canon_g1xCanon PowerShot G1 X

Pros: Image quality, portability, ISO holding, articulated LCD, night shooting function.

Cons: Useless viewfinder, dancer AF.

Opinion: I bought this machine at a great price some time ago. Taken with me for a trip, I don't think I'll sell it. Excellent images in all light conditions, both JPG and RAW (quite malleable). Very wearable and not too heavy, it turned in the pocket of the coat, always ready to use. It doesn't make me regret newer and more powerful sensors from Fuji. Set to P, with automatic ISO up to 1600 it's a great travel tip and shoot, reliable and discreet. The images offer a marked contrast that, with some tricks on the white balance, recalls old films such as the c200. The handheld night shooting function (takes three photos and combines them) is useful and well performing. Too bad it only produces a JPG and not a RAW. There are flaws, such as the practically useless viewfinder: it covers only 70% of the image and it is difficult to compose correctly. The AF is often fluctuating and the use in MF is cumbersome. I got around this by using a small center focus area, using the old method of recomposing before shooting. Center-weighted average exposure works better than the others, avoiding overly large underexposures. Recommended for those looking for prints up to 30x40, portability and slightly retro colors.
