pentax_70Pentax SMC DA 70mm f/2.4 AL Limited

Pros: Lightweight, construction, integrated hood, dimensions, microcontrast

Cons: Auto focus, full aperture sharpness, max aperture 2.4

Opinion: I use this lens for outdoor portraits. The sharpness at 2.4 is not excellent but it recovers well by closing a little more. The fact that it has an aperture limited to 2.4 does not allow to have a worthy bokeh (a 1.4 would have been better). I found it very difficult in the auto focus as it is not quick although it is a fixed. It has a good microcontrast and the colors are alive. This goal, in my opinion, is a good compromise between bulk / weight and optical quality.

pentax_35_macroPentax SMC DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited

Pros: Limited construction, macro, sharpness, contrast, built-in light screen

Cons: Slow AF

Opinion: It's the best Pentax lens I've had. It is very sharp already at full opening and has an exceptional contrast. Given the short focal point, the AF is a little slower due to the longer stroke but for this reason it is very precise. It's the classic lens to keep.

pentax_15Pentax SMC DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited

Pros: Compact, lightweight, fast AF (low mass), flare resprain, low chromatic aberration, focal, integrated lampshed, Limited series construction, low distortion

Cons: Low sharpness in general (especially at the edges), low contrast

Opinion: It is a wide angle for APS-C of the Limited series and therefore characterized by a good construction / material. It represents a compromise between footprint/weight, construction quality and optics. In fact, it does not generally have a good optical quality in terms of sharpness and this affects: 1. focus accuracy; 2. image definition; 3. increased presence of luminance noise especially in shadow areas (comparison with other objectives with the same shooting parameters). For the optical quality that presents the advice mostly for outdoor outdoors in the daytime. In short, my review perfectly matches what is indicated in the Dpreview review. This is a choice to be made on the most desired aspect. Other wide angles may have greater sharpness but sin in greater distortion, chromatic aberration, flares etc...

pentax_da_50Pentax SMC DA 50mm f/1.8

Pros: Light, good value for money, sharpness in general, good yield all over the frame (f2.8 onwards), blurry, autofocus

Cons: Limited sharpness range f1.8-f2, plastic attachment

Opinion: Tactasi of economic alternative for portraits but with good value/quality price. CONSTRUCTION: Plastic (also the attachment...) and light. Although the external structure is made of plastic, the elements are well fixed and do not have any play that can compromise the optical yield (diffraction, out of focus, etc...). I mean, it looks like the internal mechanics are good. OPTICAL PERFORMANCE: - sharpness present only in the center in the range f1.8-f2.4 with a pleasant blurry that makes it suitable, in my opinion, for artistic photos; - reaches a good level of sharpness over the entire frame already at f4; - at f8 you have excellent sharpness It generally has a good contrast. AUTOFOCUS: Because of the little mass it has, it turns out to be fast.

pentax_kpPentax KP

Pros: Low noise level, good white balance, wide dynamic range, good ergonomics, reduced weight and footprint

Cons: Small, low-resolution display, ineffective automatic white balance for artificial light, short battery life, shutter with reduced life cycle, strong built-in flash limitation

Opinion: I have been moving from Pentax k-3 to KP for a few months now and have seen sharp improvements in image quality in terms of a wider dynamic range and medium iso noise level (640). Generally, compared to the K-3, I receive a gain, in terms of lower noise level, of 1.5/2 stop. Commendable!!! With the K-3 I just shot no more than Iso 800 (receiving, however, a considerable level of noise) while, instead, with the KP I push myself up to Iso 1600 getting good results. The noise level content, for example, at Iso 1600 results in a slight loss of detail operated by the co-processor or as Ricoh defines acceleration unit that also allows to extend the sensitivity field up to ISO 819200. It seems, however, that the noise reduction operated by the co-processor is not deactivated and also has an effect on the RAW. That's why some photographers aren't very happy with that. I have not found reliable the automatic white-balance system so I recommend manually setting the artificial light if the relevant condition occurs as the system itself always fails to automatically individually adjust the correct start. If set well the white balance yield is good though a little warmer than the K-3. Good presence of an electronic shutter that, unfortunately, is of type "Rolling shutter" and not "global" thus creating distortions for objects/subjects in rapid motion. Unlike the K-3, this new camera uses a shutter with a life cycle reduced to 100,000 cycles. In my opinion, a high number of shutter cycles is synonymous with greater robustness/reliability of the hardware component. The orientable display is comfortable but smaller and at a lower resolution than the K-3. The camera is full of customizable controls and is really very compact and lightweight. The battery lasts almost half as long as the K-3 but there are some upgraded specimens on the market or at least you can opt for the battery grip which, however, renders the compactness/weight of the camera in vain. The built-in flash has 2 strong limitations in occasional use: 1. has a very limited driving number (half of the K-3); 2. The light is concentrated in the center so the background of the photos is purely dark. In fact looking at the size of the lamp, the latter is tiny and very short. Unfortunately, Dxomark no longer tests Pentax cameras, so KP's performance is not on its website. Those who wish to investigate further can, however, find the performance measurements on the following independent website: http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU.htm#Pentax%20K-3_14,Pentax%20KP_14

pentax_k3Pentax K-3

Pros: Autofocus, detail, futures

Cons: Noise already evident from ISO 400, flash with low performance, low dynamic range, low color depth, not faithful color reproduction

Opinion: 3B which also revealed Dpreview on non-faithful reproduction of the color red. The flash does not seem to be appropriate to that machinery in the second version of the K-3 was even removed. Being accustomed to the photographic quality of K.5II if I were to go back would pass directly to a FF rather than take me home more noise, low color depth as well as the dynamic range. It was better, for a aps-c, stopping at 20 mpixel waiting for a technological progress. For example Nikon abandoned the sensor 24 mpixel of Toshiba (discrete output) which mounted the D7100 to use, now, a Sony sensor (highest performance) always 24 mpixel on the D7200, but this is just an example because the photo quality you see, then, on the field.
