Zerynthia

La Zerynthia (cassandra o polyxena) è una farfalla dalla livrea inconfondibile rispetto alle altre specie di farfalle italiane. Si tratta di una specie strettamente legata ad alcune Aristolochiaceae, piante nutrici dei bruchi. Frequenta prati e radure dal livello del mare fino a circa 1200 m di quota. E' una specie univoltina e gli adulti si possono osservare, vicino alla pianta ospite, per poche settimane all'anno, tipicamente in aprile. Recentemente la specie è stata distinta dal punto di vista genetico e sulla base di differenze morfologiche dell'apparato genitale, in Z. cassandra e Z. Polyxena. Dal punto di vista distributivo, il Po è considerata la linea di demarcazione: a nord del fiume è presente Z. Polyxena mentre a sud è presente Z. Cassandra (anche se in alcune località convivono).
