sent on June 13, 2023 Pros: Weight, autofocus, very sharp, excellent stabilization Cons: Brightness but the R system forgives a little Opinion: Given that I use it only a couple of days, it replaced with great satisfaction the excellent ef 100/400 that used with 1.4 X III on my R7 did not excite me, while the use with the R6 was excellent. Perhaps in terms of image quality there are no big differences with its little brother EF, but tracking, stability and maf speed are definitely worth the switch. Unfortunately for back problems I had to retire the excellent EF 500 F4 II, fortunately the R system forgives a bit 'the high iso so the transition to this lens will be less traumatic |
sent on April 02, 2023 Pros: Autofocus, weight, sharpness, stabilization Cons: Brightness, limit of use with multipliers, zoom a little hard Opinion: I was very hesitant about buying this lens, the brightness was the thing that bored me the most, but after the field test I realized that everything in the context can also be there. Let's start with the pros of this lens, the atufocus is lightning fast and the hook on the subject is of the highest level, the weight less after hours is felt mounted on R3 (compared with its peer on 1DX SLR), the stabilization is very good and silent, the sharpness of this lens is shocking the details are truly spectacular. The cons, the brightness is the most painful note because at F7.1 at 500 mm or at F6.3 at 400 mm if there is no light it is difficult not to shoot with the ISO, good is that as soon as light arrives everything returns to normal. The zoom I found a bit hard but that's okay, if you forget to block the lens does not stretch by itself. The use with multipliers is not the top, beyond that further loses brightness and here there is little to do but under 300 mm you can not mount it so the lens remains open, I personally prefer to use the electronic crop of the R3 that multiplies to 1x6 and does not lose brightness. That said, the lens is of excellent workmanship with good tropicalization and despite the price (I recommend pushing on the discount in the store that can be remarkable) I would say that it deserves a nice 9. sent on March 06, 2023 Pros: AF Speed - Construction with Innovative Material - Sharpness - Stabilization and Weight Cons: Maybe the window with the focusing distance. Opinion: What about this perspective is so much stuff ... a nice all-rounder... okay for nature photos.... It's also good in indoor arenas .... Taken with the winter Blackfridey and initially "I think like many" to spend € 3000 that perhaps with the old optics the 300mm 2.8 I did the same things? The first tests were not so exciting ... then setting well the controls of the machine R6 .... Trying trying many settings .... In the end I found the right configuration for what I do... also setting the ring C1.. C2... C3 of the R6. My answer to my initial question is Yes is it worth it... I wanted to make myself a new RF kit with this 100-500 the 70-200 f2.8 and if it will also come out the 300mm always f2.8 .... But having already had these latest EF lenses and thoroughly testing the 100-500mm I don't find it a sense to take them again. |
sent on January 02, 2023 Pros: Weight, size, autofocus, sharpness and stabilization Cons: By inserting the multiplier the zoom can not go back all inside. Opinion: Everything has already been said is excellent. For me the 7.1 aperture is not a con because it makes it small and handy making it great for travel. The addition of the multiplier increases its size which makes me take a larger backpack for carrying. Certainly the overall performance is better than the EF 100-400 II version that I have used for years. |
sent on September 02, 2022 Pros: Focus speed, AF accuracy, lightness and portability Cons: Brightness, little incisive clutch, white paint less resistant than predecessors, price Opinion: After many doubts and research I decided in May to buy this lens by giving in exchange the canon 100-400 series II. with RCE it was quite simple, the adjustment on my part in the end was 1500 euros. I had to buy it from scratch I don't think I would have been able to buy it. if I can be completely honest, I don't think the improvement was worth the expense. I want to say that it is an excellent lens, well built, certainly improved compared to the predecessor. For all this is not worth 1500 euros of difference (my personal opinion). I photograph a bit of everything, nature, animals, portraits, architectural details. All obviously made very well in combination with the R5, but I think that the color rendering, and the brightness of the 100-400 was better for my way of photographing. if we talk about speed, you will come this is faster, but we are talking about fractions of a second. the substantial difference is that this lens was able to follow a bird of prey in flight with greater accuracy than 100-400. a few more frames in focus and 100mm more. 1500 euros? I don't know. Probably not. it is clear that it is easy to talk like this once you have it in support and then its service does it. but if I went back I would no longer be so convinced. then he did not like very much the plastic rendering of the construction, siuramente lighter, but more delicate. in fact I do not pay much attention in the woods or on inaccessible terrain, if I have to put the car on the ground I do not have many problems, let's say that the white paint already has small black spots (this with the previous lens happened after so much time and many more abuses). here in my opinion this is not acceptable for such a product. In addition, the clutch is soft, so if I block the lens, while walking in the mountains it tends to stretch the same. that must not happen either. and I consider it a blasphemy to have to ask to send 3000 euros of lens back to have it fine-tuned in the store. these things must be checked before being sold. I do not want to upset anyone, the lens is beautiful and is in my opinion the top that you can find on the market. I only say that if you have a 100-400 series II L with which you are comfortable, perhaps it is not the case to rush to replace it as I did. |
