sent on December 15, 2023 Pros: Ruggedness, portability, file quality, B&W are wonderful, fast shooting Cons: Autofocus, battery, non-adjustable screen, slowness in displaying shots and the dust issue that for a "pocket" camera is quite complex Opinion: A compact camera that made me rediscover, after many attempts, my passion for photography. You can take it anywhere and respond immediately. After a while you notice some small flaws, but I would buy it again a thousand times. With about 300€ you can add the adapter and the 75mm (wonderful lens), which unbalances the camera a bit, but allows you even more versatility. It's not an expert review and I apologize for that, but it's thanks to this forum and this section that I found the right machine for me and somehow I wanted to return the favor by sharing my experience. |
sent on December 03, 2023 Pros: File Quality, Ease of Use, Materials, Portability, Lightweight Cons: I would say nothing, because what is missing you know before you buy it Opinion: A small miracle. A camera that looks like a toy and churns out images that you can't believe. All in 11cm by 6 and a total weight of 260 grams. I too waited a long time before buying it, thinking about it and thinking about it, obviously for the lack of the viewfinder but also a bit for the high price, but then I wanted to try it and I was really very impressed by this small concentrate of quality. Starting from the construction and materials, to move on to ease of use, to professional-quality images (I'm talking especially about DNG using only those) up to the extreme portability linked to its size and lightness (it is smaller than a smartphone). Needless to say, he's always with me, and that, on a daily basis, really makes a difference. I no longer go out on purpose just to take pictures, with my luggage studied rationally (and above all weighed) but with the Ricoh always in my pocket I capture what happens to me even casually, especially without being observed in various contexts. I've had several compact cameras over the years, but this one is of a really higher level in everything. The GR IIIx is equipped with a 26.1mm fixed camera of remarkable quality, which corresponds to a 40mm in the FF format. For me, perfection. Aspects that I like less: certainly the lack of an electronic viewfinder that can be added and a menu that in my opinion is too "rich", coming from Leica. Noise above ISO 3200 is audible but I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. So far I haven't encountered the dust problem because of the "retractable" lens. Perfection obviously doesn't exist, but having the ability to shoot quietly all day with a camera of this level and even forget that you have it on you is priceless. In this Ricoh-Pentax has been brilliant, currently there are no rivals lurking. Worth all the money spent, absolutely. Rated 10 |
sent on October 09, 2023 Pros: File quality, obviously compactness, simple menu Cons: No optional viewfinder, autofocus can be improved, cost of original batteries Opinion: Together with the Sigma Dp2 quattro (Foveon sensor) it is the machine that in daily use has surprised me the most for the quality of the file, really incredible if compared to the size. The dng is crisp, the colors are very nice, the light reading is excellent. For a long time I gave up the purchase due to the absence of the viewfinder, which I still consider very important, especially for the user experience. Maybe Ricoh could have provided an optional one (I mean an evf viewfinder, there is an optical one), which in some situations and for certain people (for example, those who use glasses only to see closely) could be very useful. Then there's the matter of dust, which can certainly cause anxiety, and the really poor battery life. All negative aspects, which Ricoh could improve on future rooms. However – a bit like with the Foveon which only works well at low ISO - this is the price to pay for having so much quality in your pocket. The files of the GR IIIx are mind-blowing and even at high ISO (max 5000), despite the visible grain, very pleasant. The Positive Film Simulation is remarkable, and even if you shoot in dng, open Lightroom, you can apply it to the raw file. Perfectible but recommended, especially if used under 1000 euros. |
sent on August 13, 2023 Pros: Excellent lens, excellent file quality even at high ISO, pocketable, versatility Cons: Continuous autofocus just enough, constant anxiety about dust on the sensor Opinion: Used with great satisfaction when traveling and for some city outings. Used in different genres: prevalent street but also landscape, architecture without forgetting the macro function. The restrictions imposed combined with the size of the camera have changed the way I photograph. PROS: The quality of the lens and the files have been widely cited. It is not afraid of high ISO even up to 6400 (in several cases). Fits into the back pocket of your jeans. Good stabilization. Mostly I used it set in the usual way with zone focus, i.e. on Snap Focus, aperture at 8, speed at 320 and automatic ISO. Very interesting is the combination of snap focus with the possibility of focusing in single AF by touching the screen, which is particularly responsive and therefore effective. I got a lot of satisfaction. CONS Continuous autofocus is just enough, it's not his job (but I come from Sony and Canon). I won't dwell on the price and the duration of the batteries, you know what you buy. If anything, as far as I'm concerned, I've had a constant anxiety about the possible entry of dust inside the body mitigated by the metal lens cap that has done a great job so far. I sold it, regretted it, and bought it back |
