sent on 05 Maggio 2026 Pros: Unique sharpness, colors, autofocus Cons: Price and weight Opinion: I have had the opportunity to use the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S in different situations, and the feeling, from the first shots, is that of having something profoundly different from the classic "fifty" in my hands. Here Nikon has not sought compromise: it has built a lens that openly aims for absolute excellence. From a construction point of view, the lens conveys solidity and precision. It's important, heavy, almost "dense" in perception, but never unbalanced on a high-end Z body. Every control is smooth, well-calibrated, and the addition of the OLED display and customizable controls makes for a modern and concrete operating experience in the field. The optical performance is, simply, extraordinary. At full aperture, f/1.2, I expected a certain softness typical of many super bright lenses, but the sharpness in the center is already very high, with a microcontrast that returns an impressive amount of detail. Closing even just at f1.8 you enter almost "clinical" territory, with a uniformity on the frame that I have rarely seen on a 50 mm. What is really striking, however, is the rendering of the image as a whole. The colors are full but natural, without ever being forced. Tonal transitions, especially on skin tones, are soft and believable. It is that quality that is difficult to quantify but immediately recognizable: the images have depth, three-dimensionality, presence. Bokeh deserves a separate discussion. It is not only soft: it is progressive, enveloping, almost "material". The transition between focus and out of focus is gradual, without abrupt cuts, and contributes decisively to isolating the subject while maintaining a visual coherence of the background. It is an elegant blur, never artificial. The autofocus performs flawlessly even at f/1.2, where the depth of field is extremely shallow. It is precise, quiet, reliable characteristics that are fundamental not only for photography, but also for video. Of course, it is not a lens for everyone. Size and weight are important, and the price unambiguously places it in the professional range. But it would be unfair to evaluate it with the parameters of a "standard" 50 mm: this is a product designed for those looking for the best, without compromise. Ultimately, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S isn't just an excellent lens: it's a lens that changes the way you photograph. It invites you to work wide open, to use light creatively, to look for images with character. And it is precisely in this that he finds his true strength.
sent on 10 Novembre 2024 Pros: Solid construction, right and consistent sharpness on all apertures, fast and precise autofocus, correct skin tones. It makes the machine stackable on a medium format. Cons: I don't need the screen on the barrel Opinion: I hear many people talking negatively about this lens, saying that it costs too much for what it is and that the 1.8 is pretty much the same thing. If you don't understand the meaning of this lens, don't buy it. This is very true. It makes sense in reality... Three-dimensionality, backlight management, autofocus response, realistic skin tones, magical boke, professional solidity, impressive sharpness at 1.2 minimum distance, practically the camera becomes a medium format, it makes more sense used on sensors with many megapixels to be able to make the most of the sharpness at full aperture it has, etc. Mounted on Z6 it is very unbalanced. It should be used on Z9 to have perfect balance.
sent on 31 Luglio 2024 Pros: TA sharpness, blurry, microcontrast, great AF Cons: too long, lens that is not easily cleaned, materials used Opinion: Hi, as in all my reviews I make years of use go by before opening my mouth, I don't like to review products after a month of use. I have currently owned the lens in question for exactly 3 years, and I can say that I have used it intensively. Optically you can't say anything about it, it has a sharpness of 1.2 unthinkable until a few years ago in reflex systems. It has a scary blur and a very high micro-contrast. The lens has a tendency to cool colors. I don't really like the material with which Z lenses are produced today, I much preferred those of reflex cameras (they were easier to clean and were much more resistant to scratches). I also noticed that particularly in this lens I find it more difficult to clean the glass with the microfiber cloth, while on other lenses the transition seems more fluid, here it seems slightly more complex, have they used different lenses on the outside?! I don't know. The af is very very good. Essential optics. A very sore point, not the weight but rather the LENGTHAA... really too long to be a 50mm
sent on 25 Gennaio 2024 Pros: It is the sum of optical knowledge as far as focal knowledge is concerned Cons: Nothing, knowing what you want Opinion: - It is bulkier than a Z 24-70 f 2.8 and weighs more than a kilo, so it is not suitable for cans, to balance it you have to mount it on a Z9. It's a fixed camera, you can forget the versatility of a zoom. The very low DOF at maximum aperture forces you to take a sniper course. It costs a lot of money (even if it's worth it all), but if you love the classic focal length that a "normal" returns, if you love high optics and precision mechanics, if you love shooting in low light situations, if you are looking for the difficult balance between high sharpness and a moving bokeh, if you don't need it for work but only to give vent to your high self-esteem and/or your talent, Well, then the 50mm f1.2 is definitely the lens for you. A lens for the mentally ill like myself. Finally, I had the opportunity to compare it exhaustively with the old 50mm f1.2 AIs and I must say that it was a real bloodbath, the 40 years that elapse between the design of the two lenses can be felt by everyone! The Z always gratifies you and with all apertures, the AIs definitely don't. Let's not talk about resolution, the Z in my opinion reaches and passes 100 p/mm lines. And, strangely enough, at TA the depth of field of Z measured on graph paper at 45° is always and punctually greater than that of AIs. Mysteries of optics! Only one contraindication: once you have acquired this splendid objective you will find a battalion of monkeys on your shoulders that will suggest you to sell out to buy your little cousin, the 85 f 1.2. Of course, I gave in and, indeed, I am looking forward to the upcoming 24th or 28th, always f 1.2! But that's another story...
