sent on 13 Gennaio 2026 Pros: Build quality, sharpness, colors, AF, weight (I use it completely handheld), extender compatible Cons: AF in very dark situations. Weight lens hood, the question of spare parts if it breaks Opinion: I state that I have been using it for 2 years, purchased by a user here on the forum. The images are gorgeous, the autofocus is fast even with extenders. On 5dsr the autofocus is very fast, I'm also using it with r6 Mark 2 and adapter and it's a rocket. Only in certain conditions, at first light, does the autofocus struggle to focus. Without a lens hood you can use it freehand (depending on the arms you have), I spend my days up and down the mountains with it. Which is impossible for the series 1 (which I have had the opportunity to try several times) which reaches almost 4kg for the stabilizer. In addition, the image quality is not very different. At open apertures it is sharp and the blur is really gorgeous. This lens is 30 years old and is even sharper, brighter and faster than many zooms used today in photographic hunting, If you have a low budget and need mm for your photos look for one! Oh and as for the lack of spare parts: has one of these guys ever really broken?
sent on 04 Agosto 2025 Pros: Not excessive weight when compared to other 500 more recent ones; f/4.5; Fast autofocus Cons: It is not stabilized; bulky in use and transport Opinion: Dated lens, but it has its reason: lighter than the stabilized models, it loses only half an aperture, for those who do photographic hunting the stabilizer is of little use. He accepts multipliers and in the middle he loses almost nothing by closing 1 stop. Used with 2x on FF it is better than smooth on APSC. With teleconverters it loses a little bit in AF speed, but it is still more than decent. If it is in good condition it is worth it. It won't be super sharp like the 500 f/4 IS II, but it defends itself well. And compared to RF zooms, this one has stratospheric color and light rendition.
sent on 20 Marzo 2025 Pros: Relatively low weight (apart from the lens hood) Top build quality: fast and accurate AF Also remarkable on R series (R3, R7 and R6) Cons: AF that if it breaks it is no longer repairable Lens hood that is a boulder Slightly soft and less crunchy than newly designed RF lenses Opinion: Bought used here on juza this immortal lens After more than 30 years from its construction it still manages to churn out fantastic photos I'm using it on R bodies (R3 R7 and R6) and it behaves very well both in terms of AF and detail It is not as detailed as RF lenses but it can certainly have its say even in 2025 Relatively low weight that for a few shots also allows you to use it handheld Not having the work need of such a lens I have never gone so far as to buy one, but having found a perfect specimen both externally and internally at a modest price I decided to buy it Used for some test shots both on the ski slope and for fauna I think I made a deal. Hopefully nothing breaks as it is no longer repairable at official Canon. Also tried with 1.4x III and I must say that for close subjects it loses almost nothing, if you go to infinity it kneads a bit. If you want to treat yourself to a professional super telephoto at a modest price, I recommend it!!
sent on 14 Dicembre 2021 Pros: Weight (compared to stabilized models), overall quality, solid construction, incredibly nice to have. Cons: Weight (in general terms), not stabilized, a bit dated and therefore softer than younger siblings Opinion: I bought it as the first canvas from a dear friend, mounted on the 5D3 (let's talk about 2021) and then on the 1Dx mk ii (always in 2021) and I went to take naturalistic photos ... Well, what can I say, heavy, bulky, slow to swing because the hood is beautiful tough and not stabilized, but despite all this, the joy of having it with me in some workshops I have done is incomparable. I broke my back in the forest chasing deer, made 4k video of the ibex on the mountains (climbing the wall, kit in the backpack) and split the hair of the foxes on the meadows ... all this with the awareness of having with me a solid slightly nostalgic friend. I changed it with a 300 f2.8 Is, possibly to be multiplied, much lighter and many more recent, but sometimes I still miss the somewhat retro mode of returning current and expendable files in any circumstance. True that he is 20 years old on his back, but if you are lucky enough to find one put well at an acceptable price I would take it home, even if only to know to have it back there with me. Small note: Moving from 5Dmk3 (with BG) to 1D mk iii and 1Dx mk ii the AF has come back to life again.
sent on 21 Dicembre 2018 Pros: To be a 500mm is quite light weight, weighs less than the newer, very fast AF, excellent image quality and good resistance to flare Cons: It is not stabilized, huge and heavy lens hood, we hope that there are no problems, because of spare parts repairs are very unlikely Opinion: I found it used for about a month at a very good price, it was love at first sight, the first joy was discovering that I can shoot freehand with excellent results, the handle of transport helps not little in the movements, I have not yet managed to post photos Because of the fog and the various commitments, but as soon as possible I will. I conclude by saying that it is very good even with the multiplier 1.4 x, in short I recommend it to those who can not afford the new. Rated 9.5.
