600mm. The optical quality is really very good, up and down in the center is that of the 200-600 but pushed up to 800mm where the value of F8 helps to reproduce really important blurs. At the edges and in the blur itself there has been a noticeable and clearly visible improvement, where the 200-600 appeared "sad" and withered, this 400-800 shows no weakness. The stabilization has also been revised and improved and you can feel it quite clearly right away. The autofocus is now so valid on all products, especially on the original Sony ones, that to say if this or that is a little better would require very specific tests that do not interest me .. As far as I'm concerned, everyone is more than fine. Maybe someone could complain because the sharpness has remained the same as the 200-600 and maybe (maybe!) the 200-600 at 600mm in the center and on "scientific" sights is still a bit better (100% on monitors).. But is there really anyone who would have the courage to complain? Come on... The 200-600 at 600 in the center is hardly distinguishable from a 600gm in terms of sharpness and the 400-800 is attached to the 200-600, moreover it reaches 800mm without showing drops and with a brightness of F8! But what are we talking about... Once again Sony proves (with OMSystem) the best choice for those who want to devote themselves to naturalistics, offering a boundless range of telephoto lenses for all tastes and all budgets, also thanks to the fundamental contribution of Sigma and Tamron ... Non-Arcaswiss tripod foot, more solid than the detachable one of the 200-600 but not easily removable (it takes 4 Allen screws to remove it). f/8, is not f/6.3 at 600mm (7.1 at 590). The click (as well as on the 200-600 and 300GM) of the collar positions is missing. Some like it, others don't. Sigma did well with the 300-600 f/4 to make it selectable. A bag like the one of the 200-600 is missing.... ;-(
