Pieridae


I Pieridi sono una grande famiglia di farfalle di cui sono note circa 1500 specie diffuse soprattutto nell'Asia e nell'Africa tropicale. In Italia ne sono state segnalate meno di venti, undici delle quali sono presenti nell'Arcipelago Toscano. I Pieridi hanno generalmente ali dal colore di fondo bianco o giallo e la maggior parte delle specie mostra un'evidente differenza di aspetto tra maschi e femmine (dimorfismo sessuale). Alcuni Pieridi sono tra le farfalle più comuni delle nostre aree, e, pur preferendo in genere prati e zone arbustive, non mancano specie che volano anche nelle aree ombrose o nelle piccole radure dei boschi. Per la loro predilezione verso le piante di cavolo, i Pieridi bianchi vengono genericamente indicati come “cavolaie”.
