Pros: Image quality, works very well with TC's, fast AF, can be used in all sorts of photography

Cons: none

Opinion: Have been working with this lens for some time. It is one of the best I ever used, period. I do not mind the weight and use the lens (often with TC 1.4 or TC 2.0) handheld most of the times. I rarely use VR so I can not comment on that too much. For me it works well enough in situations I need VR. This Nikkor 300mm and my Sigma 500mm prime are always in my backpack with either the Nikon D4 or Nikon D500. The lens performs great on both camera's but needed a bit of calibration when TC's are attached. Overall, I'm very content with this lens. Besides the IQ I like the fact that I can use the lens as either a 300mm, a 420mm (with TC 1.4) or as a 600mm (with TC 2.0 III). I do almost not see any degradation in quality when using a TC (when properly fine-tuned/calibrated).

Pros: all

Cons: nothing maybe the vr and spare parts.

Opinion: I used this lens for two years and I can confirm that despite being a "lens out of production many years ago has nothing to envy to recent optics, the merits are above all in the speed of the autofocus and in the sharpness both smooth and multiplied 1.4 or 1.7 does not lose anything, never tried with the 2x.prova on the Z9 works great perhaps better than on the reflex.se we want to be picky the vr is not up to the height of the vr2 but it is normal that it is so.last thing that must be taken into account is that spare parts begin to be scarce.

Pros: Lightning fast and precise AF also with the Z system, excellent quality although perhaps improveable, maximum opening perfectly exploitable, useful stabilizer but that suffers from age, well balanced, holds the multipliers excellently. impeccable construction.

Cons: Weight

Opinion: Taken to replace the 200-500 f/5.6E VR. Superior sharpness, embarrassingly faster and more precise AF, especially on the Z (Z6II) system, two more stops are really convenient at 300mm. With 2X it is less brilliant than 200-500mm at 500mm, but it is still perfectly acceptable. The zoom wins for the stabilizer, but for everything else the 300 is better. I find it even more versatile, from portrait to sports, passing through a bit of naturalistic and astrophotography. The weight is felt at the end of the day but the shots offer an enviable clarity. Good with multipliers, especially with 1.4X, but also with the TC-20E III performance is valid. Old generation stabilizer, but still effective, although not comparable with new ones. I would have expected a better behavior than the stabilizer in combination with the Z6 II, thinking it would take advantage of stabilization on the mirrorless sensor, but instead there are practically no differences from using it with a reflex. Impeccable construction, really velvety Bokeh and excellent three-dimensionality.

Pros: Well balanced weight nonostane the bulk, of 2900 Grams, extreme speed when used on FF but also on aps, well multiplied with excellent results up to the Tc-1.7x, but does not disfigure even with the 2x, impeccable construction like all professional Nikons, tank.

Cons: It does not seem as sharp as the VRII successor, a little less, but always excellent, small pulse in size and difficult to manage with gloves and moffole in winter, weight perhaps a little too high, given also the canon peer who weighs 500 Gr less.

Opinion: I owned it for 10 years, bought it to make naturalistic on aps (D300, D500), and realized that the focal point was small, I flanked it with a 600 F4. It remains the fastest in my family's way of seeing, it impresses how little it takes to reach the subject with fire, the change of plans on the fire is at lightning, incredible and the speed it reaches on the professional, even multiplied 2x. It remains a lens to have, below, to multiply, if you are in possession of long important (500/600 F4), to do a little bit of everything, talk about naturalistca, in sport it is a must have together with the 400 F2.8 of all versions. A lens that once tried is addictive and that makes you forget the weight and price (especially if Nital). Recommended in any version, it is a lens that represents the excellence of the Nikon lineup over time.

Pros: Bright crisp and rendered colors typical of the historic Nikkor optics, well-built, rugged, beautiful bokeh! !.

Cons: It is heavy, even if you are aware given the professional carat of the optics.

Opinion: Purchased a gorgeous used to make indoor sports photos, perfect focal length for my needs, does not disappoint expectations, well balanced on D3s is superb, sufficiently sharp even at full aperture, AF fast and accurate, as far as The stabilization of the images, shooting with times of 1/320 or less light permitting, with sturdy and duty lacquered the VR remains always off. Also the same stabilizer limits in the burst. Freehand instead I made shots posed with the VR, succeeding to have surprisingly long times without problems, even 1/50....

Pros: All those already described by colleagues.

