| sent on 25 Marzo 2025 Pros: Sharpness at all apertures, spectacular micro-contrast, beautiful colors and magical blur. Cons: A monster, certainly heavy, but the yield makes you forget everything, moreover personally I can shoot handheld, it can be considered as half a day of training that will replace the gym, as far as birdlife is concerned. I took it for shots of the setting moon or dawning near monuments. Opinion: An exceptional lens, there is not much to say about this dated project, but certainly it is not age that takes away immense potential, details, microcontrast, colors, magic blur, it is true it is no longer repairable, but finding the right used, rest assured that such a lens is difficult to break, a real tank, moreover some authorized dealers declare that they can repair it perhaps by cannibalizing on other pieces. | sent on 15 Marzo 2021 Pros: Sharpness also multiplied, brightness, bokeh, construction solidity Cons: Difficulty any spare parts Opinion: Where to start? I have been using this lens for more than a year and it has given me a lot of satisfaction. Both on 1dx and 7d2 it has a fast af that becomes very fast if you use the limiter. I have to admit that the sharpness is fantastic, I would say equal to 400 2.8 is that I also use, which I didn't think possible at first. In birdlife with subjects around 10/15 meters the detail is stunning. The bokeh is splendid and the brightness (added to what has been said so far) still makes it much higher than all the tele zooms released on the market in more recent years (apart from perhaps the various 200-400 cannikon, with which you still see it at least on par). Of course it weighs a little and compared to similar but newer optics it is perhaps slightly unbalanced forward but nothing that prevents its use freehand, for me. On the other hand, I cannot attribute them to optics: age makes any spare parts difficult to find and in Italy for those who do birdlife it can sometimes be a little short, but it holds the 1.4x very well without loss of quality or responsiveness in autofocus. I was skeptical when I bought it used at the store, but it convinced me to the point of excellent photos. For me it still remains an exceptional perspective despite the age and the market that always jumps to the new. Vote 9.5. |
sent on 16 Agosto 2019 Pros: Excellent quality from real series L excellent yield anke full opening anke multiplied 1.4x / 2.0x Cons: At the moment no one Opinion: Bought new in physical store in 2011, the lens is of excellent quality, very incisive and detailed, multiplied anke has no loss of quality, very robust and well tropicalized, excellent x avifaona, never had problems with very fast and precise in hooking the subject anke in strong movement, for my tranquilseen ke nn had ever touched assistance, sent to Canon camera service only in August 2018 x af control, slow, and stabilizer, a BIG goal.
sent on 20 Febbraio 2018 Pros: Full-aperture yield, image quality, "portability" for the focal length. Cons: Uncomfortable the front cap, outside the CPS. Opinion: I got it used on the occasion by a friend about three years ago, practically new. It was my dream in the drawer. It was love at first sight, exceptional, first associated with a 7d where however the coupled was unbalanced, I then took a used 1d mk4 and became the perfect match. Personally I find it usabilissimo freehand, probably it is the limit as focal length / brightness / freehand use, it is not very light of course, but there sta.rnHa very good quality already at full aperture, fast in focus. The only drawback is the front lens cover, uncomfortable to remove, especially when stored in the backpack, I do not digest it right. Furthermore. is out of the list of CPS ... rnAssociato to 1.4 III still maintains a good quality, I often use it freehand and can manage to hook the bird avifauna quite well on the fly and the stabilizer all in all behaves well, I often run shots with little light and relatively short time baces and many were saved.rnWith the 2x II there was a collapse in quality and af almost unusable. Turned to 2x I noticed a quality improvement and all in all the yield is good if the subject occupies a good part of the frame. For shots on the fly better to forget, the limit is 1.4x.
sent on 20 Febbraio 2018 Pros: Total yield both at full opening and diaphragmed; Robustness. Cons: Weight and therefore difficult balancing (with light bodies) for freehand use. Opinion: I bought it used as "logic" added to the excellent 100-400 L IS II and also use the 1.4 x III (maintaining the effectiveness of autofocus, especially with the 6d). With the 2x becomes unmanageable, at least for me I often use only a shoulder handle (self-built). To get a better balance, on my 7dii and 6d I mounted the battery-grip with two batteries. Of course the weight still increases but improves the overall maneuverability. Update 2 February 2019 after a full year of use, I must say that I am very satisfied also because after a while you get used to the footprint and weight. Leaning on a solid support (easel, car, other) the yield is formidable. I also tried shooting "on the fly" and as evidenced by the photos posted on Juza, the result is really excellent. My specimen has the stabilizer a bit noisy but nothing annoying: from the cabin the subjects do not notice. Someone complains (rightly) the discomfort of the original cover-hood: I have eliminated it and in its place use a "stopper" elastic camouflage neoprene that fits perfectly and preserves the front lens.
sent on 13 Marzo 2015 Pros: Sharpness Cons: Weight and dimensions Opinion: I'm using it for over a year and I must say that, excluding the weight of nearly 4 kg, is on a truly exceptional. I come from a 2.8 and 300, making bird in full frame, I had to always multiply with a 2x tc. The cinquecentone smooth is really a blade multiplied with 1.4 tc series III is still usable (preferably close to f8). With 2x tc series III instead notice a considerable drop of FA and to have a noticeable sharpness, you have to go close to f11: in short, to be used with optimal light. It can be used free hand for short periods, but I prefer to shoot using a monopod. Compared with the 300 2.8 is definitely a lens built more for stalking hunting for traveling.
