Pros: Very precise autofocus, better than my Nikon Z6, small weight and size

Cons: Reliability and battery life, non-integrated stabilization, no viewfinder and only one memory slot, iso noise and cheap plastic

Opinion: Given that, at the time of purchase, I was aware of any shortcomings and / or problems of the camera, I decided to add it to my kit, which already includes the Nikon Z6 and the D750. The idea was to extend the life of both machines by "lightening" them by some shots. I've also had two other DX cameras in the past, so I've been shooting with Nikon for about 16 years and it's always been my only brand. I also own a Nikon J1, whose lens unfortunately no longer works. Initially I had thought of buying the FT1 ring, but given the conditions: high price (229 € new, about 150 € used), out of production for years and inferior quality of the camera, I decided to go for the Z30. I shoot mainly portraits. Pros: Very precise autofocus, even better than my Z6; Reduced weight and size. Cons: Battery: initially, after about 60 photos, it was 1/3 discharged; After another 30 shots, only 1/3 remained. Subsequently, however, I managed to complete a shooting of over 400 shots without completely depleting the battery. The duration, therefore, did not entirely convince me. Lack of stabilization: for a camera also designed for vlogging, it is a limitation, especially if you do not use a tripod. ISO noise. The absence of the viewfinder: it can make it difficult to shoot quickly in situations such as street photography; An accessory sight on the hot shoe would have made a difference, but so far it has not been produced. Only one memory slot. DX sensor with fewer pixels than the Z6 and D750: I expected a little more detail in the files. Materials: plastic appears cheap to the touch; Chargers are missing in the box and case for the lens. For the original launch price (even if I paid 499 € with Nital warranty and kit with Nikon Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR, which I will probably use as a paperweight) I expected a little more. By comparison, the entry-level D3xxx series SLRs cost less. In my lens park there is the Nikon AF-S 105mm f/1.4 E ED, paid four times as much for this mirrorless: surprisingly, it weighed less for me to spend on that lens than the Z30. As they say, the doctor didn't order it from me, but I explained why I added a third camera body going for the less expensive one. If it hadn't been for the purchase price, the rating would be even lower. This review, like the others, is the result exclusively of my way of approaching photography, which is different in each of us. On Instagram: ALEX_PREMOLI you can find the photos I take, if you have any questions you can contact me there. Rating: 6-

Pros: Lightness and very small size, especially with certain optics; sensor with excellent dynamic range and good chrominance noise control; remarkable autofocus for the price range; availability of good and bargain-priced lenses; widely customizable controls as per Nikon tradition. Possibility of charging from the USB socket.

Cons: Dubious tropicalization, construction with discreet materials but nothing more. Above-average luminance (grain) noise comes out already at iso 400-800. Reception problems with the wifi network. Low battery (300 shots on average) and with fluctuating indications of the power reserve.

Opinion: Really small and light machine, discreet construction but the rubber parts and buttons do not give the idea of being rigorous in the seal. I do not recommend exposing it to anything more than a few sketches. The absence of the electronic viewfinder, as well as the absence of stabilization on the sensor, are negligible: the price of the camera and its design address do not make them mandatory elements. However, some multifocal lenses, such as the kit one, have a stabilizer that works quite well (3-4 stops). I don't make videos so I'll only talk about the photographic aspect and only about RAW. The sensor has strengths and weaknesses. The chromatic noise is well controlled, while the luminance noise already starts from medium-low ISO, it is quite invasive, not helped in this by a not exaggerated resolution that amplifies the perception. It is true that with NR algorithms with artificial intelligence nowadays photos are improved a lot, but the defect remains, I am a little disappointed on this side. On the other hand, it is excellent as far as dynamic range is concerned: 13.4-13.9 stops at 100 iso, depending on the online sites that have analyzed the sensor, and holds better than average even at high isos; These are not just cold numbers, it is also noticeable by eye. This camera, however, also has very wide open third-party prime lenses, very cheap but good, able to make you shoot in low light without stressing the sensor. Also worth mentioning is a good focus peaking, which allows you to focus quite well even with lenses without AF once you get the hang of it a bit. The autofocus is very good and responsive, although not lightning-fast in low light, but we are above the level you would expect for a camera of this range. The 11 shots per second of maximum burst are more than enough, which allow you to obtain good results when chasing fast-moving objects or animals also thanks to the precise AF. But of course its scene of choice for photos is the street, where the use of the articulated screen makes you more anonymous than if you were aiming through the EVF. It is a machine, ultimately, not free from defects but certainly excellent in relation to the expense of having it; apt for those who are starting to venture beyond the smartphone but it remains a good choice also for the advanced amateur who wants to be able to shoot decently even with a little thing that can be kept in the pocket of the jacket, or who wants a cheap second body to accompany the "serious" camera and with which to share the lenses, especially the zooms that acquire a magnification factor of 1.5 x compared to the FF. Of course, if you want to make landscapes to print like posters, the 20 megapixels will be a bit tight but for all other genres it's fine, with some qualitative compromises due to the evident grain. Practically it is a small monster, it must be known how to treat and know to get the best out of it but with bright lenses it becomes a very interesting combo. It has a fast and precise AF, a good burst, and with the right optics, for example a 24mm or a 35mm with a large aperture, it has its say and spending very little money. With very open lenses it compensates for the lack of IDIS allowing you to shoot with fast shutter speeds while keeping the ISO low. You get used to the absence of the viewfinder quite quickly, the rotatable touch screen works well and is bright. A recommendation: if you want to have a day full of shots, equip yourself with a second battery or a power bank.

