Nymphalidae 1

I Ninfalidi (Nymphalidae) sono diffusi praticamente ovunque sulla Terra, dal Circolo Polare Artico fino all'Equatore. Le farfalle della attuale famiglia dei Ninfalidi erano un tempo ripartite in due grandi famiglie: i Ninfalidi e i Satiridi (Satyridae). Studi recenti però sembrano suggerire che le relazioni filogenetiche tra le specie appartenenti a questi due gruppi non posssano giustificare la formazione di due famiglie distinte. I Ninfalidi e i Satiridi sono stati i quindi riuniti in una sola famiglia. Ciononostante vi sono notevoli differenze nelle abitudini, nell'aspetto e nelle capacità di volo tra questi due gruppi. I Ninfalidi preferiscono spesso luoghi assolati e margini di boschi, hanno volo battuto e potente e spesso riescono a compiere grandi migrazioni come la Vanessa del cardo. Al contrario i Satiridi hanno volo più lento, ridotte capacità dispersive e preferiscono generalmente ambienti freschi e ombrosi. La scarsa capacità dispersiva dei Satiridi fa si che negli ambienti insulari si formino popolazioni isolate. Questo permette che si verifichino le condizioni per la deriva genetica e per fenomeni di relittualità. Ed è infatti proprio tra i Satiridi che si registra il maggior numero di endemismi insulari tra le farfalle. Oltre alla forte tendenza a formare endemismi, sono comuni nei Satiridi fenomeni di isolamento meno appariscenti ma importantissimi, come le distribuzioni particolari di alcune sottospecie che mantengono la memoria degli eventi paleogeografici dell'area Mediterranea. Da questo punto di vista i Satiridi (insieme ai Licenidi) sono le farfalle che più delle altre hanno una storia da raccontare, rivelando quali processi biogeografici hanno fatto sì che si arrivasse alla configurazione attuale dei popolamente delle diverse specie nelle varie isole.
