Nel 1894 Freud distingue le normali paure dalle formazioni sintomatologiche. Le FOBIE sono le paure durevoli e hanno forme fisse o mutevoli. Esse si insinuano in noi e scavano la nostra psiche. Immagini frammentate si muovono mostrando un mondo irreale. Queste scene persecutorie proiettate nelle nostre fantasie modificano il nostro equilibrio e ci inducono allo smarrimento. Spesso per contrastarle bisogna sollecitarle con altre paure di eguale o più ampia portata.