Pros: Size, weight, sensor, swivel and touch screen

Cons: Dynamic range and noise over ISO 1000

Opinion: Purchased at the end of 2024 for mine photographs, tired of carrying the d750 with a tamron 15/30 and a larger and heavier tripod, I think it was the right choice mainly for 3 reasons. 1. I have reduced the kit from a backpack to a handbag and, having already a backpack with ropes, harness, food, lights, etc., I am much freer and lighter. When you carry a backpack for 8 hours, even 2kg makes a difference. 2. I take 99% of the photos on a tripod, in Live View, at 100/200 ISO. The lack of the viewfinder is not a problem, indeed one less thing that protrudes. it does not have stabilization. it doesn't matter, I should deactivate it anyway. I combined it with a Laowa 9mm 2.8 manual, which I use at F8 on infinity. from 50cm everything is in focus. 3. The touch menu is very convenient and the articulated screen allows me to frame even without being behind the camera. PROS: cost, size, weight, sensor and overall quality CONS: it suffers a bit from shadow recovery and at high iso it grains a thread (compared to the d750) Would I buy it again? certainly for my use. Among other things, the battery lasts as long, if not longer, than the d750 (using only live view on the latter) The shortcomings that everyone talks about are things that you already know before buying. If one wants the viewfinder, he goes for the z50, if he wants the stabilizer on Sony. And if you want a wedding machine, you can make a nice Z8 for 8 times the cost of this one. If one spends 500 euros, he can claim for 500 euros, not for 5 thousand. If not, there are also smartphones, which are much more comfortable..... and they even phone!

Pros: Small, lightweight, instant AF, Grip, fully posable display

Cons: A few more megapixels would have been perfect, battery cost

Opinion: I took this small apsc to be able to carry it with me every day and combined with the 26mm nikon z, it becomes really pocket-sized. The responsiveness of the autofocus is impressive, The absence of a viewfinder is not a defect as it is perfect for the street and for those who review complaining about the lack of it, they probably had to take the 50. I haven't tested the battery life well yet but the cost of the original is too high in my opinion. Maybe if there had been a few more megapixels, the panoramas would have been more defined but in the end I have two FFs for portraits and panoramas, this is a blast and with a wrist strap it's perfect. The cost? Well, I can't say but surely its peers of other brands do not cost less, on the contrary.

Pros: I like it for the size and weight contained in a solid and well-built body. Excellent grip but must be helped with a dedicated accessory. Good level of customization. Usable and intuitive menu. Operating speed. Quality of jpg files (I use it mainly in jpg) and excellent iso tightness.

Cons: Maybe the battery but with a couple it solves. The side cover of the doors is made of rubber and seems thin to me, over time I fear it will remain in my hand. The front ring is too deep in the body and is difficult to turn easily (or perhaps it is designed for this reason?). Anything else honestly doesn't come to mind.

