sent on 14 Luglio 2021 Pros: Everythink Cons: Nothing Opinion: The lens is was introduced with the A7 series into the market. At that time the cameras were the limiting factor. Since the Sony A7R II you can enjoy the full performance of this lens which is ranked currently as #7 in DxOMark. The lens reaches maximum resoltution in the center at f4 while the edges are at f11 at its best. There is a test report in the internet which shows the values for the lens mounted on a A7R and a A7R II https://www.digitalkamera.de/Zubeh%C3%B6r-Test/Testbericht_Sony_FE_55_mm_1_8_Sonnar_T_ZA_SEL-55F18Z/9187.aspx So the lens is still a great performer in 2021. Considering size and weight there is nothing better. So when you shoot with Zeiss glass, you want to have the Zeiss pop up effect. That delivers the lens, even at f4 it is noticable. The seperation of an subject from the background is simply great. The lens provides rich details of the subject, while the background is blurred. The colors and the contrast are typically Zeiss.

sent on 04 Gennaio 2024 Pros: Optics that are worth a system Cons: Nobody Opinion: Really analog bokeh, color rendering that stands out from Sony rendering, very small lens and fun to use, af selector, great for portraits, street, architecture .. today you can spend little and combine it with dated bodies such as A7III becoming a fundamental complement of a Sony layette, in my way of seeing the portrait I prefer the 55 combined with the 135
sent on 11 Gennaio 2023 Pros: Small, sharp, fast Cons: I don't know Opinion: I'm using it recently on A7III but the first impressions are really remarkable, small, very sharp, easy to carry because the combo with the A7III is perfect and balanced, a splinter, I found only some uncertainty in the maf but probably because I did not bet correctly, and maybe I could also improve the setting of the machine. The colors for me are fantastic as well as the definition, Zeiss will count for something, the famous loss of definition at the edges so much claimed in other reviews does not seem so obvious to me. I was amazed above all by the almost absent postproduction so much is the quality of the file that you get, paradoxically you have to work a little more passing to the b & w but already how it is born it would be fine. I come from an apsc also of good level, but I must say that there is no comparison. For me very approved, and I would say to evaluate it for what it is, that is, a work tool not a collector's item. instagram.com/mmarzaro57
sent on 11 Novembre 2022 Pros: Sharpness, Construction, Price-Quality, Bokeh, Speed af Cons: Suffering in contrasts; The price in my opinion is, at the moment, in accordance with the value Opinion: I have owned the Sony 55 f1.8 Zeiss for about 2 years. I had the opportunity to test it in 1001 circumstances, such as Portraiture, Ceremonies and Street. Undoubtedly the focal length, together with the generous diaphragm, make the coveted "Portrait" its workhorse. The image quality is really good, the sharpness in the center is decent at 1.4, excellent at 1.8. The feeling in handling this lens is to have in your hands an instrument of excellent workmanship that, if used well, can give infinite satisfaction. Incomparable yield with the smooth 1.8, and at the same time unjustifiable the price difference with Plannar T 1.4. Advised.
sent on 10 Luglio 2022 Pros: Lightness, sharpness, f1.8 without compromise, low vignetting, filter diameter 49mm, build quality, very nice bokeh with cats eye and in some cases slightly swirl, saturation and color rendering in particular red and blue. Cons: Chromatic aberrations in some situations of high contrast, in other situations non-existent, high price maintained over the years. Opinion: The optics that I use the most, in any situation and genre, perfect for the first A7, a compact, light and high quality system. Focus breathing can be a problem for those who make many videos, not making many you do not notice. Fantastic the blurred, swirl and with cats eye that I often hear not "perfectly circular", I prefer it so, a very nice effect especially for portraits in the presence of trees and vegetation, instead less swirling with stones and pebbles. Overall a real bargain for the price of the used, there are no similar optics in any system, quality confirmed by the tests carried out over the years.