sent on August 11, 2023 Pros: The joy of photography Cons: Dust, autofocus, fixed screen Opinion: This Ricoh GRIIIx is the joy of photography. It is the pleasure of always having with you a real camera, incredibly performing, very light, perfect for the street, but also for excellent portraits. Defects: 1) If the next model retained all the features of this, but with the added possibility of being able to open it to clean the sensor from dust, it would be the definitive machine; 2) The autofocus is sometimes not very intelligent, but just set the shot with the pressure of your finger on the screen and you get the desired focus; 3) The screen in certain light conditions is completely unusable, but the quality of the camera is so high that, if you have the correct settings, you can shoot blindly. False problems: 1) the battery: it is not true that it does not last long, personally I get tired long before I make (excellent) photos of how close she is to exhaustion |
sent on June 24, 2023 Pros: Intelligent, sober and essential. Pocket! Not only x Street Photography. It mounts the 40mm (not interchangeable), an all-rounder that fits me perfectly (the 28mm of its sister, the GR III, is wide for me). For this jewel I immediately bought a small hard-shell case and I put it away right away. So, 10 months after purchase, I can't find a speck of dust even on the camera body. The case is called "Baxxtar PURE BLACK size L" and I got it on Amazon. It is lightly padded inside, it is equipped with a shoulder strap (removable) and a loop to put it on the belt. Internally it measures 115 x 70 x 40 mm, weighs 100g and (at the moment) costs €16.90. Cons: Opinion: |
sent on June 14, 2023 Pros: Pocket-sized, featherweight, stabilized, ease of use, incredible image quality even with the addition of the Tele conversion GT-2 and 75 mm focal length, unique in its kind. It is addictive. Cons: Limited battery but with three behind it is easily solved Opinion: After more than a year and a half always with me, from small trips to long journeys alongside the GRIII I do not feel the need for anything else. And with the addition of the GT-2 lens that brings the focal length to 75 mm covers the focal lengths of my interest. Accustomed to the viewfinder of the Canon FF (sold) I had no problem getting used to shooting from the screen, on the other hand this has been happening for some time with the Iphone. I confirm the very positive opinions already expressed about the GRIII purchased two years earlier, but I admit that I am still discovering its potential and secrets to get the best. No dust problems so far and in Mexico it has been used in rather dusty places. Beautiful files, crisp and contrasted image quality, it is a joy to admire the results in such a small space. You shoot so much because it goes unnoticed so as to allow you to steal scenes in a moment in snap focus mode. Thank you Pentax for this wonderful toy. |
sent on April 12, 2023 Pros: Image quality, weight and dimensions, touch ae/af/shot Cons: battery, autofocus Opinion: I bought this car just before a short family vacation. At first glance it seemed well built and less delicate than I thought. I found the menus quite clear, I use them in English but also in Italian I have not seen terrible things. Weight and dimensions are optional. In the first shots, I noticed uncertainties with the AFS, even with good light and decent contrasts. So I started by using snap focus often. Then, I activated the touch on the screen for AE/AF + Shooting (all with a single tap) and I found myself much better. In this case, if the camera does not focus, it still shoots with the snap focus settings. I put it in manual, so as to choose time and aperture, and I left the automatic ISO. I didn't miss a beat. All the photos came out as I expected and with a pleasant surprise: even at high ISO this sensor works really well. I have souvenir photos of dinners at ISO 6400 perfectly usable on the screens of our devices. In good light photos the result is excellent. I wouldn't really be able to distinguish a shot taken with this camera from one taken with my FF if I couldn't see the shooting data. I liked the 40mm focal length equivalent. Given the results, this little lens must be a Mr. Glass. With the functions I activated and the type of use I made of them, without too many reservations, I had to use two batteries to make 200/250 shots. I set the brightness of the display as the first function of the quick menu to overcome the problem of readability in strong light. Things improve, of course, but the battery goes down on sight. In some cases, I had to snap a little on trust. Net of everything, I think it is the best compact ever had and I would buy it again without hesitation. |
sent on August 24, 2022 Pros: Size, sharpness, speed. Cons: Nothing Opinion: I was waiting for the glory of Ricoh to come out with this focal length as similar as possible to the human eye. The 2.8 diaphragm makes it very versatile even in low light conditions. I find it extremely sharp, I would say crispy. An APS-C soul in a compact body, what else can you ask for? Some raise the defect of the battery that has little life. It's true but with a power bank it recharges very quickly, taking a little break. I find myself always using this one to the detriment of other machines, this is the indicator of its practicality. The macro function is beautiful, it churns out beautiful photos. Pleasant colors. The video part obviously under tone but I do not use it even with Sony. I'm curious to print some recent shots to understand how much it is really worth but already on the 27" screen it gives a good idea of the excellent purchase. |
