I Mentawai sono popoli indigeni che vivono nelle isole Mentawai, principalmente nella giungla dell'isola di Siberut. Sono tuttora isolati dalla società moderna e mantengono il loro tradizionale stile di vita e la loro cultura tramandata da millenni. I Mentawai vivono in lunghe case di legno chiamate “uma”, in pace ed in armonia con la Natura, che offre loro tutto ciò di cui hanno bisogno e viene trattata con grandissimo rispetto. Credono che qualsiasi cosa in Natura abbia un'essenza spirituale e la loro religione animista deve regolare il rapporto tra esseri umani e spirituali. Gli sciamani, chiamati “sikereis”, sono i custodi della cultura Mentawai e hanno la responsabilità di tramandare tutte le conoscenze tradizionali, dalla religione ai tatuaggi.