sent on 05 Maggio 2022 Pros: Lightness sharpness autofocus and dial for manual focus Cons: it costs a lot and can't stand contrast light Opinion: the best 50ino sony ever makes beautiful photos ... compared to the economic models it has the manual bezel and a very precise focus system allows you to focus endlessly so it always reacts well at all times and does not go crazy, it is tropicalized even if it does not have a gasket on the attack but patience, it is very light compared to the other portrait fixed you do not realize that you have it with you
sent on 16 Gennaio 2022 Pros: Sharpness, overall appearance, weight and small size Cons: Spherochromatism up to f/2.8 Opinion: Very nice lens, with excellent construction. Sharp already at full aperture and with a beautiful blur. He suffers a bit of spherochromatism which in my opinion is his only major flaw. I tested it comparing it to the Sony 50 f/2.5 "G" and the Samyang 50mm FE II and (in my very personal test) it turned out to be the one I preferred to the three. (if anyone wants to see the images I used for the test, they can go to my site www.marcograssi.it).
sent on 22 Novembre 2021 Pros: luminous fixed weight quality Cons: a bit the price Opinion: Lens that meets the qualities that I usually look for in a perspective, namely: high quality, fixed and bright lens and lightness. This lens in my opinion is not to be compared to other cheaper 1.8 lenses that exist in the market, here we are beyond and the quality as always you pay a little more. Together with the sony 14mm 1.8, the zeiss batis 18mm 2.8 and the sony 135 1.8 it entered by right in my photographic backpack for the merits that I have listed above. Rating 9.8
sent on 20 Maggio 2021 Pros: sharpness, weight,af,colors Cons: Focus breathing Opinion: I think it's the best lens at this sony focal point for those who take pictures for those who make videos a little less because the lens suffers bloody from focus breathing and for which sealing in videos is not the best.... that said, even though I make more videos than photos in the end I think I'll keep it for my photo exits....

sent on 09 Marzo 2021 Pros: Construction, image quality, sharpness, price of used Cons: Eye AF sometimes inaccurate, minimum focus distance Opinion: It is a really excellent optics for yield and sharpness, already fully usable at full opening becomes amazing from f/2.8. Used on A7rII the AF is precise and fast, however with the Eye AF it makes it a little difficult to hook faces especially in situations with low brightness (but maybe it is the copy I have on probation). The focal is a bit suitable for everything and the small size always entices you to have it in the bag. If we want to find defects, I would say that the minimum focus distance (55cm) is not exhilarating but you get used to it. The price of the new maybe is a little high for an f/1.8
sent on 09 Marzo 2020 Pros: Light, good image quality, construction, colors Cons: It doesn't make me cry "to the miracle" but I don't see any flaws Opinion: I decided to sell my 85mm GM because I wanted something a shorter focal and especially smaller and lighter than the 85mm. In this I have achieved my purpose. I move much better doing street with a 55mm that weighs less than 300g compared to before with an 85mm of almost 900g. So I don't regret making that choice. For everything else, however, this 55mm has not thrilled me yet and maybe never will. Speaking of what I do not like I would say that even the size could be even smaller. At the end of the day it's a 55mm f1.8! The first impressions, of the first months of use, were not exciting. I felt it inferior to everything I had read about him until that day. Then, after taking him out of the car for a few weeks, I gave him a new opportunity. In the meantime I changed the setting of my af and now it's like I have a new lens in my hand. Now it gives me satisfaction. I still do not consider it a phenomenon but, now that we have become friends, I have finally started to rejoice and receive images that I like and that give me satisfaction. Before, using it on the A7rII in AF-S I had a good percentage of photos not perfectly in focus and therefore it was also fallacious the perception of its intrinsic sharpness. Now it is very good even at ta and enhances even more something that I liked right away. The colors. I don't know how much of Zeiss there is in this lens but the colors, for sure, are much more Zeiss than Sony! Beautiful indeed. Speaking of blurry and "magic" after having the 85GM........ I get a little sick. However this 55 has character and "stamp" and this is what I have always looked for in a lens. So now I feel good and I get what I want. I'm satisfied. As usual some who reviewed it have counted among the flaws silly things as the price is aesthetics. The flaw, by definition, is an unexpected thing that one was unaware of. The price is high but you know it before you buy it. The aesthetics....... we are talking about a pair of shoes to wear on Sunday or a lens to be mounted on the machine with which to take pictures????? My current kit consists of 28mm (fabulous) and this 55. In two they weigh less than half a kg and I keep them in my pocket. For my kind of photography these are things to be counted in the merits. Recommended. Vote 9 MS
sent on 15 Febbraio 2020 Pros: compact, light and crisp Cons: Price Opinion: Purchased from about a month I have to say that I am very satisfied:used on the 7RIII behaves really very well, pleasant the out of focus. Fast firing and precise diaphragm. The sharpness seemed to me decidedly good, likely next purchase other optical series zeiss. Really a nice 55, to consider if, like me, you do not own an 85 mm!
