sent on November 16, 2021 Pros: Beautiful rendering of colors, perspective, blurred, three-dimensionality. Light. Cons: I can't find any. Opinion: I bought this used lens because I needed a telephoto lens paying very little. A real bargain. Light and with surprising quality, I use it a lot to take sports photographs (horseback riding) where it is really exceptional for the rendering of colors (the ground, the hair of the animals, the clothes of the conductors). It is bright and the focal length is well suited for indoor and fieldside use. Sometimes I add a focal length duplicator, but for my needs 180 mm is enough. Also good for portraits. The contrast is there but it seems to me not too violent. |

sent on November 14, 2021 Pros: Colors, sharpness at all apertures, blurred, construction, precise autofocus, absent aberrations, creates magic. Cons: A bit of purple fringing on the spot reflections, unprotected diaphragm bayonet side. Opinion: I use it on d750, I have an immaculate specimen and I bought it more to test the fame of what is considered one of the best nikon lenses ever than out of necessity. Optimized to be used at full aperture, it maintains the same performance at all apertures and at all distances, at least on 24mpx. Someone says that closing gains a hair but my specimen has a crazy detail already at 2.8 and despite numerous tests I have never found the slightest difference closing. Even the online tests diverge in this regard so maybe it's a matter of specimens and I was lucky? Dunno. The colors are beautiful, natural and alive with zero chromatic deviations, warm but never yellow, aberrations totally absent (just a little purple fringing on reflections in extreme conditions). As a comparison I have two nikon 85mm 1.4 D and G and a sigma art 35mm 1.4. It has a color rendering that is halfway between the two 85, much better rendered at TA, it is also more constant in performance and definitely easier to use with good results (but this is also intrinsic in different focal lengths and apertures) difficult to really miss a shot. Quality of the blur really at the highest levels in all its phases. Making a complete comparison is clearly difficult because of the very different focal lengths but I assure you that it does not fear comparisons. Obviously feels the weight of the years the anti-reflective treatment, combined with a comfortable but small hood and therefore not very effective. The autofocus is of a total precision and consistency. The focus ring has a remarkable feeling like the old manual focus and significantly better than the 85mm 1.4 D. Technicalities aside, it is the definitive telephoto lens and simply a perfect lens that creates magic in any situation, from portraits to landscapes, very easy to use and that makes you fall in love from the first shot. I bless the day I decided to take it, if I think of all my kit the only lens that I will never give away is this. Let's be clear the focal length has a fairly limited use (hence the little market and the low price in the used), if you shoot for work a 70-200 will guarantee you the versatility necessary to take home the loaf but if you take for passion I assure you that you will find every excuse to use it. |
sent on June 04, 2020 Pros: Detail, colors, content weight Cons: No one in particular Opinion: Amazing optics: warm colors typical of the D series, depth, natural rendering. The detail especially from f5.6 is very defined but without the exaggerations typical of the most modern optics (see G series). Shadows and clear-cut passages that give the shot an atmosphere never trivial. Good brightness that allows you to shoot even freehand. An optics that don't betray. Must have. |
sent on March 07, 2020 Pros: yield, sharpness, blurry, robust construction Cons: autofocus in power Opinion: I tried for fun this "old" lens, belonging to my brother, on a sony a7r2 with adapter. It's a great lens that maintains excellent sharpness from the whole opening, but without that hardness typical of the most recent lenses. In the portrait, even in the foreground, the skin defects remain all, but they are not emphasized by an exaggerated contrast as in modern lenses (those who appreciate it can always add it in the post). In addition, the color rendering, "transparency" and general contrast are excellent, as are the blurred, very creamy and pleasant. It's good for infinity, too. To some extent its yield resembles another af-d in my possession, the 85 f/1.8, against which it has a better yield and a decidedly pro construction. In short, a professional lens that, when used for portraiture, still allows you to get beautiful images right away, without long and complicated post sessions. In general use and in the landscape remains a fabulous goal. |