sent on 28 Giugno 2014 Pros: Construction, sharpness, stabilizer, the real possibility of using free-hand, with good quality multipliers, keeping the value in used Cons: Suitcase heavy and unwieldy. Opinion: Great optical quality already at full aperture, excellent with multipliers series III. The stabilizer allows me to still images freehand with 2x 1/250. Great paired with 1DX, also extremely effective with 1d MKIV 7D and even if the balance of the whole is better for me with the bodies of the series 1. Autofocus for my use is quite fast and very precise. Irreplaceable for birdlife. Highly recommended!
sent on 02 Febbraio 2014 Pros: ALL Cons: Weight, price Opinion: Brilliant optics that only the defect to weigh a little bit. Personally I use it for sports photography. Af that does not miss a beat even when paired with 1.4x. with 2x starts to become unmanageable (we always talk about a 1000). Immiagini with amazing colors and with a three-dimensional exaggerated. Highly recommended. If kept well, keeps very well the second hand market.
sent on 23 Gennaio 2013 Pros: Solid, crystal clear, stand in wonder multipliers, take the price on the market. Cons: Weighs about 4 kg, stabilizer and Af older generation. Opinion: An adjective that sums it up: RAZOR SHARP! RnOttica razor sharp already at full aperture, closed in half-stop is the same with many 1.4. That gives the bokeh is creamy and pleasant, the autofocus system is slightly slower than my 400 5.6, but precise. Requires a bit of effort to be used because of its size, but the results that gives more than make up the sforzo.rnUn must-have :-)
sent on 23 Settembre 2012 Pros: uncompromising quality, stabilization, made with the multiplier x 1.4, both APS-C and APS-H, on APS-H is easy even with the 2x Cons: price, weight and size for small birds in flight is preferable to the 300 f: 2.8 + 1.4 x Opinion: when there is need to reach is irreplaceable, especially combined with the APS-H sensor due to the ratio of crop 1 and 3 only, in certain cases (APS-C) I prefer the better handling of the 300 +1.4 x. Most certainly use his own is by stalking, preferably to the location there are not many km to go. The fast shouldering still creates some difficulties. And 'advisable to bring at least a monopod, a handle on the shoulder or, better, a tripod, even light.
sent on 07 Gennaio 2012 Pros: Construction, optical quality, AF speed. Cons: Price and weight (though manageable) Opinion: I just bought (used in excellent condition - thanks Stephen) and already I can not do without it for my naturalistic excursions. Optically excellent, definitely the highest standards of L-series I use it often on 1.4 x 5D Mark II and I guarantee that the AF does not slow down, the colors and sharpness of the images are impressive. Great bokeh, especially "smooth" to 500mm. Only real drawback: the weight of your bag: robust but almost certainly reinforced ... and locks and written Canon equivalent to a "rubami" ...
sent on 25 Ottobre 2011 Pros: Stabilizer, free-hand, image quality Cons: Price, weight when compared with the version f4, 5 L Opinion: I bought the Canon EF 500mm f4, 5 L USM. The pictures do not justify the purchase and always had my doubts at high magnifications, especially as the definition. After you've tried, tried and wanted, in the end I got the IS version. The improvement is remarkable and the weight is increased, but the stabilizer does its job very well and can shoot freehand. I am very satisfied. It is a considerable investment in money, for me, but fully rewarded. I use it on both APS-C (7D) and on APS-H and with the latter, although we are talking about 1D Mark II N, I have the best shots. In my opinion optical indispensable for birds and fotonaturalistica, sports and action shots is rather too long, unwieldy and unwise, better contact the 300mm f2, 8. Excellent with multipliers, especially the series III. A greeting.
sent on 11 Ottobre 2011 Pros: Construction, excellent quality, can be used freehand Cons: Nothing except the price .... but you must consider that it is a stabilized 500mm F74 L series! Opinion: I replaced the Canon 400 f / 4 DO is the 500 f / 4 is, I needed greater range and the 500mm was an obvious choice. The weight and size can be misleading, the 500 f / 4 is can be used freehand without major problems. Of course it is a featherweight and we must make it a habit but it is doable. The wide handle of the collar facilitates transport by hand, on the contrary of 300 2.8 and 400 DO. The quality is high even with the multiplier, difficult to ask for more. Of series 1 can be duplicated with good results and a focal length of 1300mm ... The AF is fast (even multiplied), but not as much as the Canon 400 DO.
sent on 01 Ottobre 2011 Pros: Construction, capacity, comes easily in your hand luggage Cons: Hood bulky, price Opinion: Manageability freehand is pretty good even if the photographer is robust and able to do so. The building is at the top: solid as a rock. The temptation to multiply I think it's strong enough. Thanks to f / 4, you can multiply Canon EF 500mm f / 4 L IS USM with 1, 4x, which becomes a 700mm on APS-C in both cases retains the AF without any problems, great for birds particularly effective to capture distant subjects, small and elusive. It 'a very good supertele travel, you had no trouble bring your Canon EF 500mm f / 4 L IS USM as hand luggage or trolley.
