 Papilionidi

PAPILIONIDI Famiglia di Farfalle della divisione dei Ropaloceri. Le farfalle del genere Papilio Latr. comprendono moltissime specie fra le più belle che si conoscono, rappresentate in tutte le faune. Si distinguono per la loro grandezza, i disegni e, soprattutto nelle regioni tropicali, per i loro colori smaglianti di verde e di azzurro, o con fondo nero o a macchie rosse e bianche. Nella maggior parte della specie le ali posteriori sono provviste di code. Nel territorio europeo centrale e meridionale il genere Papilio. è rappresentato dalle specie a fondo giallo: machaon L. (il Macaone), alexanor Esp., e hospiton Géné (proprio della Sardegna e della Corsica soltanto), inoltre dal podalirius L. e dal feisthamelii Dup. a fondo bianco. Nella famiglia dei Papilionidi sono compresi pure i generi Parnassius. Questi ultimi vivono volando anche sui ghiacciai fino a 5000 metri nell'Himalaya (Parn. epaphus B.). La specie Parnassius apollo, P. phoebus e P. mnemosyne sono le più diffuse nella fauna italiana, distribuite dagli 800 ai 1000 metri in poi su tutte le Alpi, sugli Appennini fino all'Aspromonte.
