Pros: sharpness, speed, detail, f: 2.8, lightness

Cons: only serves to cameras with aps-c sensor, could be firmer in the front segment (fluctuates a bit when in 55mm)

Purchased at a bargain price of about € 200 so the review is based on this price and not on that of about 300/400 at which it is found today. it's the successor to the 18-55 kit I had on the 2000D. I certainly appreciate the "all-rounder" focal range and the excellent aperture at 2.8 which, for me, is always extra-sharp. I like the colors a lot and require very little pp (see on my profile some shots ;)) Solid construction even if slightly heavy for the type of lens even if I like to "feel" the weight of the lens. The focal ring is "slow", i.e. it tends to go down with gravity due to the weight. The IS was excellent and allowed me to shoot without micro-blur even at 1/40. Too bad for compatibility only on APS-C. I would have gladly brought it in the future to FF but peace, it will be resold. The lens hood that is supplied is extremely bulky so much so that I avoid using it. I will look for an alternative. As I anticipated, for the price paid it is a best-buy and I do not regret it. For the 300/400 he is at now I would probably have had some more doubts.

Opinion: Very pleasant all-rounder lens to use, with good sharpness and a good, albeit not perfect, detail even at full aperture (at least as far as I'm concerned). The fixed aperture at f/2.8 on all focal lengths is certainly its workhorse, making it fast and very bright (ideal for those who have APS-C and cannot afford to go up to very high ISO in darker scenes). I consider it robust and of excellent construction (not comparable to the L series, but certainly not even the price). Tropicalization is not essential for the use I make of it. The price of a good used car is very valid and competitive in my opinion; there are hardly any other lenses capable of performing so well in that price range. I found a vignette, I can't say whether to describe it as strong and marked or as sweet and light; despite this, it is pleasant to the eye and, if necessary, it can be easily corrected with a few steps in any post-production program. I think the weight is slightly "excessive" for the focal length range it covers (logical that, if you have to keep a fixed f/2.8, somewhere it must also weigh down). Accomplice of the weight is certainly also the stabilizer, useful when you have to go down a lot with the shutter speeds in dark situations. The weight balance, however, is not perfect: when you lengthen the lens you perceive an imbalance on the front (even quite aggressive), but nothing that cannot be controlled. I don't know if it's just my sample, but when you move around with this lens in your hand it always tends to go to 55mm. It's quiet and I've never heard any strange noises (I've read/heard someone complain about noises when focusing or moving the focal ring). Too bad for the compatibility only with APS-C, I would have gladly brought this lens even on a hypothetical full-frame.

Cons: No FF, construction, no flare resistance, in my case poor sharpness

Opinion: In general it is a very good lens that, of course, cannot be compared to the various 18-35 or 18-135. Plastic construction but sturdy and pleasant, even if not tropicalized, and unfortunately yes it melts very soon, opening downwards with nothing. It is clear that its strong point is the fixed 2.8 at all focal lengths, which also gives a discreet blur, soft and enveloping. To upgrade is undoubtedly a great investment, but you shouldn't expect the sharpness and definition of the more emblazoned, and expensive, L-series. At least the specimen I have, doesn't define the details, at any aperture, least of all at TA. If you're forced to shoot and have to let in some sunshine, the flare will kill you. Also, being only for APSC I found it a bit limiting. In any case, at the price you find today, it is a good compromise and an excellent investment for your photographic growth, especially since it is a widely used focal length range.

Opinion: Excellent all-rounder zoom lens, of excellent optical quality. Sharp at all focal points, and almost at all openings, although it perhaps besto sings around f 4 or f 5.6. Stabilization is also excellent, allowing you to recover two or three stops. It looks like a real "L" lens, but without the officially indicated L. Too bad for the lack of tropicalization (but they should have really called it "L" by force!). Highly recommended for Canon's APS-C SLRs, perhaps the best EF-S lens and zoom in general for this type of cameras. Highly recommended.
