sent on 17 Maggio 2024 Pros: Lightness, boken and colours Cons: Very chubby size, not optimal sharpness at full aperture Opinion: Excellent portrait lens, with warm colors and pleasant boken, not very sharp at full aperture but improve considerably from 2.8 up to f 8.Very light all in all well built only drawback perhaps slightly large in diameter but all in all it is an 85 1.4 highly recommended to start with that focal length. On second-hand you are spoiled for choice if you find a copy in good condition and have it in your kit.
sent on 23 Luglio 2022 Pros: Weight quality price Cons: Not very incisive - very slow autofocus Opinion: Maybe the specimen in my possession has some problems but the autofocus seems to me very slow especially at TA with scars light. Little definition. Blurry of good level, soft and pasty, definitely not sharp and decisive. Right focal length for narrow portraits in the studio or outside. Less convincing indoors..... but I'm not an expert
sent on 26 Maggio 2022 Pros: Sharpness, AC, price, AF. Cons: Yellow dominant. Opinion: Specialized lenses, those that are rarely used unless you work in the field of expertise. Well, an 85 1.4 is a specialized lens and this is better than you can expect for anyone not specialized in the field of use, or wedding, portraiture. Even in that field we are on very high levels. I come from a 105 1.4 sold because ' precisely, it's fine the sharpness and brightness' , but carrying a large 105mm when a super tele 500mm precisely a specialty' not mine did not make sense. Never regret the gearbox, where the Samyang plays the part of the compact, always performing, for yield and autofocus. It often surprises me for the detachment, for the quality of the blurred and the absence of aberrations; probably the GM has that little extra in the blurred where he excels. EXCELLENT.
sent on 17 Settembre 2021 Pros: Price, yield, autofocus, weight Cons: Yellow dominant, lack of keys, coating Opinion: Excellent 85mm, already very sharp all open but that becomes really sharp from f / 2 onwards. The autofocus is great, fast and quiet. it is a light lens, considering the competition, even if a more voluminous hair. The quality/price ratio is at the top, it places it at the top of the market in this respect. Nice blurred. However, it brings with it some flaws: the photos have a yellow dominant, correctable in post. The lens has no key other than the manual focus ring and the painted metal barrel scratches quite easily. The hood is made of very cheap plastic, as is the cap. A bit annoying that Samyang sells separately the dck for updates (which costs 45-50€). Finally, the minimum focusing distance is 90 cm, higher than the competition.
sent on 14 Settembre 2021 Pros: Weight, Price, Autofocus Cons: Colour rendering, backlight Opinion: Budget lens that shows all its flaws when shooting against the light. Its biggest flaw, however, is related to the color rendering really far from the sigma art and sony GM series (which I use to work), the colors too warm and with magenta dominants are correctable in post, but require a waste of time that produces unacceptable slowdowns for my workflow. Definitely recommended for amateurs who do not have great pretensions, lens however light and of good workmanship. For professionals or those who want a higher quality lens I recommend the new sigma art or the Sony GM
sent on 04 Agosto 2021 Pros: Everything: Sharpness, bokeh, color rendering, no A.C., AF speed, ergonomics, aesthetics, tropicalization Cons: Don't have it Opinion: RF version: AMAZING optics. For me the ultimate portrait lens, which I would prefer to the Sony GM or Canon L even if only trivially for the value for money. Sharp to scare already at 1.4, nice soft and pasty bokeh, warm beautiful colors in pure Samyang style, lightning AF even in pursuit and video. The filter diameter 77 is very common so versatile, the dimensions are honest in relation to the opening and the same speech for the weight. Tropicalization works and allows you to bring it into adverse conditions and shoot without fear. In a nutshell, for 500/600 euros it is the perfect optics. It works well and no frills, guarantees everything that an advanced professional/amateur can and will ever REALLY need. PS: Having first owned the Samyang 85 EF, I confirm that this version is actually new and different. It has NOTHING to do with the previous one, MUCH less sharp, super invasive chromatic aberrations and slower AF.
