sent on 30 Maggio 2023 Pros: Sharp at all focal lengths, light and small Cons: 9mm distortion Opinion: It is in my opinion an exceptional lens, light as a 14-42 but of a completely different paste. Very sharp, but I did not check the edges. A quick test against a building shows a bit of residual distortion even after correction. So it's not suitable for architects, but for photos in nature it's great. For me it is extra-recommended.
sent on 14 Maggio 2023 Pros: Focal range, size, weight. Cons: Plasticaceous materials, price, absence of tropicalization, delicate. Opinion: I had it for a few years, but I never managed to please me; It looks like a kit lens of the entry level APS-C given the materials with which it is made. The sharpness is excellent in the center, but mediocre at the edges, so either you settle or you crop. It lacks tropicalization and in a lens that uses in landscaping I find it a huge flaw. I do not know if it can depend on this absence, but I read that several specimens (including mine) have presented the problem of the flat cable, making the lens usable only between 9 and 14mm, with the other focal lengths the camera body goes into error and you have to turn off and on again; The repair is not cheap, unless you are able to perform it yourself. I resold it at a price given the problem.
sent on 11 Marzo 2023 Pros: Homogeneity of sharpness; excellent colors; dimensions when closed; filter diameter 52mm Cons: Little usable from 14 to 18mm (AC and sharpness not exciting and only in the center of the frame); not suitable for night photos if not in support; optional original hood and unjustifiably expensive Opinion: I was looking for a wide-angle zoom not extreme, not bulky and with the possibility of mounting filters (circular polarizer in the first place). I relied on ePHOTOzine for the technical evaluations of this class of optics, with an eye also to the price and availability of used. The problem of all three (9mm Summilux Leica f:1.7; Panasonic 7-14 f:4 and Olympus 9-18 f:4-5,6) the lenses that could meet my needs, however, was the difficulty of having center-periphery homogeneity of sharpness. According to ePHOTOzine the relatively best performance, apart from the f/ aperture, was precisely that of the Olympus 9-18 f/4.0-5.6. It is certainly not a zoom without defects: - exploitable focal excursion (in my opinion) from 9mm to 12mm approximately, which I was still fine with because at 12mm I have no problems with focal coverage gaps, having both the Panasonic 12-60mm and the lens kit 12-32mm f / 3.5-5.6 that at 12mm and all open produces very valid images; - not particularly bright but with a good homogeneity of sharpness (which worsens from 9 to 12) between f / 5.6-8.0 and bright and pleasant colors. In the end, on RCE I found a used untouched at just over half the price of the new with 2 years warranty and for now my needs as an amateur are largely met and photographer happy with the purchase.
sent on 24 Settembre 2022 Pros: Compactness, weight, colors, sharpness Cons: Unlocking mechanism, build quality, chromatic aberrations in difficult light conditions Opinion: In my opinion it represents a very intelligent lens, since it allows you to use ultra-wide-angle focal lengths with very low weight and size. There are no such compact alternatives in the m43 world, and also in the other systems the only one similar is the Canon M 11-22. The lens is not very bright, but for outdoor use in optimal light conditions it is perfect. Optically very good, very sharp from 9 to 14 mm, then tends to lose a little side canvases. The colors are very bright and really pleasant. I find it very useful for architectural photography indoors, where it is possible to increase the shutter speed to make up for the low brightness, and where the 9 mm allow you to expand the creative possibilities out of all proportion. The lens is a bit dated and has a particularly annoying unlocking mechanism: to extend it from the resting position, in which it is very compact, to that of use it is necessary to hold down an unlock button. Same thing when you intend to bring the lens back to the resting position. To overcome the problem you can leave the lens extended all the time, but so it is a little more cumbersome and less comfortable to carry around. This mechanism is also due to the fragility of the lens, and the various unlocking cycles can lead to the breakage of the connections and the error "attention, check that the lens is correctly hooked to the camera". It happened to me, but being still under warranty I managed to replace it. Convenient manual focus ring, on Panasonic bodies the autofocus sometimes loses strokes. A good lens, of which a more updated version would be welcome, but for now it represents almost a unicum for compactness and quality in the panorama of ultra-wide-angle lenses: rating 8.
sent on 27 Marzo 2022 Pros: Compact, lightweight, razor-sharp, good color rendering Cons: Maybe not very bright, but for me it's not a problem Opinion: Purchased second-hand (practically new) two years ago, it has become my travel wide-angle zoom par excellence, almost always glued to my Olympus OM-D E-M10 mark II. Very light, sharp and almost invisible fully meets my needs for a versatile and compact wide-angle zoom, fully in the "micro 4/3" concept. The color rendering is also excellent and the thread of the standard filters (52mm) allows me to use any filter at a low price without problems. Keeping in mind that it is a wide angle low light is not a problem for me, thanks to the excellent stabilizer integrated in the Olympus bodies. For portraits or nature photography, where bokeh is important, I use other optics! If we really want to find flaws: hood absent in the package, unpleasant aesthetics and the need to unlock the zoom to use it. But they are little compared to the advantages of such a versatile lens.