sent on July 29, 2022 Pros: In order of importance: autofocus, sharpness, stabilization, weight and bulk, excellent compatibility with RF 1.4X Cons: In order of importance: cost, maximum aperture at f/7.1, control ring positioning, hood a little to improve (filter window that always opens) Opinion: I have been using it quite intensively since February 2022, also associated with RF 1.4X, mainly for nature photography, but I am also appreciating it for landscape and portraits, especially dynamic and sporty. I confirm all the excellent qualities already described, including the enormous versatility. I would say that the positive optical aspects are such that already from the display of my R5 you can appreciate differences in contrast, saturation and pleasantness in general compared to other optics. If I shoot with short focal lengths, it is possible to recognize from the display the photos taken with the 100-500 compared to others made with close focal lengths, but with other lenses also L series (eg the old EF 24-70 f / 4 at 70 mm), precisely for this visual pleasure. Not that at 500 mm is not even, I simply do not have lenses with which to compare yields! The autofocus best marries the algorithms of the Eos r5, in my case, practically not failing to focus on stationary or "normal" moving subjects, and guaranteeing excellent yields with subjects in flight, take-off or fast moving in general. The stabilization is really great, I repeatedly took perfect photos at 1/20 or 1/15 freehand, simply with a support point. It performs very well, even if a minimum of quality loss is felt by displaying at 100%, with the dedicated 1.4x RF multiplier, with which the autofocus does not show any performance degradation. Very convenient to carry even for hours and uphill, perhaps the "stem" of the collar could have been a little shorter, so as not to sprout too much from bags or backpacks not very deep. Other minor defects are the positioning of the control ring, too far from the zoom and focus rings to be promptly at hand (in fact, I prefer the controls in the car), and the hood window to adjust the filters that, at least to me, often remains always open. The biggest limit (not defect) is obviously the brightness, especially in combination with the RF 1.4x. Even in open spaces, in such circumstances, the ISOs rise a lot in the hours with the most beautiful light (2-3 hours at the turn of sunrise and sunset), to guarantee times of at least 1/500. In short, every now and then you will continue to miss a nice supertele f / 2.8 or f / 4. Finally, I resize a little the validity of its use as a macro, taking advantage of the short focusing distance. I tried, but having the possibility of using a real macro, getting closer to the subject, it is definitely another thing, mainly for the rendering of the blurred. |
sent on July 29, 2022 Pros: Dimensions, weight, lightning fast af, L series, 77mm filters, Fully removable collar. Cons: Practically nothing. There is no real swich for locking the zoom extension. The price for such an optics is not excessive. Opinion: Comparison with the L 100-400 II series is almost a must. I believe that many owners of the 100-400 II used on SLR systems have almost compulsorily switched to this optics. Yes, of course the 100-400 II with adapter works very well on ML, but this optics is from another planet. Comparing it with the 100-400 II it is lighter, more compact and offers 100mm more travel, (darker than 2 stops? No problem with ML this difference is not even noticeable) I could also compare it with the sigma 150-600c Although 100mm less the size, weight and speed of the af make this 100-500 an absolute piece of 90. The aperture of f/7.1 is not a problem at all. It's super sharp. I've been using it on R, R6 and for a few days R7. On all three machines the AF is very responsive and lightning fast, even with repeated and abrupt changes of framing always keeps the subject in focus. The price ? It is not excessive if you think that the 100-400 costs 2700 euros, (and need an adapter to use it on R systems), certainly 3000 euros are not few but the optics are worth all this money, both for constraint and for yield. |
