Gradara War Cemetery

Oggi ho portato mio figlio diciassettenne a vedere il cimitero della seconda guerra mondiale a due passi da casa mia, Gradara. 22 anni in zona, ci sono andato oggi per la prima volta. 1191 soldati appartenenti alle sole forze armate del Commonwealth (Inglesi e Canadesi), morti in due settimane. La maggior parte dei quali ventenni. Mancano Tedeschi, Italiani, Americani, etc. etc. Gli ho raccomandato la lettura de: "Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale" di Erich Maria Remarque sulla prima guerra mondiale combattuta da ragazzi, libro che lessi alla sua eta'. Il numero dei sepolti e' paragonabile a quello degli studenti del liceo che frequenta. Possiamo parlarne quanto ne vogliamo di estremismi e delle loro conseguenze (la guerra) ma bisogna che se ne prenda coscienza toccando, calpestando il terreno. "He died that we might live" e' corretto. "He died because we started the war" mi sembra piu' corretto.
