| sent on 17 Dicembre 2017 Pros: Lightning fast autofocus. Sharp! Very well built. Cons: Care must be taken with busy backgrounds as the bokeh is not all that nice, the price you pay for the incredible sharpness of this lens. Opinion: After over two years of using a Canon 400/5.6 and a Metabones Smart Adapter on my Olympus E-M1 (I and II), I finally broke down and bought this lens. I was always quite happy with the image quality of the Canon, but at 73 I was getting tired of the relatively slow (but VERY accurate) AF (phase detect only) and the difficulties I was having with the Mark II with pin point focus in busy situations, like small birds in the tree branches. The 300/4 Pro is brilliant, both in build and image quality. The combined IS on the Mark II is amazing. The AF is amazing. The resolution is amazing.... in fact, I get sharper images with less CA/fringing at 420mm with the MC-14 attached than I did with the Canon at 400mm. The only slight drawback is the bokeh which tends to be a little busy, but it is manageable and well worth the gains in sharpness. In a word, I LOVE it! | sent on 05 Aprile 2016 Pros: Optical quality at the level of the best fixed; build quality; minimum distance of MAF which makes it almost a Macro; tropicalization; collapsible ring passing to MF; presence of a Function button (Fn) on the body; multiplied by 1.4 to maintain a good image quality. Collar supplied with arca swiss style. Weight. Cons: nothing Opinion: Great Lense.................................................. I am coming from CANON full frame and i'm very glad to have switched to micro 4/3. With this lense i have a 600 mm F4 with 1270 g. and a very very beautiful image quality. The stabilisation is incredible. With hands with 1/60 sec it's great. The image quality with TC1.4x is perfect. |
sent on 23 Aprile 2026 Pros: Excellent sharpness, great to use even handheld, excellent stabilization. Cons: The ring on the body to switch between AF and MF moves too easily. Opinion: Purchased used a year ago, I consider it the best M4/3 supertelephoto in terms of optical performance and also used with the 1.4 teleconverter it maintains an excellent performance. Very good even using it with the 2x. I like nature photographs taken on cloudy days or with cloudy sun for the best rendering of the colors of the animals, for this reason the Pana 100-400 in certain situations was a little too dark. In addition, on bright days, the possibility of duplicating it and having a focal length equivalent to a 1200 F/8 can be very useful. The close focus at 1.4 meters combined with the 1.4 x, allows you to photograph from a distance useful not to scare butterflies and dragonflies and to use it as a macro lens. I don't like the ring on the barrel to switch from AF to MF because it happened to me several times that the meshes of the camouflage net moved the ring to MF in important moments.
sent on 03 Febbraio 2025 Pros: Sharpness, easy handling, autofocus, overall quality, colors, contrast. Cons: Bokeh in certain situations, but it's not that relevant. Opinion: It is my first fixed super-telephoto and from the first field test you can perceive the extreme general quality, the extraordinary sharpness (already looking into the viewfinder of the camera) and responsiveness. It is addictive, exceptional results. I was worried about having less versatility being a fixed lens but every time I bring it with me some satisfactory/excellent results I bring it home, and I would never go back to 100/400.
sent on 15 Dicembre 2024 Pros: Great optics, everything Cons: Don't have it, lens hood jamming Opinion: For now the best optics combined with om-1 for micro 4/3 that I have had. It never disappoints except with heavy or very humid bad weather where it tends to knead a little but in normal conditions (even in low light) it really makes a lot, a blade in the details and a gem. I use it daily and I mistreat it and stress it in all its forms and it has never disappointed me yet... Even with the 1.4x it works great, for fast birdlife being a fixed I found that with the viewfinder as an accessory I can use it in practically all situations even the most hectic What can I say, pure love :)
sent on 11 Gennaio 2023 Pros: Quality.... Image... focus.... Cons: Lens hood... weight... don't have it.... Opinion: Amazing lens.... Give spectacular images.... For me a ... if not the most beautiful Zuiko lens.... Maybe after the new 150-400 f4.5....but to try ... So much substance... Blurred a bit strong .... hood comfortable but delicate .... I must say that I immediately fell in love with this lens Do not try it ...... otherwise....
