nikon_z9Nikon Z9

Pros: RAW file quality, near-perfect AF, excellent viewfinder, highly customizable, operating speed

Cons: Near-perfect but not perfect AF, awkward card door, articulated LCD with excessive limits, size and weight, system without universal lenses

Opinion: Having it for some months now, I can leave my weighted judgment to posterity... with this Z9 Nikon has finally shown that it can keep up with the competition, with an excellent machine even if with some limitations. The RAW is of high quality, nothing to complain about; if you choose the compressed format – almost identical to the "pure" – the files weigh about thirty mega, more than reasonable for a 47 MP sensor. JPG, on the other hand, is good, some refinement requires it. The viewfinder is of the highest level, and does not regret the optical one of the SLR; too bad that the rear LCD is not fully articulated. The operating speed is respectable, from instant ignition to immediate response to commands. There are a lot of customizable buttons, but I would also have made available the four on the knob on the left, which as they are personally are useless to me. Too bad for the card door: it is poorly designed and forces you to use two hands. The device as a whole offers a very good feeling of solidity, even if Nikon could have contained a thread in weight and size. But let's get to the Holy Grail, that autofocus under everyone's attention: I say it right away, it is very valid, among the best on the market today, but it is not perfect. The speed is at the highest level; In low light it still struggles a little. Having had the opportunity to use the competitor reference system (Sony) thoroughly, I have a term of comparison measured in first person: the "extended spot" mode, heir to the points of the SLRs, has no flaws; the same cannot be said of the "broad", the one that draws on AI to identify human and animal shapes, faces and eyes. The tracking behaves well but sometimes (too many, in my opinion) unfortunately is deceived by contrasting details that are not the one chosen. The eye recognition is effective, you can see that Nikon has made a considerable effort since the days of the Z6/7, but still remains an inch behind the competition. Even here sometimes it is wrong, I think and hope that it is "only" a software side work so it can be improved with the next upgrades that will surely come. Ultimately, the spearhead (which I would buy again) of a high-level system even if not yet complete in terms of variety of choice of optics.