sent on August 17, 2022 Pros: File quality, fantastic lens, compactness, pocketability, operating speed, hyperfocal shooting, it is used with one hand. Cons: None for the concept... or maybe the collapsible target? Opinion: The perfect machine for the street, in my opinion superior to Fuji x100 series in all, if you do not need a viewfinder (which can be purchased separately, like the flash). The car is pocket-sized and lightweight, smaller than a smartphone, for street reportage it goes unnoticed and no one gives it importance given its size, but she is a bomb always ready to take the "stolen" photo. Af not very fast but precise, Optics of great quality and bright, good seal at high Iso. Ergonomics is the top, comfortable keys even for those with large hands, three function rings available, designed to be used with only one hand. The lens is collapsible when the camera is off, this gives it an advantage in terms of portability, as it can be slipped into the pocket of the jeans, but in my opinion this construction can let dust enter the lens, it is the only precaution to which we must refer. For the rest together Top. |
sent on July 11, 2022 Pros: Almost everything Cons: the limits imposed by its essential nature Opinion: A small giant, it is hard to believe that such a small machine can churn out such beautiful files. It is pocket-sized, has a good yield at high iso, professional quality lens and sensor, in short, the perfect machine for street photography to go unnoticed and have high quality photos. The only sore point, at least for me, is the difficulty of framing with the display in situations of strong brightness. Someone complains about battery life, but it's like taking the panda and complaining that it has no trunk, the GRIIIx is certainly not a machine for long photo sessions. |
sent on July 11, 2022 Pros: Construction, image quality, optical quality, color rendering, maximum quality in black and white conversions, portability and immediacy of use. Cons: Nobody Opinion: I state that I have always had a weakness for all the GR, I did not have the series I then the series II. And I've always found them exceptional. With the IIIx they have finally placed a focal length (40 mm equivalent) that makes it absolutely versatile. The GR those who know it know that it is a unique machine, there is nothing similar on the market, and obviously it must be used and appreciated for what it can offer. In my opinion it is the perfect photo camera... that? Because it is pocket-sized, immediate and of the highest quality. It fits in our pockets, like a mobile phone and often having such a camera always at hand allows us to capture every interesting moment we see (a bit like what happens with smartphones). As for the technical / constructive side, well, magnesium body with very rational controls and menus, you can perceive that it was designed by those who take photographs. On the chromatic part and BN conversions, hats off, as always Ricoh is placed at top levels. On BN conversions I personally haven't found anything that comes close yet. In my opinion a car absolutely to have. |
sent on March 31, 2022 Pros: Impeccable construction, lens, responsiveness, very light, touch display, sensor stabilization, quality of the files and workability of the same, invisible therefore perfect for the street. Cons: Autonomy Opinion: Taken a few days ago, but immediately it was love. Unlike other cameras, it is the only one that has conquered me for weight and maneuverability. The construction is perfect, robust, the display can be seen very well and allows any operation in a precise and fast way. I love files, always sharp and contrasted and I really appreciate its "invisibility" in situations where it is appropriate to see without being seen. Great camera |
sent on November 06, 2021 Pros: All Cons: Nobody Opinion: I've had and have, several cameras, and this Ricoh does exactly what it needs to do. Its limit is our imagination. If you find any flaws in this machine, you probably got the product wrong. If you want more autonomy, viewfinder, tiltable display etc., there are other machines suitable for you. She wants to stay compact, discreet, fast, lightweight and portable like a smartphone but with a crazy photo quality. You always carry it with you giving you the opportunity to immortalize with quality, sometimes unrepeatable scenes even in those releases where photography is not your goal. She absolutely does not care about the autonomy of the SLR, it is not made to take 1000 photos in a day. If, like me, you take a few shots a day, with a charge you also do 10 days. Congratulations to Pentax for this beautiful magic ... |

sent on October 18, 2021 Pros: Ultra-high image quality, 40mm equivalent focal length, stabilized APS-C sensor, compactness, ease of use, excellent autofocus, touch screen, snap focus Cons: Price, battery life, lack of optical viewfinder, built-in flash and charger Opinion: I wanted a compact to always carry with me, and avoid the weights of the FF kit without sacrificing IQ. I already have a great Fuji X100T 16 Mpx, but it is too big to be considered "pocketable". The choice hung between the GRIII, the Sony RX100VA and the Panasonic LX100II. After some tests with the Panasonic and the tiny (and 'dangerously' slippery) Sony, in the end I opted for the GR, despite the fixed focal length that makes it less versatile. Fortunately, the choice was made when this GRIIIx came out, with a focal length of 40mm instead of 28mm, with the possibility of crop to 50mm and 71mm. The image quality is from APS-C of professional level in the body of a compact and, after the necessary tests and comparisons to monitors, certainly higher than that of the other two contenders, especially Panasonic. I don't make videos and shoot only in RAW, and I must say that the files are very clean and very well workable. The cons are known before and they are easily obvied... except for the price. A charger and a small flash for 999 euros of list price could also put them in the box (as in the LX100 which costs 150 euros less)! In any case, I vote... 9.9! |
