Pros: Robust / good picture quality / weather sealed / fun to use

Cons: heavy / cromatic aberration

Opinion: A pro lens which will not let You down. I like it especially for portraits. Detail and color rendition is very good in my opinion. Night shots are great with this lens. Also i had used this lens in heavy rain, and it never failed. Yes, it is large and heavy. So sometimes i leave it at home because of that. Cromatic aberration is slightly visible in specific light set ups. But i would say it is at an acceptable range. Autofocus is fast and smooth. This is a lens that You will keep for Your entire life! I recommend it.

Closed at F8/11 it becomes perfect and sharp from edge to edge, without having an exaggerated contrast, you have to deal with a bit of curvature of the field, so you have to know how to focus on the edges. It holds the flare, 77 filters, very human size, very fast AF and beautiful almost Macro mode. Of course it is built very well, at 24 it is elongated and at 70 retracted, this allows you to have a hood that works at any focal length (the usual canon pro with velvet). "In my opinion" the reason lies precisely in the blessed paraluce, rightly praised by Paul. In the indented position (canvas) you enjoy a FULLY efficient lampshon; in an extruded position (wide angle) it correctly offers itself for a few millimeters, so as not to vignette. The standard scheme, which theoretically would have allowed better results in terms of resolution, instead obliges a lampshed calculated not to vignette at 24 mm., but thus, in the tele position, there is virtually no protection from the rays of light accidents. With a more "traditional" construction (EF 24-70/2.8 L Mk. II, for example) therefore, it would probably have been possible to obtain MTF (theoretical!!!) a little better BUT, "in the field", having a TRUE AND FUNCTIONAL lampshon would still have led to better images (no less negatively affected by flares). My opinion is that Canon's mathematicians reasoned in these terms! Then, with the Mk. II, to better conform to the wishes of the "ox park" (always insatiable in requesting the "the more there is, the better" -of resolution, in this case-!) they changed course, according to the wishes of the mktg..