sent on July 17, 2022 Pros: lightweight, ultra-sharp, ultra-fast and precise AF, stabilization, great with externder Cons: excessive price, not very bright Opinion: I thought my 100-400 II was the ultimate for a zoom in terms of sharpness. I also had the Sony 200-600 on A7R III (one of the most beautiful sensors ever) because the many comments and authoritative opinions had almost convinced me that it was the non plus ultra of telephoto zooms. And instead, going against the current, I decided to invest in the Canon 100-500. This zoom is lightweight (compared to the 100-400 II and 200-600 Sony), very portable and truly versatile. Photographing often only on the road was what I was looking for. The Sony 200-600 is gigantic and although it has an excellent price quality ratio it is really difficult to consider it practical or compact. The 100-500 doesn't struggle to carry in your backpack and is ideal for my Lowepro Photo Sport Pro 30L AW. ................... Sharpness: from the center to the edges, even at full aperture, it is clearly sharper than both the 100-400 II (especially at the edges, but also at the center) and the Sony 200-600. ................... All my goals I test them with the same method to have repeatable situations every time, so I know what I say and often other professionals or Juza himself during his tests confirms my evaluations. I close by emphasizing that the stabilization is first in class and the tropicalization and care with which this lens is built is of a very very high level. ................... P.S. The tripod ring is easily detachable. Much better than the hybrid solution adopted with the 100-400 II |
sent on May 25, 2022 Pros: lightweight, lightning fast af, first-in-class sharpness even at full aperture Cons: price, really excessive Opinion: arrived recently, I thought that in terms of sharpness the already excellent 100-400 is II EF was difficult to overcome (not in an absolute sense, but in its category) but here we are in another category, the lens is a blade already at full aperture and closing the aperture is practically useless, it makes the sensor of the R5 shine. the focus is very fast and very precise, practically a sniper. the lens is relatively small and light, very handy even freehand, the white hood does not make me crazy between the negative sides certainly there is the brightness (although up to almost 400 mm is cmq f / 5.6 like the EF brother) and above all the price .. should be taken taking advantage of some offer or cashback, because 3000 and broken euros are really too many cmq promoted with flying colors |
sent on March 14, 2022 Pros: Fast, precise and silent AF. Very effective stabilization. Really engraved. Incredibly lightweight. Cons: If it were a little brighter it would be great. Engagement with the extender possible only with the lens in extension. Opinion: So, those who come from the excellent EF 100-400 LIS II have enormous expectations and at the beginning are a bit biased, in the sense of considering it difficult to do better than the aforementioned optics. Well the 100-500 is superior in everything compared to the predecessor: sharpness, micro-contrast, AF, stabilization, blurred, minimum focusing distance, less weight and so on and so forth: the more you put. Only in two respects, apart from the cost, it remains a little behind its brother: the brightness (although there is to consider that this reaches 500 mm and does not stop at 400) and the use with duplicators. I will try to explain this aspect better: to mount the duplicator, the lens must be opened to 300 mm, otherwise the engagement is impossible: this means that as a zoom it loses part of its versatility, in the sense that we will have a 300-700 mm (with the ex. 1.4x), or a 300-1000 (with the ex. 2x), in addition to the fact that to carry it duplicate in the backpack, the latter must be decidedly large, in order to accommodate such a long optics .... Having said that I would buy it again, because it absolutely does not disappoint, but giving up the extender, which in fact I resold. |
sent on December 17, 2021 Pros: All Cons: Nobody Opinion: Taken today, very lucky given the shortage of Canon lenses and not only of this period. I am very satisfied, nothing to say the quality is top. A magnificent lens, for me who love photographic hunting, I could not ask for more. It costs too much but, the quality you pay... I come from a sigma 60-600 but there is absolutely no comparison. |

sent on November 26, 2021 Pros: Lightweight, can be used without adapter, accurate and fast AF Cons: price, price and price Opinion: I hesitated a lot since I had the 100-400mm II that I already found perfect, but now this seems better to me. Lighter (those who know me can understand how important some etti can be), 100mm more, perfect AF, precise and very fast, very sharp (even compared to 100-400mmII), excellent stabilization, minimum distance of 90cm at 100mm ... I confirm everything that has already been written ... the price a bit 'exaggerated but in line with other RF ... but for me it is definitive !!!! |
sent on November 26, 2021 Pros: Lightweight, sharp at full aperture, super precise and lightning-fast focus, tropicalized Cons: The price that if compared to the competition is a bit out of tune. Opinion: I come from a Tamron 150-600 G2 that has never fully satisfied me on my 5D Mark IV and now that I have switched to the R5 it bothers me to use it. Ballerina focus, photos kneaded even with the diaphragm closed. So I decided, I put aside the money (I think the only sore point of this lens) and after months of waiting (lens always not available both on the Canon store and elsewhere) I took the plunge. Finally I can after a few days of use I can sum up. Objective promoted with flying colors!!! Sharpness on another planet compared to the Tamron, ultra fast focusing, excellent stabilization (on static subjects at @500mm you can shoot at 1/20s and have sharp photos in 80% of the shots), super compact and lightweight! Yes, if it had been an F/5.6 to @500mm would certainly have pleased but it would certainly have been affected by the price and weight! PS: Bonuses not to be underestimated the minimum focusing distance! At @500mm is only 1.2mt which makes it great for "macro" photos of relatively large subjects such as reptiles, amphibians, flowers, butterflies and escapes. |