sent on 14 Gennaio 2020 Pros: Construction, size, weight, yield Cons: Minimum focus distance, price Opinion: Great lens: crisp, precise, quiet and fast. The price is quite expensive for a 1.8, but the yield is very good. I chose it as small and light, otherwise I would have opted for the 50 1.4 ZA, which has an extra gear but is a bulky boulder. I use it on A7III and overall I am very satisfied with the purchase.
sent on 04 Gennaio 2020 Pros: bokeh, sharpness, colors, fast and precise af, construction, compactness Cons: price, minimum focus distance Opinion: A lens that At first I underestimated, using it little (I'm not one from 50ini but more from 85mm) but then I re-evaluated in an extremely positive way. Sharp already at full opening, very light but built very well, it is a fantastic handyman, if I had to go out with a single lens would be this. The color yield is fantastic, it suffers a thread of full-open aberrations but nothing unsolvable, and the full-opening sharpness is slightly lower than the Samyang 50mm F1.4 or Sigma, but there is always talk of excellent sharpness and it is a compromise to which you have to go meeting given the size practically halved compared to the little brothers. the minimum distance of focus is unfortunately a distant thread, but here it is the quality of the bokeh that dominates: it is a poetic, modern optics and that for portraits or for the street is perfect, has character and a great detachment of the floors despite being a 1.8 does not make me regret most of the 1.4. I read that some people were disappointed by the construction, but I don't see how: it's all metal, the lampshade is also partly metal and partly rubber to absorb the bumps, the focus dial is precise and the design on my own is excellent. A lens that is not "perfect" but that you can fall in love with, absolutely recommended
sent on 11 Settembre 2019 Pros: Sharpness, blurry, colors, af, light and compact, construction... Cons: Price? Opinion: A lens that you love or hate. I personally, left the initial skeptics and trying it on the field, I'm adoring it so much that the 85 FE for the kind of shots I prefer stays locked in the backpack since I bought this 55 :D Focal in my opinion ideal for portraits set or semi-set, whole bodies and half busts with excellent sharpness already at 1.8 that closing slightly (and here I steal the term used in another review because I particularly liked) becomes 'moving'. Excellent rendering of colors and backlight but graphics and technicalities I leave them to the most experienced. I really like the blurring and the "detachment" although it clearly depends on light and background. Af fast and silent. I preferred it to that boulder of Sigma Art despite the price lined up (except offers) because of the small size and the reduced weight sacrificing a little brightness. Let's talk about the price: it's true, 800-900 euros are quite especially if you think it's "only" a 1.8 and maybe I would never have spent them but I found on Amazon an attractive and including cashback offer cost me in total about 540 euros, clearly new. In my opinion even if the quality there is all the "right" price is between 500/600 but I would have been satisfied even if I had bought it in full :)
sent on 04 Luglio 2019 Pros: Sharpness, light weight, little footprint, high-performance focus, colors Cons: none, except the price a little high, but indeed like all top optics :-) Opinion: Big 50ino, which has nothing to envy to the various sigma art except their bokeh and blur to f1.4. The 55 zeiss sonnar f1.8 is an optic that has an incredible sharpness and chromatic rendering, a focus that never misses a beat, even in situations of little light. Unlike many similar optics, it does not suffer from back-front focus and never needs to be calibrated, with ring adapter you can safely mount screw filters from 77-82mm. Definitely a lens that for a sony user should never miss in the backpack!
sent on 12 Maggio 2019 Pros: Remarkable sharpness from f2, really great from f2.8; small weight and size, good detachment of the floors Cons: Price on the new without promotions and exaggerated discounts. Important chromatic aberrations and unattractive bokeh in certain situations (foliage). Opinion: Thanks to a good offer on Amazon and cashback, after using the Sony 50 FE f1.8 I decided to switch to the big brother. The sharpness difference between the two in the range f2 - f2.8 is remarkable: you can already see zooming the 24mpx to 50%. The 55 is a good lens; In my opinion, however, it is no better than the Sony 85 FE f1.8 in terms of sharpness and speed/precision of autofocus. The detachment of the floors is very good, the blurry is pleasant and progressive (but only as long as you do not have thin foliage too close). The color yield is great, quite cold, from Zeiss lens. The autofocus is super quiet and fast, but not always flawless in low-contrast situations. It's really compact and weighs little and that's why I preferred it to other lenses, as it's ideal for Sony's mirrorless philosophy.