sent on February 17, 2020 Pros: General optical yield, bokeh, metal body, velvety lampshade internally and incorporated. Cons: AF noisy and uncertain even in light conditions (on D7500), chromatic aberrations with open diaphragms. Opinion: Excellent optics. Light, versatile and with superior optical qualities. A must have for stolen and discreet shots. Great for portraits with a pasty bokeh with beautiful flooring. The AF is objectively years old. Suggested at the prices of the current used. If you are looking for optical quality better than the previous non-AF version, if you are looking for the speed of the AF, better the latest versions (not so cheap). |
sent on December 06, 2019 Pros: Size and weight content, image quality (good to ta sharpness, a razor from f4; rich color shades, gradual tonal passages, three-dimensionality, pleasant and soft blurring, even in the foreground), price, construction. Cons: Fringing, loses af on non-motorized bodies. Opinion: Probably the best fixed I've got. The AF tried it by taking pictures of dogs in agility and I can not complain in paired with the D850. For what I paid him is a best buy. More modern optics of focal peers and opening weigh twice as much, are made of plastic, have no integrated lampshade, cost 3-5 times as much. Ok, they have the vr and the af that also works on ml. If you need these features, you have to sacrifice yourself. The only thing I would have liked would have been the compatibility with the Nikon tcs. I have to see if with other brands it works. |
sent on November 14, 2019 Pros: I really appreciate the blurring, the detachment of the planes, the rendering of colors, the sharpness, the compactness, the lightness. Cons: In hands-free use, rapid exposure times should be set to ensure sharpness of the image. Opinion: Preferring fixed optics I have always wanted this lens. Great blurring, moving out of planes, color rendering and sharpness. Paired with the D700 it is well balanced and certainly lighter than the 70-200 zoom. I have owned it for a few days and the first shots leave me really satisfied. It has a distinctive stamp of its own that I like. I use the focal 50mm and 85mm and quite the 35mm focal. This 180mm and bright focal lens now manages to complete my needs (portrait and landscapes). I also recommend this to owners of FF Nikon cameras in view of the availability on the market of used models in excellent condition at affordable prices. |
user111807 ![]() ![]() | sent on June 29, 2019 Pros: All Cons: Nothing Opinion: What about this lens that is worth all the money it costs even from new, not to mention then to the ridiculous prices that is used in good condition , I use it always I have always made the mistake of giving it away to use the most versatile zoom 80/200 2.8 after three months I have always bought back what was for sale in the store where I had put it in sale account. Built as now, the latest generation Nikkor, robust, compact and lightweight. Of course the latest realizations are sharper and contrasted but in my opinion they do not have the magic stamp that has this lens. AF slow and lack of vr who cares. For convenience I use a zoom 70/200 2.8 but when I have little space and I have to stay light has no rivals, just last Sunday in an excursion to the national park of the forests of the Casentine in mtb I made about 300 photos alternating with the zoom 70 /200 f4 vril that had mont ato on his car a fellow hiker and I passed to him the 180, well when at the end of the day we shared them (about 550 photos) with our fellow hikers (a dozen) almost all recognized those made with 180 regardless of who had used it on D810 my partner with D500 saying that he liked it more without knowing why. Usually I leave it mounted fixed on a D700 to make portraits for me is the top. I also confirm all the other qualities already said by others. |
sent on June 28, 2019 Pros: Weight, old style quality Cons: A bit of Ac that are easily eliminated in post, lack of stabilizer (for those, like me, did not have a very solid hand) Opinion: There's not much to say, it's the lens that gives me more satisfaction than I have. I was given taken used and is in excellent condition. The value for money is staggering, as they are found to be excellent for 300 euros. It is sharp already at 2.8 and closing just a little gives fantastic images for contrast, colors and blurred beautiful and not at all invasive. In problematic light condies the autofocus suffers a minimum, it is true, but nothing dramatic. On the D750 it is balanced and forms a must-have pairing for nikonists. Vote 9.8 because perfection doesn't exist. |
sent on February 08, 2019 Pros: Weight, size, construction, colors and blurred, bright Cons: Af slow, lens hood closed flush front lense Opinion: It ' a lens that immediately strikes already to see it... one of the few 180/200 luminous with a small size, made with good materials and very compact; From the first blurry shots nice and pleasant and good resolve, not very contrasted, also bright (does not seem to lose in real T-stop); If we want the only flaws are the AF a bit slow, the lens hood that closed goes on the front edge, lateral AC. |
