nikon_z9Nikon Z9

Pros: Pretty much almost everything.

Cons: Battery with limited life compared to reflex flagships, key layout not always optimal coming from a reflex flagship (mainly due to the tilting display that did not allow you to keep the controls on the left).

Opinion: An excellent camera body that I have been using for about a month, after having made the switch to a mirrorless especially to get better sports shots, but which today I have found perfect for any type of photo. With FTZ II adapter and F lenses I've noticed that it struggles a bit to focus in low light, but I'm still trying the autofocus options and so it's probably also a problem with my settings. I'm not particularly fond of the electronic viewfinder, but it's still an advantage to preview the shot with the settings you're using. A rubbery and ergonomic camera body, slightly less bulky and heavy than the D4, I noticed that the shots are very sharp, even compared to a D4 that, despite its age, continues to give me great satisfaction thanks to a sensor with a fantastic and practically legendary "paste". For those who make videos, it has practically everything as standard and even the 8K in RAW format and N-LOG profile is still easily manageable in Davinci Resolve with a computer even not of the latest generation but with a decent video card and a lot of RAM. In addition to Nikon's RAW, it is worth mentioning the possibility of shooting in ProRes 12 bit 4:2:2, formats that other brands make you shell out a lot of money to be able to use them. Obviously, they are not formats to be used for the village festival, but they are formats that if you shoot films you will appreciate and lick your fingers. It is not a beginner's machine, but it is still a good investment for a professional and also for an experienced amateur, because it still has all the right technology inside that will always give the maximum result without compromise, at a price that is still lower than other competing brands. As soon as I have used it well for intensive use, I will let you know if I have identified further strengths and/or weaknesses.

Pros: Current despite age, if your intent is to take pictures.

Cons: Probably the 16 Mpx, but to work they are fine if we count that the D5 has just 4 more.

Opinion: I bought this car just a few days ago, in 2020. Because? I needed a second body machine to accompany my D750 which lately I use almost exclusively for sports photographs and reportage. I've been thinking about it for a long time: a second D750, a D500... However a new D750 would have been feasible, given the current prices, while the D500, also used, keeps a high price. In the end I set out to look for used flagships and came to the conclusion that if I found a D4 in good condition it could be the perfect compromise: more megapixels than the D3s, a more affordable price than the D4s (which anyway, Despite the always high price, around 3200-3500 euros, it is found with the shutter now near the end). So, thanks to a user of this site, I found a specimen held in a manic way, perfect in aesthetics and with so few shots that I can consider it new. I immediately got to work, very similar to the D750 in terms of menus, within a couple of hours I was already comfortable with the controls. A shutter that looks like a shotgun shot, a spectacular sensor: despite its age, it has little to envy to that of the D750. With the same conditions I have photos practically similar, indeed, to the high ISO, in my opinion, holds even a little better. And the thing that struck me the most is the cleaning of the files that churns out: they are perfect, with the advantage that they weigh less and therefore, to work, they are also more practical. The only "sin", if you will, the XQD card, but not so much for the card itself, but rather for the prices they have: the card is still very fast, nothing to say. If your intent is to take photographs, this machine, even today, is really the top, both for the sensor and for how it is built (a real tank). If you want a modern machine that allows you to take both photos and videos, go further (and in any case I would never take a flagship for that type of use, in fact, there are much less expensive solutions or, at the same price, there are dedicated tools that have many advantages over a video camera). With the life of the shutter that this machine has, I'm sure it will give me so much satisfaction for a very long time. If you find an opportunity like I did, you won't regret it.