Opinion: I wanted to reset and so I gave away Fujifilm and went back to Nikon, the last time I used the brand I had a D750. I immediately found myself at home with a well-organized and easy-to-understand menu. Z30 is a surprise, I chose it for the cost (it is the first step of the Nikon Z evolutionary ladder) and for the shape (without viewfinder) for a "family" use and pure amusement so what I write must be framed in this context. Kit socket with 50-250 and 16-50. All this plastic has a great quality both in terms of construction and files (I printed 40x60 an image at 5000 iso and it doesn't crease). It can also be used with one hand, the thumb focuses and the index finger clicks as long as you mount the smallrig (I put the 3857 only plate) otherwise the little finger goes for a walk and the stability is also affected it makes it a little heavier which does not hurt. I took the power supply and 1 battery apart. The absence of the viewfinder is initially felt using the telephoto lens, it is natural to bring it closer to the eye, the support of the face is missing but it is a matter of getting the hang of it, the stabilization of the lenses helps. It is enjoyable both by setting some parameters in the car for example the iso but also completely in manual with 50s lenses, the "Urth" M42 adapter is very well done, it seems to be one with the lens and not an additional body. Over the years I have always tried to take well-made material, metal and glass (see Fujifilm), convinced that quality also depended on this and why not also for pure enjoyment in hearing the click of the ring mechanisms, the smell of fake leather and the cold of the metal bodies. Using the Z30 and plastic kit you lose the romanticism linked to the materials as with many new generation products and then why Z30? I saw a sort of "review" on YouTube, father and son, unpacking the Z30 50-250 16-50 kit with skyrocketing enthusiasm, contagious, imagining trips everywhere. I felt a certain envy in seeing the joy they released, the same I felt at the beginning with the first reflex used (Praktica BC1). I wanted to relive those feelings, disconnected from everything, almost unaware. I learned that some things don't add up and that the Z30 is a great car.

Pros: Portability, high-performance sensor, excellent autofocus, can be used with any lens with great satisfaction

Cons: Nothing knowing that if you buy it it doesn't have a viewfinder

Opinion: This handy little camera surprised me, it has great quality and a myriad of programmable features. I used it for a while in different situations and it did not disappoint... I come as a use from many more pro but older Nikon cameras and I must admit that technology has gone a long way on some aspects... Especially AF speed. This little one made me fall in love and I want to take it everywhere where I need lightness without losing quality, among other things the crop factor of 1.5 of the APS format in macro is very useful. I leave the classification of entry level and suitable for bloggers, to those who do not know what to do with photography or chase labels.

Pros: size, weight and unbeatable value for money

Cons: ISO tightness but with APSC you can't expect too much, lack of viewfinder

Opinion: I bought this ML to do birdlife with ground camera and it did not disappoint. Everyone advised me against it at the beginning, those who didn't try it, as always, then reading a review by a competent person and an old photographer like me I decided. I found an offer on prime day and I took it home for very little (Kit) compared to what this small mirrorless can give, simply perfect and with jpg ready immediately. My galleries speak for themselves, I've had D800 and D500 and never missed them. With avifauna on the pose sometimes the viewfinder would be useful but it is not a problem since I mainly use it in darkened environments for camouflage. Because of this lack it is not recommended in wandering hunting and outdoors of course, as a perfect hide. Like all nikon mls, it works very well with its Z lenses, even if I adapted it with an old 400 2.8. With adapter the fire is not always perfect while becoming a sniper with native z. You will have to get used to the idea that the future will be on native z lenses, the beautiful afd and afs will remain a nice memory to use with reflex cameras.

Pros: Practicality with few limits

Cons: NN

Opinion: Definitively returned to Nikon DSLR after a love-hate story ended badly with ML camera of a famous APS-C brand, for the needs of portability in holiday or Sunday raids, I decided to buy this device, aware of its physical limitations. Excellent AF features, eye recognition, people recognition, trouble-free tracking and finally responsive display. On the quality of the files and the resistance to noise at high sensitivities, as a professional accustomed to D5 that does not bend up to impossible iso, perhaps a bit noisy from 1600-2000 iso, but more than acceptable for the type of use. Body and optics kit fantastic combination, I thought it was lighter and more fragile, but it is nice and substantial. The menus, as a Nikon user since always (we are talking about the 80s film) have not changed substantially but, like all entry level cameras, some settings are to be found in the menus and are not relegated to physical buttons as on D5, but we are talking about another planet. Also the video side is absolutely not bad for the use for which it is designed. Final grade: a nice well-deserved 9.

Pros: Ergonomics, lightness, compactness, articulated screen, button position, menu, display, charging via USB-C while in use

Cons: Lack of viewfinder

Opinion: I've been using the z50 for almost a year but it didn't convince me and so I took the z30, I have to say that there are small improvements that make you appreciate it a lot, such as the addition of various functions more than the z50 on the menu. The display in my opinion is better, slightly longer battery life, the "display" and "+/-" keys are better placed on the z30 and easier to use even in winter with gloves. If they had put the viewfinder on it would have been perfect. Rated 9!

