Pros: Very sharp lens with great color and contrast, better than many L lenses. Very good bokeh, very low aberrations. 1:1 macro, internal focusing, front elements (as in most EOS lenses) do no rotate, does not change length during focusing.

Cons: Not fast focusing, won't become a sports lens for anyone. The optional lens collar is horrible; an L-bracket is a better option.

Opinion: Best bang-for-the-buck macro available for Canon (i.e the very best value for a macro lens, in case translations don't say it well). Also great for portraits (if f/2.8 is shallow enough for you) and landscapes. The IS model costs twice as much for no extra benefit aside from the IS. If you work from a tripod, this is a great lens to have.

For me who love shooting at f/2.8 to make naturalistic macros a little outside the classic canons is a bit of an important limit. However, on most occasions I was still very satisfied with it for the years I used it. Well balanced, good focus, to be a macro, on Eos 7D. Regarding the use in natural environments, I have some doubts about the build quality. I had to send the lens for assistance due to problems with the focus motor after a few years of use, which was replaced at rather high costs compared to the current price of the lens, especially if used. Talking to other owners of the same lens some similar problem popped up. I would therefore recommend it for those who want to start doing macros or make occasional and not burdensome use of it. Otherwise, in case of repairs, you risk adding additional costs that bring the overall outlay very close to that necessary for the purchase of a used in excellent condition of the L version.

Pros: Sharpness, RR 1:1; the AF is relatively fast overall, but at the same time it is fast enough to be a macro, in any case it is very precise and it is at any operating distance. The blurry is good, the construction is robust, it is relatively light and also very handy, moreover it turns out to be very resistant to atmospheric agents despite not being tropicalized.

Cons: Practically no one because its only limit, namely the fact that it is not stabilized, is known a priori.

Opinion: Goal of the highest quality. The sharpness is already exemplary at Full Opening and improves, a little, between f 4 and f 5.6 where it reaches its peak quality. In field use it is extremely practical and handy, I have always used it freehand, even to the most demanding RRs, and frankly I have never felt, except in very rare cases, the lack of the stabilizer; it also shows good backlight hold. His blurry, honestly a little hard, is not very pleasant in "artistic" macrophotography... pass me the term, but on the other hand it is very suitable for scientific photography by virtue of the strong impression of sharpness that it gives in the details out of focus. In the end, I find this a very successful lens and not at all outclassed by its stabilized heir.