sent on 10 Marzo 2022 Pros: Lightweight, sharp, tiny Cons: Maybe new is a bit expensive and the button to get it back in is uncomfortable. Opinion: If aesthetics were an important criterion in a lens I would have put it in the cons because it is really horrible. For the rest nothing to say: it is so small and light that you can also put it in your pants pocket, it is not very bright but for me it is not a problem. I use it in the mountains together with the 45-175 mm and in the city I add the 20mm f1.7 to have a bright fixed and everything is in your pocket. It is the essence of micro 4/3. I forgot: mine is an opportunity in perfect condition paid 300 euros.
sent on 30 Dicembre 2021 Pros: Small, lightweight, sharp, relatively inexpensive, 18mm equivalent, 52 filters, Cons: Not very bright, ugly, very ugly, even uglier with the hood, not tropicalized, quite plastic Opinion: It was the lens that really made me love wide-angle lenses. Many complain about the quality, my specimen has always seemed excellent to me. Before this I used the 16-35 f4 canon EF and I never missed it, especially for the weight and bulk. Of course it is not beautiful and it is not even tropicalized, but in the end used it is also relatively little and if you do not have great needs it is fine like that. If I had to choose a single lens for the m43 system I would undoubtedly choose this one (among those I tried)
sent on 06 Dicembre 2021 Pros: Good yield in proportion to the price, more than discreet in absolute, really pocket size. Cons: Construction Opinion: Taken waiting to find a used 7-14 2.8, I'm using it and I feel pretty good, on nikon I had the 12-24f4 on the right format and I find the olympus in step below as overall quality, closed from f8 up is very good, the corners also arrive, and the dimensions are really pocket-sized, I do not like the construction that gives me a sense of fragility, I recommend it to those looking for a light wide-angle zoom and at an affordable price.
sent on 11 Maggio 2021 Pros: there are still no similar optics around that in the quality/price/weight/footprint ratio, they compete with him Cons: you have to settle for an dated optics that then from various brands has been increased as performance but also as a price, size... and weight! Opinion: I make it short, read what Preben wrote that I share in full, in fact my purchase was only after reading his review ... and he believes me knows a lot! I use it relatively little but I lacked a 'large' and a real 18/36 covers everything I do.. at the bottom, remember its portableness, I with two optics go out and I can cover a range from 18 to 280 with discreet quality... and little sweat!
sent on 02 Aprile 2021 Pros: size and weight. sharpness in the middle Cons: slightly soft corners, closing/opening mechanism, flat delicacy. Opinion: to think of having an equivalent 18-36mm in 155gr and 5cm is something resounding. Yet in Olympus they have succeeded (I am not aware of any optics of this size and weight of any other manufacturer and/or system). The optics themselves are not very bright, but this is not necessary to say, just read the values, and it cannot be counted among the defects. The yield is really excellent in the center and on the sides since the maximum opening. One peculiarity is that it is very sharp on neighboring subjects while losing a thread in the focus indefinitely. Closing by 1 stop improves the overall yield, while closing more has no other improvement. The extreme angles are a little soft, especially at 18mm, but this can be there. Very few aberrations and practically no flares, even without a lampshh and also in the backlights. The distortion is perfectly correct from the software and therefore can be said almost absent. A small annoyance is that you have to "open it and close it" (it has an extension mechanism) and is therefore not immediately ready for use. The small size, combined with a rather important extension, force the inner flat of the focus to wide movements in the "strait". This in the long run causes the flat to break and the consequent repair. To remain light (in full m43 philosophy) and not sacrifice yield is a must have optics, unique and incredible. For those who want to dare more, there are 7/14 (Oly and Pana) and 8/18, but let's talk about double weights and minimum sizes.
sent on 05 Marzo 2021 Pros: Small, compact, beautiful to close Cons: When it stretches, it becomes a little "ungainly", loss of detail in the corners Opinion: Optics from my Pro point of view if it had been metal and tropicalized. Aesthetically I don't mind when it's closed, but it actually looks ugly when it opens and stretches. Opening system also this not very pleasant. Instead, I confirm the goodness of the lens from an optical point of view: crisp and with soft and pleasant colors, except in the corners where it loses detail at f4.0. On the fact that it is f4.0-5.6 I do not see it on my part as a negative aspect as in my opinion its predominant use is for daytime landscapes. It doesn't come cheap even for used, and honestly for a single stop of gain compared to more famous, expensive and much heavier wide angles, I prefer this. I also hope for a "II" version maybe in metal, tropicalized and without the opening system.
sent on 05 Giugno 2020 Pros: Compactness, af speed and above all optical quality Cons: Ugly Opinion: Small size for such a wide-angle zoom. Surprising the quality of the images produced. Light in weight and price. It deserves to be in the photo bag of every mft user. Opens quickly with unlocking. Not beautiful for the aesthetic perhaps dated, but definitely improves with the rectangular lampshade in option.