sent on 15 Novembre 2022 Pros: Crazy quality (even at TA), tropicalized, colors, AF, programmable function key, bracket included in the price Cons: big and heavy to be an M4/3 (it's exactly as big as a 300mm f/4 from FF), really fragile hood closure system Opinion: What can I say? It is definitely not an "easy" lens, which serves in every kit, but, in its category, it does crazy things. Coupled with "generous" camera bodies (E-M1X or E-M1 with battery grip) in terms of ergonomics it seems to have a flagship FF with 600mm of focal length, but .... less than half the size! Beautiful colors (like the other Olympus PRO lenses, on the other hand), lightning-fast AF (on performing bodies, of course), robust, solid, tropicalized, with a minimum distance of MAF that makes it practically a macro (0.34x reproduction ratio, which with the crop factor of the m4 / 3 become 0.65x: practically for "large" subjects such as butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, reptiles, it replaces a macro lens without regrets!). What can I say: in terms of performance it is really a perfect lens. We come to the few cons: the dimensions are not small to be an m4/3 lens (as mentioned, it is exactly as large as a 300mm f / 4 from FF), but they are not such as to strain excessively (I am quite robust, but I tried to do several km with backpack and E-M1 III + BG + 300mm around the neck and I had no problems). It may seem like a fool, but the worst flaw of this lens is.... the hood! The closing method is really morons (three plastic teeth miiiiinuuuuscooooliiiiii, which are peeled only to look at them badly): but I say, you have at home the system of the hood of the 40-150mm f / 2.8 (a brainy thread if you do not know it, but then very comfortable and above all very stable): but you can not make one the same?! Apart from that, an amazing lens at a human price (in this era of 24-70mm at 2500€)
sent on 18 Agosto 2022 Pros: sharpness, bulk Cons: nothing to report Opinion: my specimen, is extremely sharp, and with the TC, makes better with the 2x, you do not notice the difference in comparison with the optics now, while with the 1.4x loses slightly .it suffers a bit on the medium long distances in the case of hot air ... but this I also notice with the canon 500f4 and DX2, Combined with the 1mx, it becomes a very performing and manageable set freehand in the wandering photographic hunt, has discrete capacity for close-up photo (an almost macro). The colors and contrasts are rendered very well, sometimes it reminds me of the Velvia....
sent on 06 Agosto 2022 Pros: Amazing autofocus, image quality at the highest levels, lightness, price for what it's worth, very bright, impeccable construction, tropicalized Cons: Bokeh a bit nervous, but just to find him a flaw. Opinion: I bought this lens with the new OM1 and I must say that it is a deadly pairing. The autofocus of the OM1 finally enhances this lens that with the M1Mk3 seems in some cases uncertain. It wasn't the lens, it was the body. Its brightness allows you to keep fast times without having to raise the ISO recklessly. A pleasure to use it.

sent on 12 Maggio 2021 Pros: Optical quality / relative lightness / construction Cons: The lampshed is a little Opinion: So far I'm using it with G9, but it deserves an Olympus body to make the best of it. The image quality is fantastic, superior to that of the best zooms for FF and APSC, above all it is already perfect at full opening, even with the tc 1.4x not known obvious signs of decline even at full opening (closing at f7.1 you still earn some). On G9 the minimum shooting time is 1/30, the stabilizer is not super quiet, but does not bother. It's built very well!!! The only element that distorts a little is the lampshed, which although comfortable as it can be folded directly onto the barrel, can tend to fit when it is extended. Beware of the focus ring, which also adjusts the autofocus or manual focus mechanism by going up and down (if one is not familiar with Olympus optics and if it is in the manual focus position it may think that the af does not work) It is not a normal 300 F4 for FF (such as the canon), but it is equivalent to a 600mm on FF or a 400mm on apsc, it means that over long distances it can compete with 600mm of apsc zooms. It can also benefit from the high-resolution shooting of m4/3 bodies, when possible, also useful for photographing over a very long distance. A big advantage of this 300 F4 is the very low weight, which makes it decidedly more comfortable and light to carry with you in the stray photo hunt compared to the 150-600 and even the 100-400,... you practically don't hear... With tc 1.4x instead, personally, it gives me the feeling of feeling more the weight and the footprint, nothing extreme, but I feel the difference. The blurry will not be exciting, but it is no less than the zoomons I use and I used on apsc. I absolutely recommend it (preferably used... since it doesn't cost cheap)
sent on 28 Aprile 2017 Pros: Lightness image quality super solid construction Cons: Nobody Opinion: Purchased recently, outstanding optics! Accustomed ornAl 300 500 4 2.8 and Nikon seems to have in hand a compact but with sublime quality, with m1 mark 2 made quick and precise, silent focusing. Excellent for photographic hunting combined with the 1.4 multiplier loses almost nothing and you have a 840 very high quality with a featherweight