sent on 03 Ottobre 2022 Pros: Bokeh monstrous, colors, three-dimensionality, construction, AF Cons: Large, heavy, expensive Opinion: Like the other owners, I can only talk about it well, it is a monstrous optics the colors that returns, the bokeh at 1.2 make you forget the weight and size. It is certainly not a lens to take on a trip, or rather at most to combine with another lens beyond your back suffers. As cons precisely, dimensions and weight are very limiting at times and remains at home preferring 2.8 zoom. But if you want the highest quality and maximum aperture this lens is from another planet.
sent on 12 Agosto 2022 Pros: Sharpness at f/1.2 scary! Bokeh, Three-dimensionality, AF speed and precision, Colors, Excellent flare resistance, Zero aberrations, Zero distortions Cons: Dimensions and weight Opinion: Excellent optics! I don't know how to define it otherwise... The only negative points are obviously the weight and size and... before buying it, as a negative point I also considered the price, very high. But just take a few pictures to fall in love blindly. It is not an optics to take on vacation or do street etc. it is designed for professional use and I know that from every photo I take I will have the best. I have been using it for six months now for weddings, portraits and reportages and I can tell you that it is worth every penny invested. The 50mm focal length I particularly like very much and in combination with the 24-70mm f/2.8 allow me to take home almost any type of work. I come from a Sigma ART kit of which quality I have loved for years but now that I have made the transition I can admit that here we are on another planet.
sent on 29 Luglio 2022 Pros: all Cons: costs a bang Opinion: The perfect optics. Beautiful, imposing, superb construction. Despite this still manageable and balanced: on Z6II with original BG it is a solid and portable whole. The sharpness at full aperture is incredible, as well as the speed and precision of the focus. And then the magic... As for detachment and three-dimensionality' has practically no rivals to this focal. Perfect flare resistance and creamy and very pleasant bokeh, even with distant subjects. Maybe Nikon took thirty years to make a 50 1.2 AF, but now that it has done so it has silenced everyone else. Perhaps the best Nikon lens ever produced. Of course it costs, but it's not a Mitakon... I dare not imagine what he can do in the hands of a true marriage and expert portraitist!
sent on 30 Marzo 2022 Pros: Sharpness, blurry, construction, IQ Cons: Weight, size and cost (but it's worth them) Opinion: A controversial lens, in the sense that it has a crazy quality even at f 1.2, quality directly proportional to the size with really crazy optical performance. That said, I must say that it returns pure magic, shots with great personality and characterization with a sharpness at full aperture really surprising. I also own the 50 z f1.8, excellent and much cheaper and more portable but that can not be compared to the yield of this one 1.2 ; as said by others it is a lens "out of mind", in everything . In low light this lens behaves beautifully, the bokeh is creamy and progressive, fast autofocus. It is not an everyday lens or occasional street, but if you have in mind particular projects this optics certainly helps to realize them. Is it worth buying? It's a very subjective evaluation, the cost and the weight towards the little brother 1.8 are coniderevoli, but when you shoot at 1.2 you forget that maybe you were crazy to spend that amount for a "50ino". I have also used a sigma art 50 1.4 in the past, but here we are on another planet
sent on 12 Giugno 2021 Pros: all Cons: Just the weight. Opinion: Taken and tried on 24/70 2.8 Z I got the instant desire to monetize the 70/200FL to convert it to the Z version, thanks to the cash discount of 200€. But, having experienced the high iso seal of the z6II, I wondered if it is not worth waiting for a 70/200 f4, more for a matter of footprint than weight. And so I let myself be "screwed" by this 50 1.2... what do I think after about fifty shots? I think it's a lens that freaks you out. Already being able to use it at the maximum opening, with eye detection, finding out-of-focus only because you go below the minimum distance of maf would justify its purchase. For 24/70 2.8 Z I sold the 50 Sigma Art, to blame for its blurry and the yield in high lights. I am not a great technician but I felt too different from my other lenses, which are all Nikon; so when I decided in favor of this 50 and not for the 70/200 almost I almost felt like a pirla spending a lot of money after just giving up a 1.4 more than good. All this speech valid until the first shot with a 50 1.2S mounted. After that first shot, of these lines, you'll only see that "freak out"
