Sacra di S. Michele

Sacra di San Michele, monumento simbolo del Piemonte. L'abbazia nasce tra il 983 e il 987 dalle esigenze e dalla cultura del pellegrinaggio, destinata a diventare ben presto centro di spiritualità e crocevia di scambi culturali di straordinaria ricchezza. Il secolo XII segna il periodo di massimo splendore dell'abbazia, luogo di ospitalità per pellegrini ed aristocratici e fulcro di un patrimonio disseminato in tutta Europa. In seguito il quadro sociale locale, la politica sabauda e le difficoltà economiche sempre più condizionano la vita monastica, sospesa nel 1622 dal Papa Gregorio XV. Nel 1836 Carlo Alberto incarica Antonio Rosmini di insediare alla Sacra una comunità di suoi religiosi, che tuttora custodisce gli edifici abbaziali.
