Nel 2005, il Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (http://www.millenniumassessment.org/en/index.html) classifica i benefici forniti dagli ecosistemi al genere umano in 4 categorie: supporto (produzione primaria, formazione di suolo e nutrienti); approvvigionamento (cibo, energia, acqua potabile, materiali); di regolazione (del clima, maree, impollinazione, incendi, alluvioni, frane ed erosione); culturali (spirituali, valore estetico del paesaggio, ricreativi, turistici). Alla base dei Servizi ecosistemici c'è la biodiversità, senza la quale non potrebbero esserci. La visione del Millennium Ecosystem Assesment è antropica.
