Sigma 500mm f/4.5 AF APO (1988 version) Pros: Despite its age, this lens is capable of sharp images with lovely bokeh. Can be bought for a reasonable price, considering the modern alternatives at this focal length and speed (f/4.5) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cons: Very heavy, so not easy to hand-hold - although possible for short lengths of time. I use a monopod when walking about for birds. Auto-focus is slow but accurate. This lens is good when used, say in a hide or a fixed position on a tripod or resting on a bean bag, then it is capable of good pictures. The main problem with Canon is that on modern cameras it can only be used at full aperture f/4.5 with my 7D . My 6D gives /f4.5 and f/5.It works completely with certain older cameras, but the pixel count and ISO is going to be low! Opinion: Good value if you can find one these days, but a bit of a dinosaur! However, I like mine despite it's limitations and use it regularly in good light.Martin Swannell. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- sent on December 20, 2014 |