sent on 09 Maggio 2021 Pros: all Cons: He doesn't cook you Opinion: Yet another big blow from Samyang. The lens is amazing, used for the first time in a professional way yesterday, and I can only be thrilled. Autofocus is very fast, even in eye-tracking it practically never fails. The yield is fantastic, it does not have the invasive dominant ones of samyang 50 1.4 ( which is in its own way an amazing lens anyway), it has no chromatic aberrations, the photo is exploitable in all conditions. The very light warm shades do not find them annoying or limiting. The lampshed is extremely generous in size, which makes it easy to use in backlights and the like. It also is seamlessed without games of any kind, and conveys a feeling of extreme solidity. I personally didn't notice sharp falls or anything, and I used it in a quarry in full sun. So in my opinion, slow promoted with flying colors. I do not find the vignette highlighted by other reviewers. Maybe they've received some failed specimens, or maybe they don't have the active fix, I have no idea. Perhaps the only note of "demerit" is the construction, not at the level of a Sony GM, while still having its "dignity". Much better in my opinion, however, than the "first generation" Sigma Art. The general dimensions are not contained, it is still an "old style" 85 1.4, so it does not take advantage of the possibilities of mirrorless pull. I personally consider it a miracle lens, because with 500€ or so, having access to a definitive portrait lens, is simply a miracle. I confess that I took it instead of a Sigma 105 Art, sold as objectively unsustainable to use. I do not sincerely regret the 'downgrade', as the compromises to use Sigma were not, in my view, justified by an actual advantage in terms of yield.
sent on 05 Marzo 2021 Pros: Weight, size, tropicalization, aesthetics, high level of sharpness at f1.4 that also reaches the edges, blurred, AF speed, AF silence, chromatic aberration (minimal and comparable to the EF 85 f1.4 L IS USM canon) and price Cons: low resistance to flare, but for now I have always tried it without a lens station lampshet for RF expensive 80-100€ Opinion: Today I got the LENS STATION and updated the firmware My lens had arrived last week with firmware 1.0 now has 3.0! The absurd thing is that the updated and October 2020 firmware and my lens purchased last week on offer on amazon still had 1.0 But as I hoped, based on the reviews of the various youtube channels, this update gave the turbo to this lens because it solved the 3 issues that were revealed: IBIS on R5 and R6 which now works great, H+ burst that now works and tenacity and inaccuracy in SEVO AF which is now accurate. My focus ring is soft and fluid Sharpness at 1.4 in servo is amazing if we then compare it to the price is exceptional. The vignette marked at 1.4 is solvable in post production but a sore note is the low resistance to flare that is sometimes invasive with rainbow effect (but this thing I noticed without a lampshade then one day I will do a test also with the lampshade). The cost of the base to update the firmware is a little too expensive because competitors sell it on average at 50€ Vote based on price 10 , vote based on another 85mm 9/9.5
sent on 25 Dicembre 2020 Pros: Solid metal construction, sharpness already at TA, compact and light, AF fast and precise (at least for non-extreme use such as sport and action), bokeh Cons: Evident vignetting up to f2.8, hard focus ring and little disabled, colors maybe not at the top Opinion: Purchased for about a week this one of mine is an initial review because I couldn't thoroughly test the lens in all its features. I certainly appreciated the sharpness already very good at full opening and significantly improves from f2 to f2.8 where it is practically a blade. The worst defect is perhaps the evident vignetting at f 1.4 and partially resolved to f2, however easily solvable in post production. In general it is a great lens for what it costs, very recommended unless it is considered essential stabilization After trying it on the outside I add to the above that this lens returns a sharpness, a microcontrast and a truly exceptional incisiveness even starting from f1.4, with a truly remarkable three-dimensionality and blurr. The vignetting described above, although evident by photographing a white wall, in real conditions is really little noticeable and I consider it a fairly marginal defect. For what it costs it is absolutely to buy if you are looking for a specialist portrait lens.
sent on 24 Novembre 2020 Pros: Crisp, compact (compared to the competition), fast, cheap, beautiful to see Cons: A slight yellow dominant Opinion: After more than 10,000 shots and 20 Shooting made with this lens coupled with my Sony A7III I made a complete review on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDUugHu3snY It has practically only merits if we consider the price, today it is located little and worth much more than many... It doesn't get to the quality levels of SIGMA or even the Sony Gmaster 1.4 but if you want something more than the usual 1.8 this is for you.
