![]() | Nikon Df Pros: Sensor with superlative dynamic range, high iso rendering, aesthetics, lightness, incredibly clean and three-dimensional files, image colors, feeling of having something truly unique Cons: Few pixels (compared to today's standards), wearable tires, uncertain autofocus with low light, SLR now out of production. Opinion: I joined Juza Photo more than anything else because I felt the duty to pay homage to my favorite SLR. In fact, as the owner of both the Df and the Nikon D850 I can say that the files of the first are able to withstand the comparison (and in some situations even beat) the superpixxellata sister. Obviously, it is my personal opinion and I have absolutely no pretense of dictating absolute truths. However, every time I compare the files of the two machines I always have the feeling that the photos of the Df have a level of realism and beauty slightly higher than the monstrous D850. It may be that a few but large pixels collect light better, but the three-dimensionality of the Df images has something stunning. The car is light, excellent for portraits, it is also a pleasure to take it to the city to make the street (its privileged field of action, in my opinion), but it is also great for hiking in the mountains, to make landscaping. The relatively low number of pixels is always misleading: in fact, the details it manages to churn out, especially with certain lenses (Nikkor 35 1.8 G, tamron 35 1.8 SP G2 and Nikkor 50 1.8 G) leave you speechless. The colors are always faithful and exciting, but I repeat the three-dimensionality is really its strong point. Even in the shots of a landscape, made by closing the aperture at f8-f11, you can clearly perceive the detachment of the planes, which is usually noticed / enhanced only with wider openings. But there are also flaws: the autofocus does not shine in low light, and this is really a shame given the sensor, made specifically to give its best in these situations. But above all, given the price of the car, it is unforgivable that the tires wear out soon, sometimes even expanding. The Df, however, is so beautiful and performing that it is gladly accepted to have to send it to the assistance service every now and then, to give it a 'refresh'. That sensor inherited from the D4 has something magical. It's true, you can't do extreme crops because of the 16 mpx but what these few pixels give you.. However, the fact that it costs a lot and does not guarantee the video-function has attracted a lot of criticism. But after all, it was not born for a modern and frenetic use. You take 'reasoned' photos of them and it is essential to associate certain lenses, preferably fixed lenses. Among the various lenses with which I tried it I can say that the most beautiful colors I saw them with the Sigma 50 1.4 Art, the Tamron 35 1.8 SP and the Zeiss Planar 50 1.4. Among the zooms, however, I saw shine especially the Tamron 70-200 2.8 G1. Its ideal completion, however, remains the fabulous Nikkor 58 1.4 G: there you have in your hands the top for portraiture. A note of merit for the humble and mistreated 50ino 1.8 G that is associated with it in kit. Lightweight, fast in af, with pleasant and balanced colors and with a respectable sharpness from f2.8 upwards. What can I say.. extraordinary machine, unique, and probably unrepeatable. Dispassionate advice: be wary of the various negative reviews or comparative on sensors, the realism of an image or colors that know how to excite are things not quantifiable by graphs or mere technical specifications. The Df must be tried in person to realize how well it is performing in these respects. This controversial machine is also capable of churning out amazing photos both with old lenses and with the latest generation of glass, and not only at high iso (as its sensor would let you imagine) but also at the basic ones, for uses (landscape, architecture, still life) that would seem to be the prerogative more than anything else of high-resolution machines. In my opinion, the DF will continue to be monstrous even in 2022. Those who still find some new ones to buy, or used but in good condition, consider themselves kissed on the forehead by Fortune. Good light to all. sent on December 12, 2021 |
