sent on 02 Febbraio 2021 Pros: Sharpness- even at long distance. Great colors. Price. Lens hood. Min. focus distance is class leading. Cons: Tripod foot. Opinion: Used this lens (Canon EF mount) for 2 years with Canon 5D markIV and Fujifilm X-T3 (Fringer Pro2 adapter) and always Sigma 4001 x 1.4 converter. Shooting from the same place and the same the objects (Northern gannets birds at about 250 meters in heavy, stormy conditions and Canon 5D IV, the picture quality very similar to other shooters using Nikon 600/4 VR and Canon 600/4 II without converters. With the X-T3 body I think there is even a slight edge in overall picture quality over Nikon 600/FL with D500 and Canons 600/4 II with 1 DX II. (cropped images) Of course there is a lot of other circumstances around. Since 20 years i always use the excellent Vinten professional Vision 10 tripod and fluid head modified and wood stiffened. Weights almost 10 kg and has even a camera body support rig included to avoid any movement or mechanical stress to lens connections.
sent on 31 Gennaio 2019 Pros: Outstanding Image Quality - Excellent Build Quality - Price, when compared to the Nikon and Canon equivalents. Cons: Tripod Foot - The tightening nut on the tripod ring occasionally jams but releases after a firm turn. Opinion: Outstanding image quality.Straight out of the box I found the lens was severely front focusing, this issue was remedied after purchasing the Sigma dock which soon sorted the problem out. The tightening nut on the tripod ring occasionally jams on my lens but releases after a firm turn. Compared to the Nikon and Canon equivalent this lens represents amazing value. Thoroughly recommend this excellent lens.
sent on 24 Agosto 2018 Pros: Build Quality. AF Speed. Color contrast. Bokeh. Sharpness. Weight is well balanced. Adjust-ability on the Sigma Dock. Price compared to the Nikon equivalent. Cons: As mentioned by others, tripod foot too short though all professional lenses whether OEM or third party should come with a sufficient arca swiss compatible tripod foot. Opinion: Have previously shot with the Nikon 500mm F4G. The Nikon is a great lens and from what I have seen, so is the Nikon 500mm F4E. So, this is not to say the Sigma is better than the Nikon versions. What I would say is the Sigma is as good from shooting and from viewing images of the Nikon versions and much cheaper than the new version of the Nikon and the same as second hand for the previous version. Time will tell if construction of the Sigma is as good as the Nikon. So far, the Sigma is a fantastic third party option to the OEM versions and the best Sigma lens I have shot with by far!
sent on 10 Ottobre 2025 Pros: Sharpness, blurry, build quality Cons: Unconvincing micro contrast Opinion: Lens that I have used for a few years and that I have been able to test thoroughly. Excellent sharpness, as well as blur. Excellent performance over long distances. Very good performance with the sigma 1.4 tc. Poor quality with 2×. Used with nikon d850 and with d 500. Overall optical performance very good in my opinion, especially smooth. Although, as already mentioned, the sharpness is excellent, in my opinion the microcontrast is not at the highest levels
sent on 28 Aprile 2024 Pros: Build quality, sharpness, contrast, stabilizer... Cons: don't have it Opinion: After using Nikon lenses of the same focal length I wanted to make a clean change and I decided to take the sigma 500mm f4 sport, I used this lens both handheld and on tripod, handheld you can use it for a while but then you will have to find the support because the weight will be felt, With my Nikon D4S the autofocus was crazy, precise and quiet, as quality was really something incredible.
sent on 11 Agosto 2022 Pros: sharpness, autofocus build quality, multiplied 1.4x Cons: nobody Opinion: L"I used with D5 and the new nikon Z9 what to say is a fantastic lens, very sharp, autofocus very fast and precise, possibility to update the fimware and customization via usb dock, with the tc 1.4x does not lose anything and the autofocus remains velocissimo.il weight is considerable but it is normal for optics of this level, only flaw but this is a defect of all brands, you have to replace the bracket for the tripod that in my opinion I find embarrassing.
sent on 20 Febbraio 2021 Pros: Construction quality, autofocus and sharpness Cons: At the moment no one Opinion: I've had this lens for about 10 days, so a real opinion at the moment is too early to give it. Used only twice, one from a mobile shed with tripod + gimbal and one out in the mountains with a free hand, certainly to be noted its sharpness, amazing. Purchased used by famous physical store, compared to the Zoom Tamron 150-600 G2 there is no comparison, especially for the same focal length... the Tamron after 500mm lost in sharpness. Certainly the freehand weight is felt, but this is a feature that is known at the time of purchase and to be budgeted. Weight however well balanced and the various features available allow you to customize it to your liking (some i probably will never need to use them). Optical qualities and construction materials from top of the range, starting from the carbon lampshed. I didn't consider the Nikon 500 FL consideration, simply because it was out of budget for my chances. I asked the store "in advance" for autofocus calibration on my D500, for safety and to avoid having to carry it out independently, so I can not tell you if /how present the f/b focus was on the lens. I will certainly update the evaluation in the coming months, once the objective has been used a few times.