sent on 04 Maggio 2019 Pros: sharpness, color, blurred, weight, AF Cons: Slight vignetting and distortion at the edges Opinion: Sorry, but I write my first review here on the forum because I do not understand certain criticisms. I've had this lens on the Sony A7, it's one of the best lenses I've ever tried, and after being switched to Nikon and Fuji is one of the reasons I would go back to Sony. The portraits taken on the fly with this lens are pure magic for colors, sharpness, boke, and this in every light condition (indoors with poor or mixed lighting for example). The issue AF, ie the loss of fire in some cases, I think depends on the machine rather than the goal. Never used with the lens hood, never had any flare problems I believe for antireflective treatment. The price is high, of course, but some lenses cost more and if you look at the pictures you understand why
sent on 03 Maggio 2019 Pros: Excellent sharpness Cons: Unwatchable lens hood, prohibitive price, optically far from relying €900 Opinion: If the Zeiss 35mm f2.8 I reviewed it very badly, this I must directly destroy it. I do not quite understand the mechanism for which a company thinks to propose a 50mm f 1.8 to over €900, also offering a lens far from being able to feel perfect. I do not talk about AC, sharpness and trivialities similar, because they are objective data that between exemplary and exemplary can have an uncertainty of 5%, and I find it superfluous to talk about it again being the web full of reviews. I would rather talk about the embarrassing construction of a €900 lens. Do you see photos of this lens with the hood mounted? Few, because it is horrendous and most unnecessary. If the graft is passable, inwardly does not have any velvet, knurling, and laterally it is reduced to a negligible size so as not to be able to perform its function. What's the point of a lens hood like that? By the way it is just ugly to look, enlaring compared to the central barrel like a mushroom (not to be vulgar). Zeiss confirms itself once again unfit to produce lenses with AF. So much I like manual lenses, how much I despise those with AF (of this House you mean). The bayonet is also plasticose, and does not transmit a feeling of quality. All of this would have been permissible for a lens as it can be a Nikon 50 1.8 G from €150, not for a "Zeiss" from over €900. No one denies that it is a compact lens and more or less metal, but to that figure is a crazy and reckless purchase. By the way we are not talking about a Zeiss of future historical interest, but a "consumer" object. To make comparisons already a Samyang 50 1.4 (which we do not forget costs half) would guarantee significantly higher performance. Also because objectively it is not a "pancake" lens, although some reviews might imply, and the dimensions are almost identical to the Samyang (for now single-term comparison in the mirrorless world except the Zeiss 50 1.4). Unfortunately many reviews here on Juza are written by customers who have handsomely paid for what they are reviewing, and therefore inevitably can not be objective. This lens is a clear example. By the way I read about a user who talks about the lens hood inwardly, something that my absolutely is not, and looking for online I had confirmation. Just search on google Sony sh131 (lens Hood Code of this lense) to realize that such a knurling does not exist.
sent on 05 Gennaio 2019 Pros: dimenisions, weight, anti-reflective treatment Cons: nothing blatant Opinion: I bought it at 500 degrees used about a year ago. I really like it, especially for the size. The quality of the materials is excellent. Paired with my a7R II is really unwieldy. In fact, I take them every day with me. To make street is ideal. It has a very good definition and ad f/4 is almost moving. But it also has a very pleasant blur. The af is not foolproof. But how much depends on the lens and how much does it depend on the camera? Boh, I don't know. However, it happened (rarely have to say) that some shots taken on the fly missed them greatly. In short, 9 times out of 10 focuses perfectly. I'm always talking about shots taken on the fly, mind you, because if you have time to focus, 1 or 2 seconds, don't miss a shot. The lack of sharpness at the edges I did not upset. It depends on the genre you do, probably. And I didn't test myself, like photographing a newspaper page in full frame. Of course, if the issue of size had not been my priority, I would surely have also considered a Sigma Art. But this is it! If you do street with 50mm, if size matters to you and you also want autofocus you have no alternative. It's the top. There's little to do! I'm literally in love with it. I will only sell it if I change brands. Update to February 15, 2020: I've been using it for a couple of months mounted on a9. Formidable pairing. And autofocus, with shots on the fly, doesn't miss a beat.