Cons: VR improvable

Opinion: In the special section I described my experience with AFS previous version VR. Here I write some of the VR version notes, which I then had. In AFS page I do not spread on the VR resolution at full aperture to slightly above the center of the old version, compared with an equivalent contrast. I then wrote that this VR version weighs slightly less than the non-VR, but it is much better pivoting freehand both for the different conformation of the bracket to stand, for both the distribution of unbalanced weights less towards the end. As for the general merits, I can only adhere to the ratings colleagues remarkable sharpness, bokeh intriguing, superb construction and weather sealing. The presence of the treatment to nanocrystals (a layer of silver crystals often a millionth of a millimeter) the warn in a slightly greater tonal contrast in backlit situations also not total, but still "difficult". About the effectiveness of the VR first manner, I situate my personal safety limit around 1/100 of a second, with peaks of1/50. Sure others will do better, but Nikon says that the VR II version has improved in this respect (and now adheres to CIPA measurements, for that finding, for the VR II, 3 gain stop).

Pros: Bright, crisp fearfully, weight still well manageable freehand, excellent yield with vati Tc

Cons: the only cons that I found is that, at least in Italy, for bird life is short and needs to be almost always combined with a Tc.

Opinion: A truly fabulous goal, smooth has nothing to envy anyone, even at f2.8 is always a blade. For birdlife 300mm unfortunately they are few in Italy (99% of cases) and holds up very well even if all 3 Tc, remains a sin to buy a lens to bring it to life multiplied. On D3 I even played around with 2x and 1.4x III Kenko together, were it not that the af breaks down the couple remains acceptable closing a stop. For those traveling abroad it is so phenomenal, for a purely Italian in use maybe I'd look instead to a 500/600 f4 also stabilized at prices that are not much higher in used. I've also used for sports and portrait, in those fields there it for anyone, simply is the top.

Pros: Sharpness, blur, made with TC

Cons: Inability to exclude the manual focus ring

Opinion: Optical outstanding in every respect fully usable with all three TC Nikon, even with the excellent results from TC20III. Going to nitpick I would love if you could turn off the nut MF, on certain occasions (for example by placing the lens on makeshift shelves) can happen (as in all the objectives AFs) that moving the lens for follow the person to act involuntarily ring nut MF and accordingly send a blow to the little things af ... but ...

Pros: Quality and sharpness by fear. Exploits its multipliers returning perfect images that do not show any loss (makes it a little less at medium distances and infinite with respect to the fixed 400 -500-600)

Cons: cost, size, weight

Opinion: I tried them all his predecessors from the old Nikon 300 2.8 AF than twenty years ago that had the mechanical transmission dellAF and drove me crazy because at low temperatures did not want to focus on. But I would say that Nikon has remedied the great building future models and this with great strength and reliability. The speed is amazing MAF using it smooth. With the TC gradually loses more you get closer to 2X but it's still more than enough. The VR is very efficient even though I almost always keep it off because I do not like freehand. The weight is felt and it is easy to miss shots just for the burden on the forearms. Council to always use a tripod for photos in flight. A tool for professionals who really with her three TC replaces egragiamente other optical long, heavy, and expensive especially.

Pros: Sharpness, can be multiplied with TC-14, TC-17 and TC-20, value retention over time (if bought used), made with the limiter

Cons: Weight, size, cost

Opinion: For me it is a point of arrival. It 'superb lens exploited mostly by the shed, but still has a sustainable weight for those who do (like me) also use freehand. From smooth has made incredible, with the TC-14 in practice it loses almost nothing in terms of speed, with the TC-17 loses something but the image quality is still excellent. With the TC-20 III is like a dream, especially on FF. Certainly does not have the versatility of a zoom lens, however, with a single objective, according to the situations, you can have a 300 mm, a 420 mm, a 510 mm and a 600 mm.

Pros: Clear from fear.

Cons: Cost, Space

Opinion: It cost me many hours of overtime, but it was worth it? Since it's practically a cashier I would say yes ... The yield of this lens I was thrilled .... to 2.8 is exceptional ... the focus, color saturation the three-dimensional .. the f ... in short, all the top .. Very favorably multipliers until at least tce 1.7, but dancing is another thing, 2.8 is a Martian ... The VR works well but I thought better, with TC1.7 monopod and have never been able to go below 1/160 maybe VR2 ... The only negative is the weight over the price, or better exploitability daily, for me I'm not a pro, it is a challenging lens when I go out with him I already know that picture I want to do, just requires an approach Pro .. if you go on vacation, it is he who chooses where to go! you always have to have a holiday photo ... Let's say that a 300 f4 afs is more mischievous, more to walk through the mountains, or if the photo does not happen at all the same ...
