Pros: Yield, brightness, weight and size

Cons: Materials and lack of a tripod mount (but you can't expect a lightweight lens without compromise)

Opinion: I was evaluating the Sony 70–200 and, regardless of the price difference, I realized quite quickly that for me the real discriminator was size and weight. It is a lens that I can wear effortlessly even on the longest days, and this really makes the difference. Using it in the field I realized that it offers me exactly what I am looking for: quality, versatility and a yield that I really like. It quickly became my favorite lens and for about a year now, I have been traveling practically only with this lens and a 35 mm, both in a small travel bag — light, practical and always ready to use.

Pros: Sharpness, weight, brightness, color rendering, usability

Cons: Maybe some uncertainty in the AF with little light, some command that is missing as observed by others, but for the price I think it is normal.

Opinion: I really can not say that good of this lens, certainly referred to the use I make of it, that of aspiring amateur photographer who often shoots in the street. I mounted it on a Sony A7IV, which allows me to venture a little with the crop. Well the photos taken with this lens lose almost nothing in terms of quality even if cropped beyond what is necessary. The sharpness is also excellent at f / 2.8, although I noticed a not exactly negligible percentage of out of focus in conditions of little lusce and all aperture. I do not know if this is due to the Sony-Tamron combo or simply it is me who demands too much or I who make too many mistakes, also because the photos in the right focus including the close-ups, taken with an open aperture, come out beautiful. I also managed to open it easily to remove some dust under the first lens. Actually the aesthetics does not completely satisfy, but this is not a point to discuss, this is a very good goal, really.

Pros: SHARPNESS - AF SPEED - PORTABILITY - QUALITY/PRICE RATIO

Cons: UNABLE TO ADD MULTIPLIERS - EXTERNAL ZOOM - NO AF/MF BUTTON

Opinion: I bought this lens on the advice of a friend on the forum and enticed by the amazon offer (944 €). I was very torn as I was in love with the format 70/200 2.8 home Sony (clearly another lens that is worth its cost but is not 3 times better than tamron....). To date I say that it is a spectacular purchase for yield, definition (I use it on a7riii) autofocus even in low light situations, practicality in size and in carrying it behind. I often go out with 17/28 tamron and 70/180 and I don't have big shortcomings. In my opinion the main "defect" lies in the impossibility of using multipliers, in the absence of the physical mf button and in the aesthetic aspect that does not make me crazy ... Would recommend? absolutely YOU !!! PS I made a comparison with the 70-300 tamron vr sony-a and despite the 70/180 has less excursion the quality for the same effective size using digital crop of a high-resolution camera is much better on the 70-180. The 70-300 at 300mm kneads everything and is therefore less usable.

Pros: Definition, AF speed, aperture, handling.

Cons: for now nothing

Opinion: I am an amateur photographer and I will not deal with technical details reserved for professionals. Recently I have this lens mounted on Sony 7C and the field test were photos taken at the Mille Miglia just ended. I come from Canon 6D system and 70-200 f4 and I was totally satisfied with this 70-180. amazed by the definition, and also the focus in C was always up to par. It manages well and weight is not a problem. Highly recommended rating 9.8.

Pros: Weight, weight, sharpness, AF speed

Cons: Nothing and for the cost you can not ask for anything else

Opinion: I took about 200 shots with the A7III and I must say with excellent results. I arrived here , I try to be honest, not to spend twice as much for the Sony counterpart. Of course there are 20 focal lengths missing but for now I have not felt the lack. I also followed shots inside (gym) with excellent results of colors, I was worried, surprised by the speed of AF even in conditions of non-optimal light and bokeh. The plastics, sometimes not wonderful beds, give me a good feeling to the touch and the solidity of the whole is not lacking. Value for money, excellent. Highly recommended I switched to the A7RIII from March 2023 and the results are always excellent, perhaps a little slower in the AF / c phase, but this does not depend on the lens but on the body ...

Pros: Sharpness, weight, fast af, price

Cons: Definitely nothing at this price

Opinion: Sublime optics. (I use it on sony A7III) Excellent sharpness, af never uncertain, weight compared to other lenses of similar focal length really zero. Of defects has none for this price, you can make portraits with a bokeh always excellent and honestly the lack of stabilization is not felt at all (perhaps also because when I have to do long times I always put on tripod) having a camera body that does not suffer the high iso I have no problems. Also used in harsh climatic conditions such as fog and snow at the same time and performs very well. Beautiful optics that I recommend especially to those who do trekking (because of the weight) and for those who make portraits. For nature photography you can do well even if you are a little short (not born for this obviously). For sports photos I still have to try it, maybe I'll update the review. If you look in my profile many photos are made with this lens.

Pros: Optical quality, size, weight, feeling of solidity.

