![]() | Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Pros: Image quality from every angle Cons: bulky and heavy, embarrassing lens hood and lid, aesthetically ugly compared to Nikon's first lenses, suffering from heavy front focus. Opinion: Kindly, it took me 2.5 hours to fine-tune the AF of the 85mm 1.4 DG Art on a Nikon D850 with the Sigma USB dock. The lens was affected by a heavy front focus. The final settings for each step were (from short to long focusing distance, on a scale of -20 to +20): +15; +10; +9; +9. These settings aren't suitable for all D850s, but at least it can give you an idea of how far the focus was from where it was. Now even at 1.4 it is a razor sharpened by a Japanese sword master. A very high sharpness, very rarely found in other lenses, which enhances the capabilities of the Nikon D850 sensor and gives images with an uncommon micro contrast. The other optical characteristics of the lens are also excellent: I was unable to put it in difficulty in backlight, chromatic aberrations always under control and limited, fall off contained even at 1.4, minimal distortions. The defocus (bokeh, blurry, call it what you want) is nice and soft in my opinion. The colors are beautiful, vivid and soft, they seem in line with the original Nikon lenses. Absolutely excessive weight and size for an 85. Aesthetically not as beautiful as Nikon's lenses. The Nikon 85 1.4, in any version for DSLR is always smaller and lighter. A sore point, although not affecting the photographic performance: the quality of the materials and the construction of the cover and the lens hood (especially the front cover) are bad if contextualized to the level of this lens that made me think of something better by reporting the indication "Made in Japan". A bit of a shame from this point of view for the Japanese company that points out a clear attempt to save money. The user gets a feeling of something cheap. For me this is really a shame because the pleasure of using also passes through the quality of these accessories. The price of the Sigma is in line with the performance and cheaper than the Nikons in general. Found used I took it home in good condition at 620. sent on March 27, 2025 |
