I Bajau, conosciuti anche come gli zingari del mare, sono popolazioni indigene che vivono al largo delle coste di Malesia, Indonesia e Filippine. In passato si muovevano liberamente nei mari del Sud-est asiatico mentre oggi sono più stanziali, ma ancora vivono strettamente legati al mare in piccole palafitte di legno costruite sull'acqua bassa o in barche chiamate “lepas”, lontani dalla terraferma e la sua società. I Bajau hanno una conoscenza dell'oceano difficile da eguagliare: imparano a nuotare e a pescare già da piccolissimi, diventando tutti esperti apneisti. La loro attività principale è proprio la pesca e raggiungono la terraferma solo per commerciare il pescato o per ripararsi dalle tempeste troppo forti. Sono apolidi: non sono riconosciuti da nessuno Stato, non hanno alcun diritto fondamentale e sono considerati immigrati illegali. L'inasprimento dei controlli, il graduale declino deila fuana marina e le restrizioni ai loro movimenti stanno mettendo a rischio la sopravvivenza dei Bajau, ma trasferirsi sulla terraferma non è ancora un'opzione.
