 VANESSE

VANESSE (lat. scient. Nymphalidae). - Gruppo d'Insetti Lepidotteri diurni fra i più noti e più vistosi nei nostri climi. Hanno antenne clavate, corpo peloso e ali coi margini angolosi o frastagliati e ornate di vivacissimi colori sulla faccia superiore, mentre quella inferiore (marmoreggiata e marezzata di tinte oscure) rende quasi invisibili queste bellissime farfalle quando si posano sul suolo o sui tronchi tenendo le ali verticali sul dorso. Le loro zampe anteriori non funzionano per la locomozione e pare portino organi gustativi. Sono famose le imponenti migrazioni che la Vanessa cardui (una specie diffusa in tutto il mondo, da un circolo polare all'altro) compie spesso in masse innumerevoli, con colonne che attraversano a volo il Mediterraneo o l'Europa intera, sorvolando anche le Alpi. Ad esempio della grande variabilità di molte farfalle in funzione delle condizioni dell'ambiente in cui si sviluppano, vengono citate la Araschnia levana con la sua forma estiva prorsa (che fu creduta specie differente), ed altre Vanesse (v. dimorfismo).