Pros: File quality, light weight, autofocus, ISO tightness, responsiveness and battery life more than enough

Cons: You have to commit to finding a fault, the articulated display I found practical even in bright conditions

Opinion: He left for a trip to Madrid with Z30+16-50 and Ricoh GRIII, leaving home (thinking he was wrong) the Z6+24-70. But I wanted to leave light, since it was August 12th and the destination was not among the coolest areas of the planet ... During the first day I used it, under the scorching sun, turning it on only when I decided to shoot for fear that a single battery would not last me all day. In the evening, needless to say, I still had all the notches available... So the following days I used it without thinking about the battery and in the evening I never arrived with the battery empty, indeed I always saw all the notches, compared to about 150-200 daily shots. More than enough battery if you have the possibility to charge it at night. The real "surprise", however, came when I imported photos into Lightroom, just a few tweaks to brightness and exposure to make them perfect and this feeling had never happened to me, neither with Z6, nor with Ricoh GRIII, nor with D810 / 700 ... ISO hold also promoted, maintains an excellent detail even at 4000 ISO, more on I have not yet happened to have to shoot and with modern software miracles are done. 20mpx seems few by today's standards, but they are more than adequate for printing souvenir photos / paintings or publishing on social media. It also allows fast and smooth processing on mid-range PCs (Macbook PRO 13" 2017 with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 and 8GB RAM). Autofocus absolutely comparable to that of Z6, in amateur use there are no differences ... The face/eye recognition works very well and during the trip I never encountered cases of out-of-focus photos. The responsiveness is another of the points in favor, compared to a Sony 6100 (replaced for this Z30) there is no story, as soon as it is turned on it is ready to shoot, without hesitation. Finally, but perhaps the very characteristic that makes you lean towards this machine, the lightness.... Kept around your neck under the August sun you almost forgot you had it. Among all the purchases (many, too many) of photographic material, this is the one that gave me the most satisfaction and that absolutely does not make me weigh to leave other more "professional" cameras at home. The viewfinder, at least for me, could remove it on all mirrorless, so I can not indicate its lack as a defect. Video part..... ah does that too?? Vote 10.

Pros: Q/p ratio - portability for outdoor and trekking, easy handling, ergonomics, ease of use, very simple file sharing via ad hoc wi-fi with dedicated app; Nikon quality... Also for accessories

Cons: display that is difficult to read in strong daylight conditions; no viewfinder; battery life (about 200-300 shots).

Opinion: After years of hiatus from photography for various reasons (I already had a Nikon D300 and a Nikon 1 J5) last November for my birthday I decided to get a new ML, to better capture my outdoor adventures, especially in the mountains. In fact, I was tired of limiting myself to the usual smartphone photos that look good on small screens but then ... Not wanting to risk bringing too heavy and expensive equipment, I opted for the new entry (at the time) Z30 with the kit of 2 lenses 16-50 and 50-250. Super good choice in terms of portability (I then opted for a quick-release shoulder strap set) and the quality of the photography. I then used it for sports photography and for musical events, for urban landscapes, streets, monuments, motoring events (a thousand miles), public events (Alpine parade, patron saint fair), always with great satisfaction for the rendering of colors and the definition of details even though it is not a FF. Limitations: outdoors in case of strong light (for example at the sea) it is very difficult to see what is framed in the display: in that case perhaps a small viewfinder like on the Sony 6000 series would help. The standard battery does not have much autonomy: depending on the conditions from 250 to 300 shots depending on the use of the display and any videos... So I bought a second battery (strictly original) to keep in my bag. The package lacks the external wall charger: without it, to charge you have to connect the machine to a socket using a special cable supplied with the battery in the compartment, which prevents you from using the machine unless you use a powerbank; At least there is a free memory card. The gust is very effective as I have been able to experience in sports (rugby). With the firmware update last May, the software also improved in the video.

Pros: Vlog, Responsiveness, Sharpness, Overall Quality

Cons: Lack of Viewfinder, optics, exposure

Opinion: I tested it for some videos for my youtube channel Delio Vernacchia. The excellent gimmick made especially for vlogs, however, we must adapt the right optics to fully exploit the considerable potential offered and the kit optics do not fully succeed in this intent also because this machine is very sensitive to the change of light and if the lens is not good the exposure may not be very correct, for a vlogher this thing should not be underestimated. In the end, spending something more, you will find optics like the 28-75 that look good. Obviously I am aware that it is not a professional camera, but for videos yes if known well. Perfect for youtube precisely because the files were made on purpose while the video cameras of the phone have a quality that youtube does not always show correctly. The found it excellent also with regard to the landscape photographic side and not only despite being an APS-C the truly optimal photographic quality even better than the Z6. What about a nice 9/10!