sent on May 24, 2021 Pros: Very light, versatile, very portable, excellent compendium to an important fixed canvas, in a photonaturalist backpack must not be missing. Crisp to TA at all focals (beautiful thing), well built (it's an L Canon series), removable tripod ring. Windows on the lampshon that facilitates use with polarizers when used in landscaping. IS primacy when paired with an R Canon. Multiplicable at least until the use of the dedicated TC1.4X RF. Cons: Paraluce a little cheap, external extension when in pronounced zoommata, but always well balanced, lack of distance scale on the barrel (now they all do so, it's the new fashion). Very expensive. Opinion: I have had it for a month, I did not use it much, but I immediately fell in love with its versatility, excellent zoom, impressive how sharp it is at full opening even at 500mm, despite the F7.1 diaphragm that sacrifices its use a little (you go up with iso, but you can not expect everything). Lightweight to take anywhere, extreme improves or the already excellent 100-400 ISII, compact and very fast, nano motors, you can not even hear scrolling, it goes to targets in no time and very effectively. Very valid lens to be used even in the video scope (which I do not do). The programmable ring to which I dedicated the sneening of the exhibition is precise and fluid and very comfortable. It's a nice surprise that such a compact zoom, with the limitations of the case, manages to return extreme sharpness in such compactness and multipliability. I reserve the right to modify the review also according to the use to which I will submit it in the near future, affixed to the excellent 500 F4 ISII. |
sent on January 22, 2021 Pros: Construction from optics series Luxury, low weight, precision and speed of autofocus, stabilizer, focal excursion from 100 mm to 500 mm that allows a lot of versatility of use; the minimum focus distance in both W and L is indicated on the body; inline lampshed; front lens filter diameter 77mm; 5-stop declared stabilization for optics, customizable ring as for other "short" optics Cons: Price (in line with RF optics that are among the most "expensive" in the MR market, but quality is paid...); when the lens is closed it is very compact, but at 500 mm the forward excursion "feels"...; you can't remove the ring for the tripod Opinion: The RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 lens is the first focal travel zoom from 100 to 500 mm dedicated to MR Canons; the optics do not have practically vignetting at all focal lengths and at all iris openings; as far as distortion is concerned, this bearing is very low in the focal range from 100mm to 200mm, plus accentuated at 500 mm diaphragm f/7.1; the evaluation of chromatic aberration is nothing at 100-200mm, while at 500 mm there is a bit of magenta aberration (very modest). In my opinion the flare resistance is excellent and spectacular turns out to be the star effect with diaphragm closed at the maximum focal length. I close my review by focusing on 2 aspects that I find of the highest level: stabilization, which is really spectacular (with a steady hand you can easily reach 4 stops) and sharpness. The latter, at a focal length of 100 mm, at full opening is already very marked reaching a very high level at f/8; at 500 mm it is to be blown away and it is not necessary, if not in specific cases, to close the diaphragm beyond f/7.1...I recommend this zoom lens to photograph birdlife in good light /wild in general and for sports photography /action in general; it can also be very useful in the landscape field. Basically in one word it is a zoom to always carry with you ... |
sent on October 20, 2020 Pros: impeccable construction, weight, autofocus, stabilizer, focal range, versatility, balance, image quality even at 500mm f/7.1. Cons: price, foot for tripod not replaceable, it would have been interesting a sign or a stop on the ring of the focals at the various diaphragms. The white lampshed doesn't drive me crazy Opinion: The challenge with the EF 100-400mm was really challenging, but this RF 100-500mm really adds an important piece, in terms of power, handling and versatility to the series of new RF lenses. It is a lens with extraordinary performance, which gives an image quality and color rendering as only the best optics in the L series can do. This zoom lens will undoubtedly become a faithful travel companion of all those who for weight reasons will have to choose a light and compact equipment, to be easily handled freehand, without trestles and monofts. Nothing better for mountain wildlife or for all those destinations where light abounds and superluminous telephoto lenses are not needed, such as Africa or the North at America.Il price to the public today is really high, but I believe that those who choose this powerful zoom, will be really satisfied. At Canon the high cost of some products has been (in most cases) synonymous with uncompromising quality. I tried this lens for three days in Slovenia (thanks to Adcom Bologna) and if anyone cares about my site StefanoFranceschetti.com on the stories page I published a small review with my first impressions in the field. |
