sent on 04 Agosto 2025 Pros: Focal length, 95mm (slim) filters, design, price Cons: Difficulty in obtaining a decent copy, continuous defects, infinitely useless clicks as they need to be calibrated (fortunately you can), unusable focus lock Opinion: I have owned this lens for both Canon and Sony. Unfortunately, running into a bad copy is very easy with Irix. When you get the decent copy, however, there are few rivals. Being able to use a screw filter on a 15mm is a lot, a lot, a lot of stuff especially for those who also want to do IR photography. The idea of the infinite click is nice, if it weren't for the fact that the infinity focus is not really at infinity that marks the ring. However, the Sony version (I don't remember the Canon version) has the ability to calibrate the focus to infinity using a small screwdriver. The focus lock is unusable: turning the ring to lock the focus it is inevitable to turn the focus ring as well. Unfortunately, the packaging leaves something to be desired, the lens almost always arrives damaged. On my return request I was told "The missing paint on the focus ring is also due to the packaging (this part is the one that bumps the most against the cardboard when the lens moves during transport), although it is usually not so noticeable. I don't think we will be able to find one without any trace. Irix should probably use plastic bags for these lenses. On the other hand, I don't feel like they've ever had packaging that didn't cause problems so far, and we're talking about five different types of boxes and inserts across the range." I don't think there is any need to add anything else. Anyway, I bought it at a 50% discount from their site for just € 300 with a nice cup for free. All in all, you can't expect much more. Is it worth it? In my opinion, yes. I will use it exclusively as a photography lens with filter (IR, ND, Polarizer) in which I can afford to have a lens that is not perfect.
sent on 21 Novembre 2020 Pros: Distortion, sharpness, weight, infinitely adjustable focus, cost, possibility to mount filters in front. Cons: Almost non-existent assistance in case of problems Opinion: Reading other reviews I came up with an idea that there is no in-depth control of the optics by the manufacturer. In mine I do not find major defects in the optics, yes a bit of vignetting, but already at F4 you almost can not see (let's not forget that it is a 15mm). He had, after some time, a communication problem with the camera and assistance (from Poland) was fugitive, luckily as a smanettone I managed to fix it. All in all, I feel lucky to have him in my glass. Given my specimen I would like to highly recommend it for astrophotography and landscaping but unfortunately it is not known a priori what problems you arrive with given the other reviews.
sent on 20 Novembre 2020 Pros: Construction, design, weight, price, very little distortion Cons: Impossible focus, low sharpness, blue dominants, poor sharpness accompanied by a strange distortion on the right corner below. Opinion: Lho used on canon and Sony with mc11. On canon apsc almost satisfactory result. On sony, let's forget it. But I was surprised by the interior photos. Bought new and resold after a year at 200€... I'm not a professional, but I notice it when the stuff is scarce. It's not good even with the original irix polarizer. I just learned my :p little expense.
sent on 14 Gennaio 2020 Pros: Construction, infinite click, infinite adjustment, lockable window on lampshade to rotate filters, focus lock, f2.4, possibility of front screw and rear jelly filters, little distortion, good flare handling. Cons: Nothing special. Opinion: I have the Firefly version, made of plastic but built very well. It is a lens that is seen to have been designed on the basis of the needs of those who make landscape and astrophotography. Infinite click and adjustable infinity allow you to focus on infinity without looking (in the dark, for example); the maf ring has a bulge that allows a safe grip even with heavy gloves (useful for those who take photos in the cold!); The maf block allows you not to inadvertently lose the correct maf, perhaps by screwing an ND1000 filter to the lens after focusing without; The lampshade has an opening and resealable window to rotate a polarizing filter without removing the lampshade itself; You can use filters to the front screw (95mm,a bloodletting, but less than the slab ones) and rear jellies; the firefly version is also tropicalized (albeit with a few less seals). The price used is even more tempting than the new one. A lens for me really well thought out and carefully crafted. The image quality is very good, with excellent sharpness in the center and also at the edges if you close to f5.6-f11 (as you use to do in landscape). At the corners the coma is up to f3.5, then it goes much better, considering that it is a 15mm you can think of cropping away the worst corners in pp. I vignette abundantly up to f5.6, but it is in the norm for a 15mm f2.4 and honestly corrects itself in a click in pp. It distorts little on ff, with simple cushion distortion, even here with two clicks goes into place. The conclusion that this lens leads me to synthesize is: probably the ergonomics of use and some simple found in certain photographic areas count as much as the quality of the image, because it is definitely better to take photos in focus with an Irix taking advantage of the block of the maf dive or adjusting in the field (maybe at - 20 degrees, that a little stand the calibration of the maf) the scale of infinity, rather than taking out-of-focus photos with a Zeiss Batis because you do not realize that you have a little moved the maf guineas by screwing a filtr or ND1000. All at a price that is clearly palatable. Good Irix!