sent on 29 Aprile 2019 Pros: Focal guessed, sharpness, lightness. Cons: Construction, obsolete design. Opinion: I turned around a life because of the cost not quite accessible, but in the end I found an opportunity and I launched in the purchase. At first touch it is plasticous, and does not give the feeling of robustness that give the 14-42 II R or the 14-150 II which are also plastic them but of newer design. The design is in fact the first series of optics that date back to the dawn of the M43 system. From an optical point of view instead is a bomb: always sharp with beautiful colors: a handyman. I especially love the focal: Being an admirer of the 35mm equivalent I love that from wide angle can get to 18mm (36 eq) because it covers all my possible needs. It's not bright and if that's not a problem when you make landscapes at 9mm it's a bit more at 18mm, but you can't have the full barrel and the drunken wife. Only problem: At some point the internal flat has been damaged and I had to send it to service: 200 Euri. It burned me a little, but to date there is no other lens with the same focal and size as this in the Panorama M43 (the 8-18 pana is a bison in comparison). My dream? That they do it in version "II" like the 14-150: therefore always plastic, but with the addition of tropicalization. If they did I would change it the same day.
sent on 08 Gennaio 2018 Pros: Compact, resistance to flare, sharpness Cons: Ugly, plastic and with the release button really annoying (but it is the price to pay for a 18-35eq in 5cm), the usual lens hood sold separately Opinion: There is no doubt .. if you look compact this little Zuiko will surprise you, but you already know this just read the technical data to understand how little space they managed to put a 18-35eq, focal lengths that do not allow such small size. The defects in my view are the construction, and I wonder why they have not renewed in aesthetics as they would sell to wagon if only the barrel was PRO style. The sharpness at the edges is not exceptional especially at 9mm but not as disastrous as we read around. Having said that, let's move on to the advantages, light and compact, 52mm small and inexpensive filters, resistance to the scary flare (now I have the pana 8-18 and if the dream) sharpness in the center excellent and very beautiful colors. For those who embrace the idea of ??m4 / 3 to save weight and encumbrance, perhaps combined with some fixed on the upper focal length is definitely an excellent travel companion. Obvious considerations ... at 9mm we are at f4 and it's okay since we will often use it between f4 and f5.6 at 18mm we go to f5.6 and considering the pdc double del m4 / 3 you will almost always have everything in focus, so I suggest you combine a fixed 15/17/20/25 for when you want more brightness or less Pdc.
sent on 29 Maggio 2015 Pros: Crisp, compact and lightweight Cons: Lens hood is not supplied, the price is still a bit 'high for its category Opinion: Mounted on a light body, in my case OM-D-M5, it becomes a faithful companion of walks and cycling. Along with a mini tripod type Manfrotto PIXI, it's all in a tiny strap allowing you to walk in a relaxing, a real pleasure for lovers of landscapes or architectural photos, always with you ready to capture the moment or the particular interesting. As for the technical features I have nothing to add to the previous review. To have something more to wait the new PRO 7-14 f2.8 but, weight, size and cost of course will not be the same as this, as a compromise between quality and portability will remain unbeatable.
sent on 01 Settembre 2014 Pros: Sharpness, color rendering, no vignetting, AF speed, weight, compactness, portability. Cons: No hood, slight chromatic aberration. Opinion: The first thing that strikes those who buy this lens is its compactness and light weight: 155 grams and 5 cm in length for an ultrawide corresponding to a 18-36 on FF. It 'so compact and lightweight that Photozone him as "a masterpiece of engineering." Compared to the Panasonic 7-14, another good lens, it is much smaller and less expensive, but pays 2mm side wide.rnLa second thing that strikes you is its optical quality: a 9mm maximum sharpness is practically already at room temperature and, as there is a slight drop in the extreme edges of the frame, the lens is very sharp (certainly more than the Sigma 10-20 and the Canon 17-40 I had). Excellent color rendering, typically Olympus. A 9mm, the distortion is corrected by software from your machine which is smaller than the focal used: already by 14 mm and is virtually non-existent. rnBuona resistance to flare, although it is better to have hood: with light sources extremely side canin fact present, while the lens holds up better light sources more central. Almost absent vignetting, although under certain conditions it may be noted in areas of high contrast a slight chromatic aberration that you can easily correct in PP. The lens, while stretching in its focal, does not rotate, and thus makes easy the use of filters. The AF is quick and accurate. RNLA construction, polycarbonate, is dignified. In short, a zoom that covers you with good quality the wide side of your system m4 / 3.rnNota sore: the absence of the hood which is purchased separately (there are still similar quality also not original). rnComplessivamente, therefore, a good glass: if you want something more like IQ you must contact Panasonic 7-14 (f4 fixed) or the next 7-14 2.8 Pro Olympus. But you have to push the purse strings.
