Tuttavia, come osserva Marc Augé, nella contemporanea società dei consumi, luoghi e nonluoghi si compenetrano reciprocamente, per cui la possibilità del nonluogo non è mai assente da un qualsiasi luogo. In questo modo, se il luogo è uno spazio relazionale, identitario, storico, in cui gli utenti si riconoscono, il nonluogo ha caratteristiche opposte. Esso, infatti, rappresenta uno spazio di transito, di attraversamento, progettato per una umanità generica che non ricerca spazi identitari.