sent on 04 Novembre 2018 Pros: Record size and weight. Cons: Not a monster in terms of pure optical rendering. Opinion: If you are looking for a fixed bright good performance for your "itinerant" photographic set-up then this sonnar is the mandatory choice because for size and weight you can't beat it. It looks like a lens for smaller sizes, like the ones for micro 4/3. But if you are looking for a fixed luminous with the highest optical performance then better look elsewhere, not necessarily more expensive, for example the Sigma Art 50 mm. By pulling the sums of all aspects concerning optical performance, I summarize with a vote of 7.5. What you read around the Web is in good substance all true: a moderate longitudinal CA not always completely recoverable in post and a vignetting a little ' greater than other fixed 1.8, while recovering votes for the absence of other defects such as astigmatism and The lateral CA. AF silent and fast enough. Precise too, but it depends mainly on the machine. The sharpness is great in the middle and falls to the edges. How much? Here it seems that there is a problem because you read everything and the opposite of everything. On the edges of this 55 one reads that "They are pity" or that "they are good". At this point it is thought that there is or existed a manufacturing problem. My specimen however did not suffer from particular problems, I do not know how to quantify the difference between center and edges, I say that you only notice to monitor 100% but nothing that makes think of a flaw. I've seen worse in more expensive lenses. Even the benchmarks of the newspapers disagree on the edges. However, as well as the mathematical measures, the lens is good, but not stratospheric as someone wants to believe. For me it is in line with the other 50 1.8 coupons, and so this Zeiss being sold between 800 and 1000 euros, I would say it costs too much. However if you look for comfort there are no alternatives. I changed it for the Sigma 50 Art because I do not use this type of lens to walk and therefore I can sacrifice handling and portability but gaining a little something in terms of pure optical performance. PS: I do not know why they consider it a sonnar, if you look at the original optical patterns, it seems to me there is little in common.
sent on 07 Luglio 2018 Pros: Construction, weight Cons: Minimum distance of MAF, outrageous price on the new, edges, AF sometimes hesitant Opinion: I purchased this lens used as the very first lens for my Sony A7R III, the lens looks built very well and with size and compactness to which I was not accustomed (before I owned D800 and Sigma Art 50). The ring nuts have a nice endless excursion with a good feedback, the hood is very well built and equipped with a knurled internal coating to avoid "bounces" of light. As for the photographic compartment this lens has convinced me less, we clarify right from the start: about sharpness nothing to say, but with regard to the homogeneity of the frame, accuracy of the MAF and the minimum distance of MAF is not for nothing well. It has a distance of huge MAF and the AF shows itself too many times hesitant, not to mention the price that for me is the real sore note of this lens. I do not doubt that many people may like and/or excite the fact that "mirrors the mirrorless philosophy" etc, but a lens before being light/beautiful to see/What you want must be efficient and this alas is not. The Sigma Art 50 costs €300 in less (weighs even almost half a kilo more) but returns a blurry and the files that this unfortunately if you dream them. I think I will sell it to resume the 50 Art in configuration with the MC-11 or with more FE attack in the
sent on 21 Marzo 2017 Pros: Construction - AF - Sharpness - Compactness Cons: Price? Opinion: The question mark next to the counter I put it because some think 700 euros and broken to have a diaphragm 1.8 cinquantino may seem exaggerated, but in reality to me, after trying it for good, not sono.rnLa construction impeccable and satisfies touch, including lens hood (metal), af lightning and really "smooth" nuts, as would say crazy inglesi.rnNitidezza the center also 1.8, falls slightly at the edges, but is still very good, compact and handy, for me that I love that I found really a focal trusty traveling companion in this little friend! rn
sent on 19 Agosto 2016 Pros: Impeccable construction, fast Af, sharpness in the center Cons: Little uniformity between center and edges, exaggerated price for a 55 1.8 Opinion: A lens that would be amazing if it were not that the difference in yield between edge and center is really excessive. I do not know if it was a problem of my exemplary fact is that I also sent in assistance and I was told that it is normal. If you use the blur in the TA and the colors are very beautiful but if you want to use for some detail, even diaphragm af // 8, you notice a sharp drop in sharpness up to about 15/20% from the edge. For a 55 1.8 from almost € 900 I would sincerely expect a lot more. The votes here are always too high! It is 10 to even good lenses but if you give 10 to this to an Otus what do we give ?? rnrnEdit: I bought a second copy after a year, which is much more uniform between the edges and the center. It should therefore be noted that there is a lack of uniformity between specimens.

