Matera e i suoi Sassi

Matera è una bellissima città situata su un affioramento roccioso in Basilicata . La città è conosciuta per i suoi Sassi. I Sassi di Matera, sono antichi ambienti rupestri scavati nella roccia sopra la Gravina, abitati fin dalla preistoria. Simboleggiano le origini contadine ed agricole della città ed oggi, sono uno delle testimonianze più incredibili del mondo. i Sassi sono enormi labirinti di case scavate nel tufo, vicoletti, scalinate, spiazzali che riservano continue (e bellissime) sorprese. Visitare i Sassi di Matera è come fare un viaggio nel passato, dove tutto è rimasto pressoché uguale. Intorno agli anni '50 però i Sassi furono definiti una Vergogna Nazionale diventando una zona deserta ai margini della nuova città. Durante quegli anni Matera aveva assistito ad un incredibile declino e la gente viveva in condizioni igieniche disastrose, tanto che nel 1952 i Sassi furono chiusi e gli abitanti sfollati. Solo un gruppo di giovani del posto, ora ottantenni, non si rassegnarono a quella tragica fine e fondarono il Circolo delle Scalette recuperando case, chiese rupestri e grotte. Dalle loro ricerche storiche uscì fuori che la città in passato era un sistema perfetto: i tetti ospitavano orti e giardini e a volte cimiteri. Le cisterne portavano l'acqua direttamente alle abitazioni ed anche la neve veniva immagazzinata e una volta sciolta utilizzata. Con il degrado del '900 tutto questo andò perduto, ma i segni della civiltà e della saggezza architettonica di Matera vecchia restano visibili dietro gli intrichi di case e massi ed oggi la città è considerata una delle perle più belle del Sud Italia. Negli ultimi decenni questa incredibile zona è stata protagonista di opere di recupero che hanno riportato i Sassi all'antico splendore entrando anche a far parte nel 1993 del Patrimonio Unesco.