sent on 08 Dicembre 2018 Pros: Screw Filters-sharpness-No Distortion Cons: If you shoot in backlight can occur in photos the presence of flare that can safely be removed in the development phase Opinion: I own this lens from April 2018 that I use as wide angle on my Nikon D750. Unlike the APS-C universe, in the Full Frame world, there are very few and rare wide-angle lenses that don't force you to assemble holder and bulky, delicate and very expensive slab filters, and that's why I chose the Irix 15 f/2.4. Probably not everyone knows that this lens is produced in two versions: Blackstone and Firefly. I chose the Firefly version. The differences between the two are as follows: The Blackstone costs more because it consists of more robust and heavier material, it is tropicalized to 100% and has phosphorescent numbers. The Firefly is cheaper and is made of lighter material, and tropicalization is partial. The lens group is exactly the same. I never go out to photograph in extreme weather situations, and for this reason I chose the Firefly. I am fully satisfied with the sharpness. I do not notice any particular coma at the edges and especially if I put the machine in bubble, the classic wide angle barrel distortions are almost absent. Those minimal distortions that can occur are easily arranged in post production, same thing with regard to the possible presence of flare. In my gallery I have several photographs made with Nikon D750 + irix 15 f/2.4 that you can go to examine. As filters for this magnificent lens I have a polarizer of nisi and a ND 1000 always of nisi. I forgot to tell you that these IRIX lenses can also fit some small jelly filters applicable on the back, but I have not had a way to try because I prefer the classic screw filters. P.S.: When I mount the 2 screw filters one on the other, first the polarizer and then the ND, there is a vignetting that however I go to eliminate in the development phase. I think I said it all.
sent on 05 Novembre 2018 Pros: Good build quality and good optical quality. Cons: Defective from new, warranty as if there was. Opinion: Bought a specimen for Pentax with showy of defect field curvature, brought back to the store the same day, from 80 GG I don't know anything anymore. Specifically, at full aperture set to infinity, on APS-C good quality except in the center-left part of the image. In this area to focus on a subject indefinitely you had to set the focus on 3 meters. Further suspended judgments waiting to see him, who knows when, come back. The construction looks very good, evidently the alignment of the optics no, since others have found problems in this regard. I was quiet because it was said that initially they would be entrusted to the substitution and not to repair. Based on my single experience, highly unadvisable.