sent on November 01, 2018 Pros: High quality lens, awesome Blur Cons: Now I can say I don't have it Opinion: Tried one morning for the closeups and I immediately fell in love with it. Not as slow as it seems, also used for sports photos for basketball Brescia. We also talk about a lens with more than 20 years behind it. Immediately purchased at a modest price. Really advised the purchase for those who want a fixed quality of excellsa. |
sent on October 30, 2018 Pros: Sharpness, lightness, cost Cons: Slow autofocus Opinion: Excellent alternative to Pesan 70-200 2.8 and similar. Great for portraits as blurry very nice... I had difficulty with moving photos and sports because the autofocus is not "behind us." I'll return excellent files on the Nikon D800. For the remainder recommended optics also saw the modest cost in the used. Hello, Gio |
sent on October 29, 2018 Pros: Compact crisp bright light and well done Cons: Not having it Opinion: Gorgeous optics, my first serious lens, fantastic for portraits, good even for sports photos, matched with powerful motorized bodies (D3-D3S) is fast enough in AFS. Uprooso Bokeh. It is located on the market at derisory prices for the overall quality and materials with which this beautiful optics has been built, buy it if you happen to find one in good condition, you will not regret |
sent on September 10, 2017 Pros: Construction, lightness, optical quality. Cons: Side AC Opinion: Wanting an alternative to the heavy 70 - 200 F 2.8 VRII, I used it very well, the optics I've used will be over 20 years and paid only 300 euros. The optic still has the tag with the inscription " Passed "of the quality control that the houses once did on some optics of the lot, and today they no longer do: that old trabiccolo there is a selected optic and in fact it is beautiful sharp even at full openness, and in my opinion gives it to 70 - 200 to 180 mm at full aperture.rnrn F 5.6 to go for a better hair than 70 - 200 F 2.8 VR II (which is perfectly calibrated) closed at F 5.6 and is better than another 180 F 2.8 I've tried. The AF is NOT slow, though mys makes a nice casino when it focuses. RnrnIt has a transient AC, very pronounced, but I get it handy in photo retouch. RnrnE 'an old look like a pattern and glasses, and you see well, but if one finds the good copy, it is optically valid, & egrAve; light and tiny, and ...... it costs nothing! |
sent on August 09, 2017 Pros: sharpness and weight .. well constructed you can not lose the hood. Cons: honestly I could only say AF in very fast and not all situations. Opinion: this objective is fantastic .. I could conclude with this sentence .. I do not understand who says it has no clarity ... but I do not understand it! It is beautiful to shoot with this goal that weighs nothing compared to so many other 1 or 2 kg To be a 180mm is light as well as not to be made of plastic! The hood that many complain to me does not change anything I have avoided losing it .. I used it on d300 and now on d500 satisfied on all occasions! I have photographed animals .. I have not seen any purple edges while I photographed a moving sling on the branches of a backlit tree but in the shot there were not all these problems .. so do not make it a problem .. with the follow-up of the d500 on some occasions it tired to focus but only in situations with fast subjects .. and not always..cmq a great goal! the straconsiglio at all! |
sent on July 18, 2017 Pros: Sharpness to TA, absurd bokeh, color rendering, weight and clutter Cons: Purple fringing, VR would allow something more. Opinion: An optic that I have long waited for and received in gift. On FF I had to calibrate af at +17. Overcame this and a fringing pink correctable in post without any problem a gorgeous optics. Awkward clarity (as opposed to what DXO stands for). Under 1/400 it risks microchips. The most absurd bokeh I've ever been able to touch with loads of colors and extremely creamy. Ideal for portrait and photo photography, all-metal and lightweight compact glass. A lens that is over 30 years old but also conceived for fan counters. Inevitable in the backpack.rn |
sent on June 02, 2017 Pros: Sharpness, peSo, bokeh, colors, constructive quality Cons: The Hail is not the best Opinion: Truly a fantastic look, it has a creamy blur and a cache of crazy plans! Super recommended, I use it on d800e and d750, the photos that are returned are simply delicious! It's very clear already at 2.8 but by f 4 it's a razor, it has bokeh up to 22, an amazing thing! sent on March 19, 2017 Pros: sharpness, tonal stamp Cons: AF, purple fringing Opinion: 3Bultimo behind the focheggiata area), defect which is common at the best goals of this class. The tonal timbre is bright and airy, with a lightness that goes in the direction of the one revealed on some Leica lenses. The autofocus is slightly below average compared with Nikkor does not have an internal motor, which is certainly not a good thing. However, being able to do a dialogue with the best autofocus modules of the most recent digital its functionality does not preclude any opportunity that is not the maddeningly sport. I conclude by pointing out the renowned strength and practicality of the extraction hood. |
