2018 - Risiera di San Sabba
Risiera di San Sabba
The Risiera di San Sabba is the only Nazi concentration camp in Italy that was equipped with a crematorium. It is situated in the city of Trieste, in northeastern Italy, in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, bordering Slovenia. Unlike other places of death during the Nazi regime, this concentration camp was located inside a city. The whole complex was originally built in 1913 as a rice husking factory in San Sabba, a rural area that was being integrated into the expanding town of Trieste at that time. After the armistice day on September 8th 1943, the Risiera was initially used by the German forces as a prison camp for Italian servicemen. Soon after, in October, it took up the more ominous role of internment camp for political prisoners, Yugoslav partisans and Jews, who waited to be deported to other camps. Eyewitness estimates indicate that over 3000 people were killed within the camp premises.
