![]() | Sony RX1 Pros: Fantastic optics, robust construction, diaphragm ring, compact size Cons: Decent autofocus but not great Opinion: I bought this used camera while I was looking for a quality compact camera that would allow me to rediscover the pleasure of analogue photography to capture everyday moments without excessive clutter and constraints. I have tried many cameras around the same budget (sub 1000€) such as Sigma DP2, Ricoh GR II and III, Fuji X-E2/3, Sony A7 III, Sony RX100 II, but the pleasure I find in the use and performance of this RX1 I cannot find in any other: I find the experience very "analog", and once you accept the limits of a solid but not ultra-advanced technology, You end up with a tool that allows you to enjoy the moment while capturing those special moments without getting in the way. I also had an RX1 mark II in parallel, but in the end I chose to keep the original RX1 as it was less demanding (for the value of the object and for the size of the files) and not too far off in terms of quality. For me it is the definitive choice at the moment, flanked by Ricoh GR III (when I want to limit the dimensions even more). It would be perfect if it had the vari-angle display (like the mark II) and maybe touch focus, which I learned to appreciate with the GR III, but that's okay too. The battery life (a common complaint, and true) is not a limit for me as you just need to bring some supplies, and it is still acceptable for those like me who are looking for a more relaxed and selective and less invasive type of photography. sent on July 21, 2025 |
![]() | Sony RX100 II Pros: Very pocketable, optimal focal range, lens with nice contrast, cheap on the used to date, burst at 10fps, well made Cons: Few physical controls, auto iso not available in M, 1" sensor limits, ergonomics Opinion: This beautiful compact has almost everything to be the perfect companion for a backpack or everyday pocket, but unfortunately it has limits that can be, depending on the style of photography, more or less binding. The size is perfect even for small pockets, it is very well made and the focal range 28-100 is perfect as a walking all-rounder (which is why this type of camera is definitely spot on) and the zeiss lens returns images with a nice contrast and with a three-dimensional rendering. Surprising for a machine of that period the burst at 10fps (even if the buffer stops at 10 shots). It would seem perfect, but it has limits that impact on the final judgment: first of all, inexplicably it is not possible to set the auto ISO with the M mode, so you are always forced to choose whether to control either the depth of field or the motion blur control, not both. The few physical buttons often require you to resort to menus (the Fn key makes up for it marginally) and the ring on the lens is often redundant since you can't control aperture and shutter speed except in full M, where the ISO must also be set so a third physical check would be needed... that isn't there. All this makes the use cumbersome and slow. The files aren't bad, but the quality certainly doesn't compare to larger sensors. In comparison, the Ricoh GR series is much faster, you can do everything with one hand and the image quality in my opinion is superior for the same pocketability. The zoom is the big added value of the little sony compared to the Ricoh, and also the price of the used. In general, it's a car with a lot of potential, but you have to be able to accept some compromises. sent on May 11, 2024 |
![]() | Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 Pros: Size, weight, price, sharpness. Cons: Anything that wouldn't allow you to get the pros mentioned above. Opinion: If only it were brighter... if it were made of metal instead of plastic... if it had a longer focal range... It would be 3 times bigger and heavier and cost 5 times as much! When you buy it, you know what you're getting. Unfortunately you still can't have a lens that does everything. At least this one doesn't give up the quality of the image, it doesn't take anything used and it's very portable. Everything in life is a matter of priorities. sent on March 31, 2024 |
![]() | Fujifilm XF 27mm f/2.8 Pros: Compactness, lightness, solidity, focal length, price Cons: Lack of personality, focus, lack of diaphragm ring, uncomfortable cap Opinion: I had read excellent opinions and seen remarkable photos in the gallery, but in my case love was never taken because of a general flatness of the images I could get: tried on X-E2 and X-E3, it was my first fuji lens, but honestly as soon as I got my hands on the 18-55 I found the images I took much more interesting (and not because of the focal length, as I still shoot at very similar focal lengths in general). Also I have always had doubts about the effectiveness of focusing (perhaps due to lack of stabilization). In the end the results were rather disappointing. Resold without regrets. sent on October 09, 2022 |