sent on 23 Novembre 2020 Pros: Simply amazing: bokeh, lightning AF, colors, sharpness, contrast. Overall quality. Cons: nothing to report, maybe a little clutter but you can't expect to have a featherweight. Don't miss the quality of the materials you "feel" with Sony GM... but you can't ask for everything! Opinion: What about... spend 1/3 of the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM, but in the end you don't lose anything! I have long been undecided whether to take the Samyang 85/1.4 or (at the same price or almost) the Sony 85/1.8 or jump to the 85/1.4 GM. And i finally got it after seeing a couple of reviews online.... even though I was wary. After the first half hour, I fell in love with it. It's just a show! The AF is lightning fast, allows you not to regret the GM and never misses a beat (even in the pursuit of the subject). The colours are even more pleasing than Sony lenses: slightly canon-like, just warmer and more balanced than Sony lenses. The construction is (almost) professional lens. It weighs a little but doesn't make you regret even one of the grams that weighs. Let's understand: it still weighs much less than the 85/1.4 GM, but a little more than the Sony 85/1.8. Excellent sharpness already at TA. Obviously at f/2 it increases but at 1.4 it is still excellent! I use it on the A7R III (which is demanding!) and on the A9. I'm upset about that. About the bokeh: superb! I really like it. The only thing that really wants to be picky you have to say is that it does not return that feeling of "pro" optics that you can perceive with Sony GM optics. But let's remember that it costs 1/3. In short: if you want an 85/1.4 you can think of Samyang without having doubts about the characteristics and yield. The comparison with the Sigma does not hold: IT WEIGHS AND COSTS TWICE AS MUCH! The weight of an optics is one of the things I look at: transposrability depends on it and therefore the use that can be made of it.

sent on 22 Novembre 2020 Pros: Sharpness, responsive af, warm colors, great file quality, very creamy bokeh, good minimum focus distance. Cons: For the cost no cons to highlight Opinion: Very amazed by an underrated lens, it proves professional, in portraiture offers its best side, optics that when combined with the latest generation Sony from a nice satisfaction , interesting also on apsc , the use on the a6400 for a focal equivalent to a 135 mm f 2.2 specific for portraiture or cinophile photography , less expensive choice of a 200 f2.0 on ff.
sent on 27 Ottobre 2020 Pros: Price, lightness, aberrations almost absent Cons: Construction, warm colors not always faithful always to be corrected, lampshed, sharpness under F2.0 Opinion: Unlike many to me this lens has not really convinced: Sharpness at f1.4 not exhilarating if put close to the new sigma DG DN, it is recovered only at F2.0. Large and plastic, the lampshon looks like a camping cup and has a slight play on the lens. Noisy autofocus in some situations, slower and less precise than FE 1.8 and dg DN. The most annoying thing is the shades it returns (on each photo you have to put your hand on it with the lever of yellows and oranges). Replaced with the new Sigma and there is no history.... of course it costs half you will say... only that the sigma is worth them all, the sammy is not even worth half in my opinion. If you have little budget it is better to focus on the proven Sony FE f1.8, which is less "toy" than this
sent on 08 Settembre 2019 Pros: very sharp at 1.4, gorgeous blurry (canon-like 1.2), really beautiful and warm colors, af ultrasonic, fast, precise and really quiet ! Cons: As much as it costs and what it returns, none Opinion: I've had this lens for about 4 months, what about... simply poetic, I had the sony 1.8 but I never liked it too much... this is a different story for me! the blur is wonderful, gradual and really creamy (reminds me of canon 1.2), the colors are just faithful and tend to warm (which I like very much), the autofocus is really impressive, compared to the other samyang has 2 ultrasonic engines that allow it to put to fire quickly and silently. even in the evening with low light I do not miss a beat ! for me really a superlative lens ! I use it on sony a9 and a7 and it give me great satisfaction !
sent on 27 Agosto 2019 Pros: Price quality, low weight, sharpness to f/1.4 Cons: Not perfect light points Opinion: I bought the Samyang for about a month and a half, giving back the Sigma 85 art. The focal is my favorite, in the past I had both the Sony 85 1.8 and, in fact, the Sigma. The Samyang. At the moment I used it in a wedding (on a7iii), family photos and a shoot of a family on holiday in Lucca (about a6300), you can find some photos below and in my galleries. The result has always lived up to expectations, I used it practically always between f/1.4 and f/2 without having any problems of sharpness. The af for my purposes is fast, even in poor light (always used at wide openings though). The bokeh for my taste is nice, just not perfect in the light points, which are less circular than the Sigma Art (however better than the Sony 1.8) In conclusion for my taste and need is the best 85 with FE attack, being out of budget the GM , however, I would recommend the Sony to those who do not need a 1.4 opening, since the quality is similar and the smaller footprints
sent on 26 Agosto 2019 Pros: Construction, lightness, three-dimensionality, beautiful blurred Cons: At the moment I can't find any Opinion: In relation to the price I have to say that this lens is a real surprise. On A7R3 it works which is a wonder, highly solving, sharpness at the edges excellent, eye af fast and precise, practically zero chromatic aberrations and distortions, creamy and circular blur, I really struggle to accept the sony 1.4 GM at almost three times the Price. I've had it for a few days and I can't find a real weakness. Maybe on flares does not excel, but I repeat for what it costs they did a miracle.