| sent on 09 Settembre 2018 Pros: Absence of distortion, absence of coma, brightness, lightness (Firefly), contrast, MAF block, fine adjustment of the fire to infinity. Cons: Flare Opinion: After having claked the front lens of the Nikkor 14-24 f:2,8, I convinced myself to take this lens into use, and I was thrilled by the optical qualities and its portability. Unfortunately it did not have the hood supplied, but patience, the front lens is still well protected from the barrel and does not protrudes almost at all from the graft of the hood, which among other things is important in case of bad weather. After the first tests it is obvious the sharpness that extends practically to the edges, where the images just undoes. At night the stars appear point on almost the entire frame, without the unpleasant effect of being transformed into commas or triangles as it happens on the 14-24 at full aperture. Compared to this, it is quite evident the presence of parasitic lights if there are very bright sources in the frame, such as lighthouses, lampposts or moon. The chromatic rendition is very pleasant. In fact, since I have this lens, the 14-24 is no longer out of custody. I do not say that it is better in all respects, indeed, probably with daylight the Nikkor outclasses the IRIX, but at night, for me, has no rivals. The fact that you can lock the focus ring with another accessory nut, and that it is possible to finely adjust the focus to infinity by simply unscrewing and tightening a screw, makes it an indispensable tool for me that I do Predominantly nocturnal photos and timelapse. | sent on 07 Giugno 2018 Pros: Excellent sharpness almost at the edges, balanced chromatic rendering, perfectly correct distortion, controlled contrast, absence of chromatic aberration and ghosting, robustness, sexy design Cons: Closes shadows, packaging at risk of damage to the Product. Some users complain about focus Issues. Opinion: The object is very elegant, to the touch conveys a feeling of quality, although I preferred to buy the light version, the Firefly (weighing 568 grams without front and rear cap with the lens hood, 537 grams removed the lens hood too). I have not put between the pros and cons of the weight and the cost, because they can be judged reasonable or excessive at the same time, depending on the characteristics that you prefer in this Perspective. The weight of the Firefly corresponds roughly to that of its most direct competitor, the much cheaper Samyang 14 f/2.8, is considerably lower than the much more expensive Zeiss Distagon f/2.8, and is the middle of the Sigma Boulder Art 14 f/1.8. IRIX has some refinements such as the block of the hood and the door on the lens hood to be able to turn the polarizer without removing the hood itself. The product came to me in a tin box, beautiful to look at, but with worrying holes outwards at the widest part of the lens, which is to show that the lens has undergone compressions or beatings. In any case I have not found any damage, nor the problems reported by other users of out of focus Areas. The object is solid and Robust. As for the warranty in the package I found only one card with four empty fields to fill out, without any address where to send it nor any indication on how to use this card to activate the Warranty. I wrote in the contact area of their site for information and after a few days they responded from Krakow saying that: «The warranty card is only required by some distributors and if it has not been filled in by The seller, you do not have to do anything. The document which is the most important for warranty repair is a copy of the proof of Purchase. " of course, It is an esoteric brand and a small company, with the unknowns of the case for any assistance. The diaphragm is operated by the machine, the focus is manual, which-in a 15mm-represents an advantage, because you always leave the fire at the desired point (you can fix the fire). In hyperfocal and/or closed diaphragm you basically forget the Focus. From the optical point of view, a certain vignetting is visible to TA, which I do not consider annoying. The sharpness is really remarkable: it inevitably reduces in the extreme corners of the frame, where the image is "stretched" by the correction of the distortion (do not forget that it is a 15 mm), but this reduction is circumscribed to a Minimal and negligible portion of the frame, and this is an excellent result. The distortion correction is perhaps the strong point of this lens, obviously when held parallel to the ground: we are close to Perfection. The chromatic rendition is neutral and Faithful. The shadows are rather closed, but at the same time the contrast is not excessive, and this is appreciable in a focal of the Genre. I have not noticed chromatic aberrations, nor annoying flare (at least by day). The bokeh is Nice. In conclusion: the lens is more than valid and allows you to bring home also remarkable results in various light conditions. The problem, if anything, is upstream, in the assessment of the real need to use a focal so Thrust. Stopping at 20 millimeters (which offers a perspective although always remarkable but in my opinion more usable and manageable for landscape purposes) the Nikonista has available the extraordinary 20 GED f/1.8, which at a price not dissimilar weighs half, is much smaller and maneuverable, brighter, has autofocus and suffers from minor optical compromises. however, If you need or prefer the 15 mm, the IRIX is definitely a good choice. |
