Pros: lens, dexterity, manual focus, dng file, solid and excellent materials, metric scale on the barrel, saving settings to the PC,
Cons: non-tropicalized, lack double slot, EVF magnification, power key, video key, joystick, no metric scale in EVF, no user profile names, cost.
Opinion: I have owned it for several years now, amazing lens, camera body with badly thought design choices! For a simple use, point and click, the machine has been designed in a sensible way, in fact it presents everything you need for street photography, travel, reportage or the time ring, the diaphragm ring, the manual focus ring. Yet despite this simplicity of use, which Leica is famous for as making it a lifestyle, there are a few things that make it cumbersome. So I report the things that I did not like: 1) The joystick in addition to being tiny and flat, if designed for photography alone is inconvenient, as it allows you to move the focus point with the various arrows, but if you want to reposition in the center it does not work, in its place if you click in the center of the joystick the video starts. So to bring the AF back to the center you have to double tap on the LCD. 2) EVF really resolute, now I do not want anything under 3mpx, but despite this, the refresh is slow especially in low light conditions or with slow times, because the machine reproduces the preview when you click halfway through the shutter (this thing can not be deactivated). In addition, the magnification of the EVF in my opinion is not the best, throwing in the eye you have the feeling of being inside a box, you can see the inner walls of the viewfinder. 3) power button, really ugly and uncomfortable, having the two modes Af-S and C makes the ignition annoying, in fact on the leica Q2 it has been eliminated, but even here they did not put the classic screw button of the leica M that could be useful for the mechanical remote shooting or for a soft release button 4) REC button on the upper shell, really useless for those who do not make videos, also absurd that you can not program at will, on the leica Q2 has been solved by adding the pressure on the compensation ring and then set at will the chosen option as the WB. 5) user profiles, these are really convenient and I use them as I created the four presets for the various shooting scenarios, but I find it absurd that if I click on the rear FN button it does not show me the name I assigned to the profiles themselves, so you have to go to memory. 6) absence of tropicalization, with what it cost at the time, absurd that they did not immediately think of making it suitable to withstand the weather, especially being fixed optics, in this case to solve the problem I used electrician tape in critical points (between body and lens where there is the macro switch, so I do not macro, so I do not macro, tape on the case back and microphone holes) and to date despite having been everywhere the sensor is clean. 7) flicker and banding in the presence of artificial lights and in certain shooting conditions, it occurs both in preview and in rare cases also in photos. 8) poor general grip in addition to the fact that on the back back there is no skin, so first I solved with the thumbs up, then removed and replaced with the front grip. 9) buffer not really fast especially if you make multiple shots, it also happened to me in an episode to have 2 corrupt raw files, changed the SD. 10) White balance, the machine in "WB-automatic" shows colors always faithful to reality, on this leica is a guarantee, what I did not like is the absence of the WB Shift or the ability to customize the individual color channels to give a different look if necessary. Having made this realistic review in my opinion the cost of the machine mainly justifies the lens, the quality of the materials and the simplicity of the whole system as well as the choice of raw DNG files that I share (same thing does Ricoh and Sigma) I find them much more comfortable and versatile than any other brand. Moreover, if you can live with the limits described above I would say that it is to be preferred over the Leica Q2. |