Cons: Lack of controls on the lens body, finishes, focus breathing

Opinion: I purchased this lens for portrait and landscape, so with some attention to the portability of the lens. I use an A9mk2. I also tried the 70-200/4 G and the 70-200/2.8 GM. The sony both have a complete lens body, with excellent finishes and an important feeling of solidity. The GM however despite being light for a 2.8 is too heavy for my needs. The G is perfect even if I was a bit scared by the reports on the web of a break in the middle of the lens with non-critical stresses. From an optical point of view between the Sony G and the Tamron there is no comparison. Sharpness, bokeh, resolution and of course openness are all in favor of tamron and much too. The only point where the Sony wins is the fidelity of the colors: I find the Sony more neutral while the Tamron in certain light conditions returns warmer shades. For me it is an excellent lens, which as optical quality plays with the 70-200/2.8 flagship while maintaining compactness and lightness. We must congratulate Tamron for this really well done project.

Pros: Lightness, yield, autofocus speed, quality/price ratio

Cons: Materials, build quality, lack of keys

Opinion: If you are looking for an excellent telephoto zoom, bright, sharp (even with 60 mpx cameras) and you do not need focal lengths from 300mm upwards, this is the choice I recommend. The weight is incomparable compared to the corresponding 70-200 f/2.8-f/4 and the optical yield is higher, thanks to the recent design that takes into account the sensors with many megapixels. The focus is very accurate, fast and quiet, one of the best I could try. The 20mm of lack compared to the 70-200 are absolutely negligible, recoverable with an extra step. Are they not enough? Then not even a 200mm would be enough. The lack of the stabilizer I do not consider it all in all a defect. it is true, the stabilization on the sensor is less effective than that on the optics or the optical + sensor combo, but framing the field of action of this tele may not be so necessary. To make portraits you still need a fast time, even more so if you photograph animals. For landscapes, on the other hand, the stabilizer may not be useful at all. In summary, in 15 months of use I have never missed it. Lack that instead I felt for the AF / MF button and for some materials a little more valuable. The ones employed are not bad, but they seem more prone to scratches than, for example, a GM. The build quality is good but nothing more, in some parts, especially in the hood, you can see the joints of the mold. The sharpness is already at the top of f/2.8 and appreciable is the 67mm filter diameter. The value for money is unbeatable. The lack of an adapter ring can be solved by buying a generic one (in my case at 40 € I took the Haoge LMR-TL718, well made and with internal velvet). Automatic corrections in LR are quite limited, native distortion is contained as well as vignetting. it is a well-designed lens.

Pros: Lightness, size, prices, overall optical quality

Cons: Basic build quality, lack of optical stabilizer

Opinion: Purchased for use on a Sony Alpha M3. Lightweight, compact and of more than satisfactory optical quality, especially compared to the price, extremely lower than any other option for Sony. I don't think there are any other options at the moment (2021) without selling a kidney and/or going on fixed. However it is absolutely not a low-quality fallback option.

Pros: lightness, 2.8 opening, compactness, 10-year warranty, AF

Cons: Difficult manual MAF, lack of AF/MF button, no customizable button

Opinion: Beautiful optics, beautiful yield, high sharpness even at the most open, light and compact diaphragms, took the place without regret at 70-200. Fast and precise AF. The biggest flaw is the difficulty of manual focus, no button or switch, which always forces a few too many passages... if they had put this blessed switch and maybe even a programmable button.. would be the TOP. Positive aspect: Tamron warranty 5 years + another 5 years Poliphoto.. total 10 years...

Pros: Quality, price, brightness, and above all lightness...

Cons: Still nothing

Opinion: I gave back my 70 200 GM to buy the 70 180 Tamron, but before you take me for crazy I tell you that I did it "only" for a matter of weight, unfortunately some back problem made me reconsider the choice on the Sony 70/200 f/2.8 GM lens to "fall back" on this Tamron. Well I have to say I'm not sorry at all. I'm not a professional so I can't evaluate the lens from a technical point of view but in the first holiday where he followed me to the Dolomites for 5 days always on me, well I have to say that I absolutely did not regret. Bright as the GM though with 20 mm less than they don't seem to weigh; the quality is great; the Af on my sony A7RIV remained the same, fast and precise even at low brightness; Lastly not in order of importance, it is the difference in weight that compared to 70/200 2.8 GM seems a lighter abyss. That's the wonderful thing that essentially rests on my choice and I would never go back to. Clearly for those who work with photography, and has the 70/200 GM will never change it and it does well because I know it is one of the best lenses that exists in the Sony lens park, we would miss it, but for those like me who like photographing on the street so many hours and the weight makes its difference, will not regret having the tamron 70/180. The lack of stabilization is not felt at all both because of the lightness of the lens and because it is used on an already stabilized machine. In short, for now maybe also because of the little time I have it I did not find negative points, and as Aznavour sang: ... forgive me if...

Pros: brightness, weight and price

Cons: I just bought it, I made 10 shots and I did not report any particular defects (I'm not a technician)

Opinion: The value for money and handling seems to me great, to be evaluated over time. The difference of 20mm between a 70-200 (I gave back my Sony f/4) is not that serious considering the gain in f/2.8 brightness and weight. The lack of stabilization is not felt given the weight and using it on stabilized machine
