![]() | Leica M (Typ 240) Pros: Build quality Cons: Outdated system Opinion: Small premise: I photographed first with screw-on Leicas and then with the M system, when single-lens reflex cameras were already evolved and the comparison was already largely in favor of the latter. It was the seventies. The Galilean viewfinder equipped with a rangefinder was already a system that fully showed all its limits. At the same time, the frosted glass of the reflex cameras was already very bright and allowed correct focusing even with pushed lenses. Then came autofocus and the rest that follows is recent history. I bought a 240 with three leitz lenses. I found the same Galilean viewfinder brought to the state of the art, but always with the same problems as 80 years ago. Then of course, there is a rear monitor, where to help manual focus you can enlarge the image, not very quickly. It can be equipped with an EVF2 electronic viewfinder. In practice you can turn it into mirrorless, but into an old-fashioned mirrorless. Then with the dedicated handle it is also equipped with various USB ports which are also present on a 100 euro compact. If desired, with an adapter ring you can use the R lenses, including zooms. But it's all adapted, all fake and above all terribly expensive. Does all this make sense in 2024? I don't think so. I make Giovanni Gastel's thought my own. Those who have remained attached to analogue, to old filming systems, do photographic archaeology. Very free, but it is an archaeology. Today, current systems allow achievements that were unthinkable up to 30 years ago. It's like a writer who says he can't produce good novels because he doesn't use the old typewriter anymore. I will be objected: but what about Leica quality!! you want to put the quality of the files. Insuperable. Here too, do not make direct comparisons with other professional systems. You would be very disappointed, unless you use aspherical lenses for the cost of a garage. so, in essence, who is a digital Leica M aimed at? It is certainly a status symbol. You want to put walking around with thousands of euros hanging around your neck. It is definitely an object to own for those who are nostalgic for the past, for objects still built by hand. Then I don't know. The real-world fields of use are quite limited. Generalist photography, now called street photography. But here too there is much better and above all more practical. sent on November 15, 2024 |
