panasonic_s1Panasonic S1

Pros: Ergonomics, body that gives a feeling of great solidity, weight (for me is not a disadvantage), spectacular dynamic range (in my opinion colors very close to Leica), ultra operating speed, in most cases churns out ready-to-use jpeg, Raw excellently workable. Fantastic silent snap.

Cons: Autofocus absolutely to be reviewed, unworthy for such a machine body.

Opinion: I wanted to try the S1 for quite some time for a purchase in place of the excellent Sony A7III (having big hands I prefer large bodies with excellent grip). Tried for a week in all the shooting situations i usually try, thanks to the local retailer who had a demo along with the 24/105 F4 kit lens. Well, fantastic machine body, excellent ergonomics, immediate familiarity in the controls. Great if you use in the studio, still life, portraits, panoramas. One excessive insurmountable flaw: autofocus. Problems in low light or artificial/dark light areas. Very uncertain tracking in all the modes of autofocus provided (even single center point), tried the theaters for a classical ballet tended to focus on the bottom in 70% of cases (unexplained) although several meters deep from the foreground. Tested together with the Nikon D750 that I carried with me for safety, the Nikon autofocus with the same settings did not miss a beat. In conclusion, gorgeous machine, if Panasonic in the future will update the autofocus with a better performing one, I will definitely buy it.