sent on 20 Febbraio 2021 Pros: excellent sharpness, autofocus and build quality Cons: undetected despite my pickyness in the tests Opinion: In doubt in choosing between the 500 Fl Nikon and the 500 Sigma Sport, I was lucky enough to try them both on many occasions, finally opting for the purchase of the second telephoto lens without repentance. Almost identical in the weight and distribution of it, in view of the price-quality ratio, Sigma dominates the Nikon product and not by a little. Impeccable autofocus and very, very sensitive... Associated with 1.4x there is no decay of the image, despite my always present prejudices towards focal multipliers. Very fast in the transition from Af to manual focus, probably in the hypersonic engine of yamaki's house there is a lot and still a lot of high quality technology. The bracket allows a correct rotation on 90 degrees thanks to the presence of a retainer that can be disengaged by operating an unlocking lever (absent in Nikon). The magnesium alloy barrel is of excellent workmanship to say the least, the light screen in rigorous carbon fiber and the optical scheme includes two elements in Fld glass and one Sld (total absence of spherical and chromatic axial aberration) where fld means Fluorite, whose well-known characteristics allow a very low dispersion. The optical stabilizer with accelerometer can be used in two modes, one that allows a certain "generic photography" and a second more oriented towards bird life and sports (in this second function the algorithm used by Sigma allows to work on horizontal, vertical and diagonal axes with unthinkable results). Finally, to add that to the purchase of this magnificent product, there is in the kit a backpack that allows its transport even with mounted machine body. I think it is useless to emphasize how much the Japanese company has been able to do achieving in my opinion a quality equal if not superior to the most branded Canon and Nikon brands. Not forgetting that the latter cost twice as much...
sent on 08 Dicembre 2019 Pros: never tried Cons: never tried Opinion: Hello everyone wanted your personal opinion , tomorrow I go to test the 500 of the Sigma f/4 sports, evaluating that I now own the 200/400 F4 Nikon "evaluable x now great" however a little short x the naturalistic despite also having the 1.4. Being a Nikon fan, I feel a little restrained towards other optics. I have already realized that 1.4 Nikon nn is compatible and the bracket as you have highlighted is short , Apart from these 2 negativity, I wanted to understand about the AF customization and if it is worth the change. Thank you from the heart to those who answer me and with the occasion I wish you all happy shots ..... Fotolux (Lucio Bertani)
sent on 27 Marzo 2019 Pros: Ultra Sharp, fast and customizable AF, excellent multiplied. Cons: Maybe the stabilizer does not equal the ones more noble, but effective enough. Opinion: I had both the Nikon 500 F4 FL, and previously the Canon 500 F4 ISII. This Sigma has nothing to envy to the other two.... In fact, regarding the AF I would say a step above considering the customizations etc... Really excellent even multiplied, perhaps, but I say maybe, the 500 ISII was a sharper Pelino only DUPLICATED, but I said perhaps (and probably depends on the duplicator, as smooth and multiplied to 1.4 is really exceptional, equal to or better than the other two). They Confirm what I have written the tests carried out by the only site that I personally find reliable and consistent with what I have been able to test in the field during my years of experience. Consider that my photos are almost always very croppate....
sent on 02 Dicembre 2017 Pros: Construction ,, sharpness blurred brightness everything Cons: Nobody Opinion: After months of testing and photos, I can say I'm very happy to have bought it, because it is built very well, solid and with many features such as the ability to use the USB doc with various customizations from autofocus that works so well, I followed by subjects like the little flower or the ruler among the trees that are very fast ,, without any problem ,,, not to mention the stabilizer that works really well giving you the possibility to shoot at very low times that associated with the ,,, brightness Dell lens do yes that you can take home a shot even in bad light conditions .. I said this I confirm that it is a great alternative of excellent quality compared to 500 nikon that costs double ,,,,,, ah hhhh I forgot with the multiplier 1.4 loses a reactivity but the sharpness is the same giving you the opportunity to buy 200 mm that I think in avifauna make the difference to get closer to the subject, more work fine 810 with a bit9; crop and voila you will have excellent results ... I conclude by saying that I'm very happy to have bought it definitely worth all the money spent ,,, oh I forgot, the sigma gives you in addition a very useful backpack done very well for the goal where there is quietly also the camera body and various accessories, really cool because once I was convinced I had to spend another 200 euros for another backpack compliments Sigma ...
sent on 18 Novembre 2017 Pros: Quality of construction, sharpness, colors, blurry, lightness, AF. Cons: Brace a little short Opinion: A wonderful lens. I tried it in the sports (F1) and naturalistic (safari, mountain hunting) and gave me so much satisfaction. AF always excellent, excellent sharpness also in TA, very natural colors, creamy blur. Fully satisfied. Multiplied with 1.4 Sigma does not suffer from any quality loss, never tested with 2.0. A lens that Sigma adds to its latest excellence both in the S and Art series, since Nikonista must thank Sigma for having produced such high performance and quality, in no way second to Nikkor (in fact). Unique, physiological, I have made the micro-regulation AF for a light front-focus. Stubborn lens!
sent on 21 Maggio 2017 Pros: Lightweight fire lock on barrel carbon hood light price auto focus lightning Cons: Maybe only pedestal X stands a bit short Opinion: Fantastic an absolutely objective to have in my backpack, very clear already at F4, used with 1DX mark2 a sniper, I found particular the ability to block the AF field, using the buttons on the barrel just behind the hood, hood in Carbon light, second With a great alternative, to the most expensive original objectives that cost double .rnThank you even for free-hand use
