I could stop here, since they are great professionals who do services for 5/6 figures and immeasurably more beautiful photos than mine, but we are in a forum of amateurs, where everyone is free to express their opinions and therefore I would like to say mine too: ) I have used the Z9 alongside my R1 in quite demanding contexts, trying to find any differences (keep in mind that the Z9 is a project with already 4-5 years on its shoulders) was a short but intense test, and even if I am a simple amateur photographer I still have enough experience to quickly understand what I find in my hands and realize how it goes. Until today I had only tried the Z8 on several occasions, and each time my feeling had always been the same: an excellent camera, with which, however, a good feeling has never been triggered, a little too "nervous" a little too "difficult" and an AFC with a first attachment often dancing on fast-moving subjects, and a viewfinder that is too saturated and contrasted... Several Nikonist friends tell me that Z8 and Z9 are identical... maybe, indeed certainly, they will be right... But my experience was quite different... With the Z9 a good feeling was triggered from the first moment... the ergonomics are fantastic, better than that of my R1 ... the grip is definitely more comfortable and firm, and the arrangement of the keys is perfect, it is almost unsettling how each key falls in the right place under your fingers, you can do everything with one hand while framing through the viewfinder, unlike the R1. Even the viewfinder seemed more pleasant (a little more natural) than that of the Z8. On paper the viewfinder of the R1 (the best ever) is larger, but in the field I did not realize it, the only thing I did not appreciate is the lack of a larger and more protective standard eyepiece. As for the autofocus, unlike the Z8, I didn't have those hesitations on the first lock... Using R1 and Z9 "simultaneously" on fast subjects that suddenly enter the frame from a hidden angle (without warning), I could not notice differences between the two cameras (Z9 set with small area, without recognition and with priority to shooting,... R1 with indifferent mode). In essence I could not find any noteworthy differences between Z9 and R1, except that the grip of the Z9 is certainly more ergonomic while that of the R1, although good, is a little too "chubby". And now we come to the quality of the files, a topic dear to amateurs (but then can we still really talk about quality after the 500 passes of Sharpen and Denoise and alterations of the blur that afflict 99% of the photos ? ) Here I feel I have to make some distinctions. Speaking of JPEG (which for me has a fundamental importance) for me the JPEG of the R1 (and of R5ii and R3) is generally more beautiful especially in terms of colors, the transitions between yellow, orange, red and blue blues I find more realistic and pleasant and also the hold at medium-high ISO for me is much better. When the light is beautiful, the JPEG is still excellent and the colors are very belli.@ As far as RAW is concerned, Nikon's 64 ISO make the difference, you can bring out a little deeper colors and probably a slightly more extended dynamic range... the situation returns to parity from 100 to 200 ISO, and then takes a marked turn in favor of the R1 from 400 ISO upwards. In conclusion, in my opinion with a small general refreshment, and a little more power, a Z9 II could seriously give the R1 a run for its money... If he then had 24mpx ... ; )

Opinion: Without going into the myriad of possible customizations in which it is easy to get lost, I will limit myself to describing the first impressions on the essential aspects found compared to reflex cameras such as the D850 and D4s that I have used so far. Autofocus is certainly a plus point for speed and subject recognition except in poor light conditions where reflex cameras lock more easily. Another point to the advantage is the impressive burst which is certainly useful for those who take sports photos. Other aspects that are not essential, but which are a good support if you use manual focus lenses, are the focus peaking in the viewfinder, which helps a lot compared to the reference of the green dot of the reflex cameras and the stabilization in the sensor that makes even the optics that are not stabilized, finally the Starry Sky mode makes the scene visible even in the dark. As against the battery life, as the resources required to power the viewfinder, display etc are certainly higher than those needed for a reflex and therefore it follows a very reduced autonomy compared to the latter. Even the charger is not up to that of the reflex flagships, cheaper with a remarkable duration for recharging and with a single charging slot when for the shorter life of the battery it would have been even more logical to have 2. Another detail that could have been more cared for in my opinion is the memory flap, not easy to open as in reflex flagships and the memory slots which, being spring-loaded, I think are much more fragile than the previous ejection system with the button. Finally, the viewfinder: pleasant even for those who come from reflex cameras, it allows you to see the final result of the photo and if you want you can do without reading the exposure meter but it has the "defect" (even if this can be a subjective aspect) of making the medium used appear a bit artificial and lose that charm that reflex cameras have, with which it was possible, among other things, to "look" with the camera off to get an idea of the composition. Ditto for the simulation of the shot, a ridiculous imitation of the shutter CLICK and that in conditions of particular noise you can't even hear (even if in opposite situations it is useful to be able to silence it completely). For these reasons I think that those who love photography and also technology should have both ML and Reflex and use them according to the needs deriving from the genre and the way of photographing at the moment. As for the video aspect I do not express myself, because as far as I am concerned, if there was a camera like the old D3X or 1DSMKIII, without video compartment, I would certainly prefer it.

The camera body of the Z9, finally, is not embarrassing like the Z6 or the z8 or the various Sony models and so on but coming from d5 I am used to a certain ergonomics, which only d4, d5, d6 or Canon 1dx mark2/3 can give me. The terribly dense and noisy file of the z9 does not correspond to my way of photographing at all. After all, throwing 45 million Megapixels into that 24x36 does nothing but reduce the size of the photoreceptors, and the game is soon done, noise, noise, noise already starting from 3200iso. In short, light years away from the purity and beauty of a file produced by a Reflex flagship mentioned above. That viewfinder creates further disturbance which, obviously in my opinion, is misleading and definitely far from the good old mirror. The batteries, despite the high amperages, do not last long, a natural consequence of the energy required by the camera body following the absence of the mirror. However, the video section, for those who love filming, is objectively excellent and the autofocus above the rosiest personal expectations. In conclusion, I pass and I will not buy it despite having handled it quite a bit. Photography, for those who have understood it, does not require continuous replacement of equipment, sometimes the idea, the light, or as the good Thoreau said in his time "It doesn't matter what you are looking at, but what you can see".

A little after its release we read everything and more, due to the breakage of a filler neck (but really only one) that has so worried (who knows why?) the owners of other brands. I have owned this camera for more than a year and it had made me temporarily stop using Z6II (just replaced with Z8 as a second body) so much satisfaction I am using it. I practice a lot of wandering naturalistic and I carry the camera/lens kit hanging from a shoulder strap using the QD system. It tolerates bobbing, shaking, rubbing in the vegetation and I can place it on the ground without much hesitation. It has caught rain, humidity and even a little snow, it has even gotten dirty with mud sometimes. I used it in frost, in strong winds and under the scorching sun... My Z9 is still perfect, not even a small mark. I can reassure you that Z9 is rugged enough for any kind of use. It has fabulous ergonomics and handles very well, it seems lighter than what it actually weighs. Now that I have also taken Z8 I will be able to rest it a little more. I was waiting, in fact, for the release of Z8, because Z9 seemed excessive in everything, but a dear friend who would not use it for a period of time lent it to me for a week. But the week didn't end before I phoned my supplier to cancel the reservation in question of the outgoing Z8 and order a brand new Z9. I am satisfied, indeed, particularly satisfied. If she had the pre-shoot in RAW I would give her 10 with honors.