sent on 06 Ottobre 2018 Pros: Sharpness-very Fast AF-weight-price Used. Cons: Canon politics on old but high class L pieces no more spare parts/revisions Opinion: I took this lens used year 1992 maybe one of the first specimens... but in good condition because the 300mm F4 is was a bit too short.... short for the photos I currently do. What about a whole other lens, a whole other way to photograph because the angle of the field is only 5 ° but once you take the hand becomes easier. Compared to newer specimens the weight of this 500mm is the lightest, I use this lens even without tripod and the weight is not a problem because when I go around I put the tripod collar between the strap of the "trousers" and the weight becomes ZERO. As for is that there is no this is not a problem because the shutter speed that I usually use is very fast-used for photos of (birds in Flight-sport motorcycles etc.). I tried this lens with 1DX and 6d MkII and AF in both cases it is very fast... Spectacular. The biggest problem is that if you have problems you can not lead to a center Canon this because they do not dare even remotely revise it or if by chance you break fix it.... a real pity.... good is that you can find at a really low price 1500 /2000 Euro. I recommend it to everyone especially if one is not really convinced to spend 3000/4000 euros for a 500mm "used" although newer.
sent on 02 Agosto 2015 Pros: Classical Canon super telephoto with first fluorite lens: 5.6 great sharpness and contrast; high color quality, thanks to the optical scheme of only 8 lenses. Weighing only 3 kg well distributed, with moderate imbalance forward: perfect for use freehand without shoulder. Excellent duplication with 1.4 III. Speed ??and accuracy of focus: the speed of af is not smaller than that of the later models. Cons: Soft at full aperture. Lens without stabilizer. Hood unusable freehand (it weighs almost 700 grams). Opinion: I took one of the last products, practically never used by the previous owner. The sharpness and f do not regret later models. The photos have the most beautiful colors and vibrant 300 II is duplicated. The af 7 II provides with a very high percentage of photos in focus (birds in flight). In this type of photography using very fast shutter speeds, which do not need stabilization. I paid this lens almost four times less of the latter type, and given the quality of the photos, they are very happy with the purchase. I recommend it to those who want to photograph birds in flight free hand.
sent on 08 Marzo 2014 Pros: I always use good lens with 1.4x without any problems, in the passerines shots I always use it with the diaphragm 10 -11 yield is also excellent with aperture 6.3 with 1.4 is great at good prices is very light weight the series is only 3kg weighs 3,850-series is 2 weighs 3180 Cons: perhaps in strong backlight suffers is with the tripod is not very necessary especially if you shoot with a 4.5 times higher being 1.4 becomes 6.3 with many cameras canon reads up to 5.6 but with the series and now 1d 5d mk3 is fine and at least with my 1DSMK III is quite fast even though the law only the central point for the spare parts we hope that will not break Opinion: say that I use it for 3 years now has not given me problems ever one thing that bothers me is the lens hood when I used the 500 fd pull the hood was very practical in both the lens is put in place the hood you can also do some hand-held shots before the weight is felt without 1.4 is very bright and fast especially with my camera
sent on 15 Novembre 2013 Pros: Lightness, clarity, detachment of the plans, the possibility of using freehand for short periods. Cons: No spare parts if it breaks, no stabilizer Opinion: I have about a week this wonderful lens that I was lucky to find them for sale here on Juza. rnEra just what I wanted. A 500 that did not cost a fortune but it was equally clear and also lighter than its successori.rnrnNe are really excited about it. The quality is excellent even with a 1.4x (I use the Kenko DGX). Excellent speed of focus. Perfect separation from the fund. I find it very three-dimensional compared to what I get with the 300.
sent on 03 Luglio 2012 Pros: Light weight, optical quality, autofocus speed, resistance to flare Cons: lack stabilizer, difficulties in finding spare parts if it breaks. Opinion: I have very little to this point, but you will immediately notice its large optical quality, lightweight, can be used freehand but lacks the stabilizer so the task requires more attention. AF is a chip limiter and the MAF is even more. can not recommend this light! as long as you find it at a great price, parts are hard to find. if I could go back I would do it hands down ... AF confirm that the kenko pro 300 DGX continues to function and the quality and speed is affected insignificantly in .....
sent on 02 Luglio 2012 Pros: Light weight, optical quality, speed autofocus. Cons: No stabilization, sensitivity to aberrations in backlight (worse than the 300 f/2.8 IS), same story absence spare parts in case of breakage. Opinion: I went from 300 to 500 Is f/2.8 f/4.5. For me it is a fantastic lens! Believe that the perfect focus on aps-C is the 500mm. And 'the right balance between focal and weight for use in freehand. Who's more, with the Kenko 1.4x DGX the pro f continues to run smoothly. The speed af is very close to the 500 f / 4 Is, despite the old age ... I sold it to move to 400 C, but if I had to buy back a telephoto lens to replace my 400 f/5.6 with a limited number, of course not riprenderei 500mm. These are my personal impressions ...
