Pros: Open yield; image quality for portraits; mr Bokeh; smooth diaphragm ring; 15 slats; M42 screw attack; it is a pleasure to use them; solid construction; light enough.

Cons: it does not have automatic focus; is not 1.5; does not have a bayonet attack; doesn't have jerky iris.

Opinion: Very good lens to use per portrait. The M42 attachment makes it suitable to be used on all machine bodies with adapter. The only flaw is that you have to work in the manual, as for many other goals (leica, samyang and all vintage). So it's suitable for a slow and thought-out way of photographing, but it depends on how you're used to it. Not having the jerky diaphragm is very suitable for shooting videos, also and above all for the unmatched yield at the price you find. I have tried various models, with oil on the slats and not. They're fine. As usual if they have hard rings it is because they are vintage lenses and then: take them from a photoriparer that fixes them.

Pros: Image quality, construction

Cons: Yield to TA

Opinion: "Weird" optics... at full opening presence almost a "flou" effect, which in any case in the portraits is very particular and appreciable. Closing even at 2.8, things change incredibly... starts to become sharp, until you reach peaks of excellence between 5.6 and 11. In the portraits it is a advisable optics, really very beautiful, well made, at least my specimen, made very pleasant color. The diaphragm adjustment system is special, but you get used to it quickly. Taken at a few euros, I like it very much, it has character to sell, but you have to deal with the above written... If you demand extreme sharpness at TA, it is not the right optics.

Pros: 15 curved blades for an always circular hole on all openings. Lightweight compared to other similar lenses (version M42), although it is entirely made of metal and glass. Decent quality / price within 80-130 € (ref. 2015).

Cons: Raw construction (but good outside finishes). Used unsecured - often tampered and / or unregulated - goes a little lucky. Maybe a bit too soft to TA, but it's characteristic for the target-portrait. There are modern versions with 8 straight blades.

Opinion: Of the Jupiter-9 there are different versions of various manufacturers (all EST Europe) with special couplings: M42, M39 Zenit, Contax / Kiev, LTM or M39 Leica / Fed / Zorki and maybe others I do not remember. Each one is different as a body, ring and function, and at least with two types of diaphragm adjustment: rn1) in stop down = with a single stop lock diaphragm ring (usually Contax / Kiev and LTM) rn2) in preset = with two separate springs, respectively a one-stop preselection, and the other fluid to speed up the TA maf and quick return to the working diaphragm (if the optic is in good condition, the dial is operated with a finger). This last type is very convenient to adjust the "correct" amount of blur, without necessarily switching to one of the 7 f / stop (2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16). The filter diameter for the M42 version is 49mm. Some models have anti-reflective treatments, no other treatment. The Jupiter-9 is a visual copy of the Zeiss Sonnar and for thatI'm good enough and good for portraiture, although there is still an economical lens, built in a "spartan and raw" manner. He does not have much to see with the Zeiss construction lenses Germany (more definite), but is a lens of all respect, with a character in any case very particular and personal. On APS-C requires a lens hood corresponding to the equivalent focal length (130mm eq) and then behaves superbly, although in proportion, it loses a bit of incisiveness over the FF. If well revised, it can do much better in everything. Pleasant and decent discretion. Rating 7/10.

Pros: Construction, 15 blades, bokeh, quality / price, preset, clear 2.8 (a TA is in a bit soft)

Cons: Only mf (but for portraiture is not absolutely a problem), ring aperture continues ... So you go to estimate the openings intermediate between those indicated, it is only used as well ... With all the attendant risks

Opinion: Lens purchased for € 85 on ebay and I must admit to being very satisfied. rnVolevo try a 85 fixed with a good opening without spending too slow and this was the solution (version MC). rnPersonalmente not feel the lack of AF (of course it can not be used at events or with moving subjects continuously) using only for portrait and some macro (with extension tubes) .rnLa construction is absurd (now lenses with a strength so no longer build them) ... I think I fell to the ground would make quite a mark on the floor :-) rnConsigliatissimo to those who want to try a 85 quality (optically has nothing to envy to the modern optical ... It is then from the point of view construction is a tank) on the cheap .... Rating 9/10

Pros: Building, 15 blades, bokeh

Cons: Lack of sharpness especially at RT, not easy to find

Opinion: I tried and got this lens because I was bewitched her blurred and I was not disappointed at all. It is not very clear at room temperature, but even at 2.8 significantly improves sharpness and up to 4, however, makes a soft bokeh, watercolor, making it an excellent lens for portraits. From here on out (so to f4 and up) it becomes quite sharp and usable in almost all contexts. My version is the MC, who has treated lenses, and what does that presents a slight soft focus effect (soft focus); I personally do not mind this effect, but its approval is personal. With regard to this board versions (MC) for portraits just for its effect, because it makes them more special; but if you want the same blurry, but you want to avoid the soft focus effect, take one of the other two versions (silver and black, the former has the second most lively colors and vice versa). Finally, do not recommend it to lovers of sharpness, because even turning a little 'more, it becomes more sharp yes, but it does not make him a mostro of sharpness.

Pros: Construction, price, bokeh, smooth adjustment of the diaphragm (15 Blades), presets

Cons: Weight, sharpness at TA, inability to understand the intermediate values ??of openness, difficulties to MAF TA cause low sharpness.

Opinion: I have the version of the MC Jupiter 9, the one with multi-coating treatment, year of production 1991.rnHo quest'obbiettivo mainly tried to experiment with the focal length and manual focus, then that gives the creamy blurred, since it has the diaphragm 15 strip and opening up af/2.rnDevo say that I was amazed as to blur, it's really nice, very protagonist of the picture! rnPer against the sharpness of a TA is low, both the center and the edges where it is scarce ! Fortunately the situation improves at f/2.8 already! rnih according to its characteristics I find it a very good portrait lens, for its definition is not excessive in TA gives a slight soft focus effect which I think is very piacevole.rnConsigliato to anyone with the need to experiment the focal length and portraiture and lovers of the lenses vintage.rnSconsigliato to 'maniacs sharpness', is not that kind of lens!