sent on March 16, 2017 Pros: Sharpness already at 2.8, construction and overall quality Cons: Nothing for what it is Opinion: magnificent goal, I use it on DX which theoretically should make less, but in my opinion its photo quality is excellent, clear already at the maximum aperture and f4 becomes a rasoio.rnSui portraits has an incredible detachment as few and a mellow and soft bouchet .rnUn bit of chromatic aberration to 2.8 but nothing shocking, if you get the chance it vivamente.rnL'AF advice is not as slow as other D for me, and the use that I do is great and accurate. |

sent on June 21, 2016 Pros: Compactness and ergonomics. adequate and well-balanced weight (mounted on camera). sent on January 20, 2016 Pros: Construction "nikon once" sharpness to TA, good focus, good results for portraits Cons: sincerely considering the cost MMT do not see many in the autofocus "lazy" Obviously it is an objective specialist from portrait does not arise for other uses, and as such should be evaluated Opinion: I nicknamed the 70-200 of the poor, with about 300 € used will bring home a portrait lens that has to envy to 70-200 only the versatility and speed of the autofocus (both aspects are unattractive for a use purely portraiture) but if the play as best as sharpness and color rendition and weight. Definitely a lens that buy back |
sent on December 10, 2015 Pros: Sharpness crazy already in TA, tonal passages superlatives, bokeh creamy, flawless construction, retractable hood intergrated very convenient, the price of used. Opinion: 21 !! |
sent on November 22, 2015 Pros: materials, Assembly, cost, light weight, built-in hood Cons: not excellent sharpness, chromatic aberration, slow AF, F/B focus on almost all specimens, unprotected rear aperture Opinion: This opinion I could copy it from that already expressed for 105 and 135 DC and synthesize so: noble materials assembled with care in the land of the rising sun, excellent with the analog but suffers from a rather old design — to take advantage of modern Digital it takes more. Has a great bokeh, ok, but only because resolution and sharpness are not exciting. Attention then don't leave it a minute without the rear CAP, the jap they forgot to give it a neutral protection immediately below the lens bayonet, basically the lens is opened until the diaphragm, if it turns a speck of dust you are sure that you will enter in the goal. The fine calibration in AF machine here is required, each piece has a story to itself. In my opinion this perspective makes sense in context vintage with a Df or D700, or with a low dosage of mpxl. Unfortunately this lens will not update (cannot build a contender for the 200 mm f 2) therefore is and remains the only fixed focal quality on that to use on our nikon. ATTENTION: this writer is not an influencer or a guru, and not one that downloads images of others from the network to impipparsi in relation to unlikely. They are simply for almost forty years a nikonista fan of photography and photographic material and my opinion is not Gospel, but merely the result of empirical experience. Objects that I write I buy them really, I play it a few months and if I don't sell them, but question always of material currently in my possession. I'm not a copy paste of reviews taken here and there on the net, if I speak of an object is only because I had it in the House as long as necessary (at least months) to try and figure it out. I often go against the tide but this didn't detract from sleep, as much as possible, I try to help young aspiring photographers that give weight to their savings. sent on February 02, 2015 Pros: Perceived quality of the mechanical, optical quality, built-in hood Cons: Autofocus slow and noisy, chromatic aberration backlit. Opinion: When you take the 180mm from its stylish case you seem to have an object of another era in his hands, in fact gives the idea of ??being so robust that it can be used as a hammer and continue to function perfectly. But the most important thing is that you have an "almost" 200mm with a maximum aperture of f / 2.8, at a price unimaginable, and frankly many of modernity that would not raise the price if they miss. Goal by color rendering excellent, detailed and precise with a pleasing bokeh, is limited by the lack of noise that limits its use, for example, to the theater, forcing the photographer to fiddle around a bit 'too much to use it in the manual, and in 'aberration in the field of purple backlighting in very contrasted, however attenuated defect in post shot. |
