Its 561gr, in the m43, make it look heavy, as well as its 117x78mm size, also in the m43, make it look bulky. But on the Em1mkii it is proportionate and balanced. Considering the metal construction, the 24-200mm excursion, the tropicalization and the internal stabilization, it is not only unique and irreplaceable in the system but practically unique in the photographic world (with those characteristics, measurements and weight). Of course, on micro bodies Em10 xx or Em5 xx is perhaps less balanced and does not take advantage of its double stabilization, but you can't have everything. Now let's come to the fantastic merits, starting with the sharpness. It is fantastic on all hikes and across the frame. It is superimposable or better than the various fixed 1.8 of the system, and this alone on a 24-200mm zoom is amazing. You will say, of course, it's an f4 though. And here comes the fun. Its stabilization, added to that of the camera (always Em1mkii) allowed me to take perfectly sharp photos at 3..5..7 seconds of exposure handheld!!! ... often leaving the tripod at home and not having to resort to fixed 1.8. I now come to the construction, which can be resolved with a single word: impeccable. Its use is that of an all-rounder to be left on the machine at all times. In fact, you can do landscaping, portraits, small birdlife, travel, etc. Alternative? Of course there is something at Olympus: the 14-150 (which I owned), lighter and smaller, but with a decidedly lower performance outside the frame center, without double stabilization and darker; the 12-200, which, however, in the face of a greater excursion, weighs / bulks in a similar way, has a lower yield on the frame and is darker. In short, I think that the 12-100 is an irreplaceable gem of the system for those who prefer not to change optics often and/or do not practice a specific genre that requires an equally specific optics (avifauna, macro etc ...).

The 12-100 is a phenomenal lens, you place it on an EM1 III or on an OM1 or on an OM5, you leave and travel the world, without needing anything else... At most, you put an 8mm/9mm in your pocket. You do it all, with fantastic results, and in all light and weather conditions. It doesn't have the blur of an f0.95 on FF ???? ... I'll survive anyway :) I just need to position myself in a "strategic" way, but more than anything else in an intelligent way, or, if I have the chance, put the subject where I want, and the problem is solved... Apart from this, in all normal situations, it still manages to "enhance" the subject by highlighting it with respect to the background. Of course, I don't care about isolating a subject from reality and totally alienating him from the context, just to look good on Instagram, or having half a pupil in focus of a cat on a bed that looks like a monster... but I prefer to enhance the context while at the same time highlighting the main subject, and an F4 quality lens with F8 equivalent depth of field, such as the 12-100, allows me to do just that. The sharpness is very high at all focal lengths, already at full aperture, and reaches its peak at F5.6 ... it's the same sharpness as the 12-40 2.8 and the 40-150 2.8.... The autofocus is very fast and precise, and contrary to what many chatterers write, on an OM1 or a G9ii or even a G9 first series, it is also able to catch the eye of a stationary subject and keep it in focus if it moves while walking. If, on the other hand, he starts running like crazy, he probably loses it and hangs it up again. but if it is a still child or a model posing up to that point, it comes to us from .... ; ) The micro 4/3 doesn't have the best autofocus on the market, but it still manages to do something better than a Canon sx20 from 85' or a Sony rx from 1750 BC ; )

Opinion: I was looking for a lens for when I need to travel light but without too many sacrifices. Having a Canon FF system I naturally thought of the RF24-240. Tried, I was not satisfied. Evaluated the technical characteristics and also thanks to the cashback, I bought an OM-5 equipping it with this objective. As a neophyte of the OM brand, immediately the surprise of the overall lightness: the whole weighs little more than just RF24-105L F4 ... Although the lens appears voluminous compared to the camera body, the handling is good even if in fact we are slightly unbalanced forward, but thanks to the good grip of the zoom ring you hold it and support it well. The second surprise came from the quality of the images: I downloaded them a bit biased since the M4/3 format is clearly disadvantaged compared to the FF not only for the smaller surface but because notoriously building high-resolution lenses on small formats is much more challenging than in the FF. Instead, the results have always been between good and excellent at any focal length. No problem in the center, the edges even at 12 mm and TA are more than acceptable, there is a slight distortion but it is easily eliminated. Switching to 24 and 50mm (48 and 100 equivalents for the FF) the already good overall quality improves even more and in my empirical tests the comparison with the Canon RF24-105L F4 is at the last pixel. Stretching in the 50-100 range does not feel significant drops in quality. The bokeh is always good, uniform and creamy, I particularly like it towards the major focal length where I think it gives the best. Vignetting always manageable or negligible, CA only hints visible at maximum magnification but still correctable. I was surprised by the good resistance to the backlight, it holds up well both when the sun is in the frame and that it enters by reflection, as from a body of water. The hood is slender, minimal, but the lock is safe both in the operational and inverted position. The stabilization resulting from the machine-objective assembly is very effective, I estimate at least on the four real stops. The construction of the lens is well cared for, excellent finishes, conveys a sense of solidity. The zoom ring is fluid, has only a very slight hardening towards the lower focal length, while the focus ring has a decisive activation shot and uniform rotation. In general I did not detect any mechanical backlash. In short, it is a great thing to go from 24 to 200 mm (equivalent) in a poor turn with the guarantee of good optical quality. The abbreviation PRO is well justified.
