sony_fe28-70ossSony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS

Pros: It does what it has to do, which is the kit optics. Otherwise, if you are looking for performance, you have to buy an ad hoc one. Silent AF, pretty fast and accurate. Discrete quality at intermediate apertures (f/8-f/11) that degrades in a non-dramatic way to more open apertures. Superior flare resistance to other economic optics. Lightness and compactness Stable hood.

Cons: Quality nì, sufficient for a kit optics. Stabilizer really not very effective compared to other Sony Full-Frame OSS lenses. Rubber quality of the bass rings. Little three-dimensionality. Price if bought separately.

Opinion: It is a kit optics and, in my opinion, its quality is just as sufficient as you would expect. For an occasional amateur photographer, who may have switched to Full-Frame on a whim or because he has found an opportunity, I think it can also be fine. The problems arise precisely when you ask him for that something more on the sharpness / resolution front, prodondity or chromatic. Photos on the fly (e.g. events/parties) are not too bad, as are photos of people with American plan. If, on the other hand, you go to make a narrow portrait, a wildlife photo (for example a dog with a lot of hair) or a "deep" landscape you will notice its limits more. Even a 24-240mm Sony, often criticized, has a better sharpness and color rendering for the same mm. For the record, in my opinion the best yield is between f/8 and f/11, although I have not seen an abysmal difference with the most open apertures (if you can close, however, better). The autofocus system is valid, not excellent but certainly better than other cheap Sony lenses that I have tried. In addition, it is silent. The stabilizer, on the other hand, I found very ineffective. Personal tip: if you have an old camera or with a few MPx try it, it may be fine on certain occasions. Or if you buy a Sony camera for the first time and the KIT version does not cost you a mistake, it can be good to fiddle (if I am not mistaken the non-Sony lenses can not take advantage of the phase detection autofocus). Otherwise, especially if you have a modern camera with a lot of MPx, think of something "up to par".

sony_a7ivSony A7 IV

Pros: Ergonomics, malleable lossless RAW files, definition, infinite dynamic-range (even at high ISO), incredible autofocus even in low light, complexion, EVF compared to 7 III, power on and operating speed, very good extra-fine JPG, video oversampling 4:2:2 10 bits incisive and with little noise, S-Log/Cinetone, quieter shooting than previous series, adjustable display, MAF touch, renewed menu, possibility to keep the shutter closed when the machine is off

Cons: Rolling Shutter very evident, ISO seal not surprising in the photos, IBIS generally not very efficient (especially on the fifth axis on the video side), burst lower than the competition, average autonomy, crop in 4K / 50p

Opinion: A hybrid all-rounder of great quality, at a price certainly high but all in all in line with the current market situation. The standout feature of this camera is certainly the lightning fast and precise autofocus, able to track the eye even in critical conditions (tried a very critical street night with dark lens - f / 6.3 - and still managed to hook). However, as you close the aperture the autofocus loses a little bit in reactivity, nothing dramatic anyway. For events I consider it the ideal purchase, a little less for wildlife and sports given the limited flurry. The lossless RAW is fantastic, extremely malleable, maybe just a little "hard". The dynamic-range is very high, in PP you can recover completely white areas that you would never think contained information. The processor is excellent both in keeping the machine responsive and in processing a very remarkable JPG (lacking, however, in the information on the highlights). The advice is always to work the RAW, but the automatic noise reduction (as well as the general processing of the photos) is a spanna above that of the previous series (if I have to find a defect, during the day there is too much contrast). The ISO seal is discreet / good considering the density, but it is not higher than that of the A7 III (perhaps worse), while on the chromatic front I finally found a Sony with good complexions and not too much tending to yellow. On the video side, however, there is a lot of stuff in terms of general quality, including oversampling and the possibility of 4:2:2 10 bits with S-Log and Cinetone, however the rolling shutter in some situations is very evident (and this I consider a heavier "con" of 4K/50p crop). In addition, the IBIS is not very effective despite having used it in combos with Sony OSS lenses (especially I noticed a deficit on the fifth axis). The ISO seal here is definitely good, you can shoot even at 1000 ISO with very little noise. Other aspects such as autonomy, the quality of the display and the viewfinder (the latter two however improved compared to A7 III) I consider them average, not scarce but not surprising.

sony_24-240ossSony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS

Pros: All-rounder focal excursion; solidity; very good optical stabilizer; dimensions and weight for its type; Decent quality up to 100mm, discreet up to 150mm; chromatic aberration acceptable for the type of lens.

Cons: Capricious AF: sometimes it is quick and accurate, other times it is very weak (generally good with a lot of light and bad with little, it has difficulty when focusing on a single point); quality that decreases progressively and significantly as the focal length increases; yield "kneaded" at high ISO compared to other objectives; very low flare resistance; dark; minimum focusing distance.

Opinion: An all-rounder lens that I find suitable especially for daytime / evening landscaping. At night, unfortunately, I found a very low flare resistance in the presence of direct light sources and a quality generally more "kneaded" at high ISO than other lenses. The chromatic aberration I found more than acceptable, as well as the sharpness especially up to 100mm; at 150mm the loss is already evident, even more so at 240mm. The color rendering is average, I do not feel like mentioning it either among the PROs or cons. The autofocus is a bit the unknown, generally it is fine during the day or on a wide field but has serious difficulties in the dark on moving subjects or if we set a single focus point. The minimum focusing distance is also a downside, while not being dramatic. The stabilizer is really very effective, even more so when combined with a body that is also stabilized. Unfortunately it is very dark and closes quite quickly, however you can not expect more at this price and especially with this bulk / weight ratio.

sony_a7iiSony A7 II

Pros: FullFrame at an affordable price (about 1000€ currently); valid and sharp sensor with more than enough ISO seal (not excellent, but it is a 2014 machine) and good dynamic-range (always in relation to age); RAW rather malleable and with good chances of recovery on lights and shadows; stabilized sensor; compact and lightweight machine body; does not overheat; still compatible with Sony APPs; presence of some customizable buttons.

Cons: AF-S often inaccurate, especially when the light goes down; AF-C discreet in bright light but very poor indoors/dark; slow processor; ignition speed; gust; weak autonomy; EVF and display (not touch) just enough; JPG quality; the color rendering on the complexions does not satisfy me; FullHD 1080p video only; software and menus; slow USB output; single slot.

Opinion: Camera that can still give many satisfactions especially in the landscape (even at night, especially if you use the tripod) or still-life, or where you do not need a first-level autofocus. Where, on the other hand, the autofocus affects, for example on moving subjects (especially if indoors), the camera shows the side and many shots come out of focus. I found the JPG weak, however already the compressed RAW proves to be malleable and with good chances of recovery on lights and shadows (for this reason I find it particularly suitable for landscaping). The color response is generally good, as well as the AWB: only the complexions do not fully satisfy me (but you can correct it with a little post). The stabilizer works very well, especially when coupled with a lens that is also stabilized. Unfortunately, we are still talking about a mirrorless camera from 2014, when this technology was still unripe. The autonomy is weak, the processor is slow (not very slow) as well as the speed of ignition. EVF and display are very weak (especially the EVF), the menu is the old one of Sony and the videos are only FullHD (quality, but between resolution and autofocus I would not recommend it to a videomaker). It should be noted, however, that it is the latest mirrorless of the A7 range to be compatible with Sony's APPs.