Opinion: It is now a year that I do photography and is a year that use the fixed 50cc, initially this seemed too realistic than the Nikon lenses, but once taken hand with lightroom and learned how to change the colors properly and correct the sferocromatismo (very more complicated aberrations which instead are absent), then it becomes a lens can give unforgettable moments with great satisfaction especially in BN, which has a yield that does not envy anything to a monochrome. AF only thing not very fast, especially if it is not mounted on a a7RII. |

The quality of the images returned is impressive sharpness even at TA is disarming, then on A7RII it is a show. The engine is quiet and fast AF, the focus ring to focus the fluid flows so, the bayonet mates perfectly with the camera's flange (zero games). Bello also the lens hood coated within a material, rubber-like, opaque to decrease further reflection. |

For landscape photos or close-up autofocus is a useless and often harmful shortcut, especially by providing a convenient magnification that allows even a blind man like me to focus carefully and bring home the desired result (it was NOT so, for me, with the camera that I used, even with good viewfinders as the alpha 900; yes there that helped me autofocus ....). rnCiao at all, rnsandro |

sent on 16 Aprile 2015 Pros: build quality, sharpness, focus ring soft Cons: size slightly excessive for a 50ino, but it's just finding the hair in the egg ... Opinion: This Sony Zeiss was definitely one of my best purchases in photography! The price for a F1.8 lens is very high, but the cost in my opinion is rewarded by truly exceptional quality of this lens. Let's go step by step. The build quality is really top notch. Barrel absolutely solid with no moving parts outside, except of course the ring focus, soft and with the race "without end." An important factor is that depending on how you use the dial also changes the sensitivity of the latter, allowing a focus super accurate. Let me give an example to explain. If you turn the wheel with a quick movement will go from minimum distance of focus to infinity in 3 or 4 cm of displacement of the ring. If the move slowly, those 3 or 4 cm of rotation we will make a correction much smaller. You have to get used to, but after a while 'the system will become irreplaceable, especially when shooting video. Even the lente front is particular, not with a convex shape as usually happens, but with a concave shape, this to reduce chromatic aberrations (if I remember correctly). Another small detail that makes us understand the high quality of this Zeiss is the fact that inside the box, in addition to the small instruction manual and warranty, there is also a card with the serial number and the name of the technician which tested the lens before it goes on sale! It seems right to point this out because I had never happened before, it aims to do for bodies macchina.rnInfine as not to mention the performance. There is little to say, I feel just wonderful! High sharpness even at full aperture, absolutely awesome closed one or two stops. Yield of blurred delicate and very pleasant. Chromatic aberrations and distortions virtually absent. Quiet and fast autofocus, both of AF-single or AF-continuous (tested on Sony a7II). Dimensions and weight absolutely dignitose.rnIn conclusion: lens extraordinary !!! Per me it was love at first sight.
sent on 13 Marzo 2015 Pros: Sharpness Blurry Construction Cons: Cap lens cap platicoso Opinion: Use this view for a few months and I have to say, I did not believe that Sony could pull off such a good result. Even at full aperture is an impressive sharpness, further closing the aperture are obtained exceptional results, even we risk "an excessive definition" At the same time restiuisce fuzzy delicate and smooth. Good construction, compact and gives solid feel, with Hood fixed size may seem excessive, but on a7 (I use the smooth first version) I can guarantee you that there is really good, the cap lens cap is perhaps the only one who sinned feedback in his clear set, really poor and not always well established, we need to be careful when you put it and make sure it is aggangiato well. Last note, comes with soft bag x transport, particularly from non trascurare.rnIn ultimately a great lens that will give you a lot of satisfaction.

It is not as compact as other 50mm but the performance is really incredible. 50mm definitely the best I've ever had. |
