Opinion: After years of using pretty much all the EF 70-200 f/2.8 versions (except the stabilized Mark III), I've been working with the new RF 70-200 f/2.8 IS for a couple of weeks now. I have already put it to the test in rhythmic gymnastics events and competitions, so I can give some concrete impressions. I start with what I was aware I had to accept: the non-compatibility with extenders. The only real limitation I found in use, however, is the zoom travel, a bit long. You get used to it, but it remains less immediate than the previous EFs. For the rest, the merits are truly remarkable, and many concern historical defects of the SLR versions: • Weight: the gain is enormous during a working day. The difference, at the end of the event, is very much felt. • Tripod/monopod collar: on the EF, the presence of the pins marked the ring and, over time, the rotations became less and less fluid, until the obligatory passage in assistance. Here, however, the rotation is not very fast but remains fluid, especially without pins that over time can loosen and ruin the mechanism. Autofocus chapter: very fast and very precise. I had no hesitation, even in less than ideal conditions. The minimum focusing distance of 0.70 m is also very appreciable, really useful for creative close-ups or to tighten up on details in competition. Sharpness: excellent but not exaggerated, well balanced. Bokeh: very good. Personally, I continue to prefer the "smooth" EF 70-200 f/2.8 one, which to my taste returns a slightly more three-dimensional image. But it's a question of character, not quality. For rhythmic gymnastics I deactivate the stabilizer (to avoid micro-delays in focusing on fast subjects), while in events I use it and I appreciated its great effectiveness.

Opinion: Saying something different than what has already been said about this lens is difficult if not impossible, especially when the opinions on the results obtained are totally and positively agreed so, as a former user of the EF II version (to tell the truth, over the years, I changed 3 EF II before finding the sharp one at 2.8) I will limit myself to summarizing the differences I have noticed, in addition of course to the weight (which is why "I had to" switch to the RF version, shooting mainly sports and no longer having the physique of many years ago, I came home in pain...). So, in the order of how they come to mind, I first list the advantages I have found: - reduced weight and size; - excellent sharpness at f/2.8, far superior to my best EF (which was finally sharp...) - lightning-fast autofocus speed, the EF was already fast, but that's more! - more effective and silent stabilization; - more "faithful" colors; - significant reduction in the minimum distance of MAF. Of course - in my opinion - it is not perfect so I don't like: - the incompatibility with a Teleconverter, but I think I understand the reason: duplicate, given the performance, it would have been an obstacle to the sales of supertele...; - the external zoom, we will see if and how much dust it will "suck up", but having to reduce the size the choice was obligatory; - the longer zoom rotation travel than the EF which - at least to me - does not allow you to switch with a single movement at the bottom of the stroke; - the blur is not that of the EF, even if in the end I don't mind, maybe more than in the "cons" I should write it in the "pros"... - the lack of a semi-rigid housing (to be clear, like the one of the EF): with what it costs, this "sacrifice" they could do it... - the cost, but this is the sore point of all RF L lenses, luckily I "financed" his purchase with the sale of the 2 70-200 in my possession (2.8 II and 4 II) and the excellent and heavy Sigma 50-100 1.8 Art from which I was really sorry to part, but he was a boulder too and photographing had become a sacrifice ... indeed, in the end I even had a couple of hundred euros left that don't hurt. In conclusion: if I were to buy a 70-200 f/2.8 for R, I would have no doubts about getting this lens, it costs, but it is worth them all!

Opinion: I have never had the opportunity to try the previous 70-200 EF 2.8 and so I can not make a comparison with them but I can say that this new lens is a jewel and allows you to replace a whole series of fixed in an excellent way: 85mm f1.8 or the new rf 85mm f2 + 100mm f2 + 135 L f2 + 200mm L f2.8. It has a very low weight for a 2.8 and a portability from "closed" that easily fits in any photographic backpack; Only the hood is in my opinion a bit bulky and could be replaced with that of the 50mm F1.2 which is always 77mm. The sharpness is excellent already at 2.8 and in particular at 200mm the blur is from fixed optics of the highest level. The stabilizer then does the rest and makes it usable even in low light conditions, the AF is lightning fast. If you do not have higher brightness needs (eg 85mm f1.2 or 135mm f1.8 or 200mm f2) it is the lens for you.

Unfortunately, the figures speak for themselves and all considerations on the quality of this object should be re-evaluated in the light of its cost and excessive devaluation !!! A lens that gave me again the smile and the pleasure of taking beautiful photos. The quality of Canon's L-series was a step beyond standard EFs and is now probably two steps ahead of basic RFs. Wonderful colors, optical quality, shutter speed thanks to infallible autofocus. It weighs a lot, nullifying the weight advantage of an ML compared to a SLR. It costs too much, like all RF mount lenses; let's hope at least they don't also have the big devaluation that the EF L-series had on the second-hand market.
